- DANGEROUS BACKDOOR BARRELS AND HEAVY KEIKI SHOREBREAK. Surfing opening swells on the North Shore of Oahu is always interesting. Backwash can create wonky waves while sand leaving the reef can create epic sandbars. Jamie O'Brien said Rockpiles was the best it's been in at least 5 years. Meanwhile, the crowd seems to be heavier than ever making Pipeline and Backdoor even more dangerous.
This particular evening a backdoor (12/6/2022) was dangerous due to the backwash, shallow reef, and heavy crowd. Nathan Florence returned home after an epic slab tour across the world and local Lucas Godfrey scored the wave of the day. The Vans Pipe Masters waiting period starts tomorrow with the first call being at 8 AM HST.
The second half of the edit which starts at 4:50 is from Keiki shorebreak, one of the heaviest shorebreak waves in the world! Enjoy all the barrels, wipeout, and b-roll from another epic day in Hawaii!

no kidding about the crowd. I was watching the pipeline cam during an evening session a couple nights ago and there had to be like 100 dudes out. Absolutely nuts, there's no way that is enjoyable
On the bright side, we don’t have to watch any women. As usual, they disappear in waves of any consequence.
Would rather surf a 3 foot fat slow wave all by myself and be able to enjoy myself and work on my surfing than sit in that shit show of a crowd for a 2% chance at one wave in 5 hours anyday. This shit is unreal now a days…
Yeah only 12 to 15 guys getting all the waves to so lame I’m so over Hawaii I’d rather go ride a 4 foot Hollow wave to myself alone in freezing water in Norway

Crowds are ridiculous but the youngsters don’t know the difference so it’s not mentioned much. Question is where will it be in 5 to 10 more years? Unsurfable? It’s already where only the “ pros” are getting most of the waves or the rich kids who can be out there all day everyday. Yup that’s what it’s come to. I guess if you don’t know the difference it doesn’t bother you and if you do you’re glad you got to surf before it was like this.
