It’s a brutal sport, it’s expensive (lots of gear, breakages), and it takes time, patience, perseverance… but there is no better sensation than planing on water propelled by the wind.
You are absolutley right... the pure sound of the wind with the footage ... let me dream of my last windsurfing session... Windsurfing for live... nowhere else I feel more alive
Absolutely. Most videos only ever show how easy everything seems and how everything works out well. That you have to be out of a dicey situation in a very short time is not shown. Show more videos of real surfing, not just the sunny side of super tricks.
Ditto. - Loved that standing start after the recover swim to escape the incoming waves and rocky shore. - just that little moment was amazing display of mastery. Impressive.
No permanent slow motion, no loud music, no only successful moves,... it makes you feel really on your board or in the water ! Congratulations and thank you
In hawaii, me and my friends all foil now,the fun and feeling of gliding and carving as opposed to chattering on the water trying to hold a rail makes winging the most fun. You can see that on days like this video, windsurfing and kiting are great (for last 35 years) At our local wave spot it's not untill the wind hits 25 and the swell gets a face height of at least 6 to 8 feet that windsurfing is not anti climactic. These guys are ripping it up in great conditions but we all can't be them.
Much better than anything done recently on windsurfing: it shows every stage of the practice: spot placement, jumping, surfing, recovering from loss of gears, quick restart after small failure, speed taking. As close as reality as one can get: Truly amazing work!
I started windsurfing in 1981. I started to race one design by mid 80’s competitive slalom by early 90’s and eventually competitive wave. For a good 20 yrs windsurfing was with out a doubt the RADIST small craft wind sport there was. It’s not underrated, there are just far more super fun small craft wind driven toys to play with now than there were in the 80 & 90s. I’ll never stop windsurfing, but I sure do like to do all the wind sports that are a direct link to what windsurfing started. But, I’ll never forget how it all started for me. WINDSURFING!
Agreed 100%. It is not underrated, but becoming outdated quite fast. There is constantly growing kite community and foil is taking huge leaps to glory. Arguably, wing foil is smaller, more agile, more fun way to ride, and to me is a direct ancestor of windsurfing 🙄 World and toys are changing 😎
Windsurfing is super difficult sport compared to kitesurfing. I love it started it when there was 50:50 ratio of wind to kite surfers. Doing jumps like these on video is world class level and even those pros have difficulty of landing these tricks. Compared to kitesurfing where doing some basic jumps and tricks is relatively easy and more advanced amateurs can land these tricks pretty reliably
@@hubert_an , I hear what you are saying. I have massive respect for the windsurfers and I enjoy sharing spots with them, it all adds up to a nice surfing & sport vibe. What I was trying to say is that there are types of equipment that can allow people to get to certain “adrenaline injection” easier. If you want to jump higher - you would prefer trampoline over brick shoes ;) Thus, my point was about wing+foil, which look similar, packs smaller, entry into discipline is arguably lower, and fellas on the water, doing what they enjoy with less efforts, so people pick those over windsurf more often. 🤷♂️ Same with the e-bike: if you enjoy long trails, but physically would not be able to do it on a conventional MTB, this is an opener to experience you otherwise would have skipped
I started sailing in 1983 and it became my life. My first board was an O’Brien Sensation (a 70 lbs beast similar to a one design). I was only 13 years old and a girl. I lived in Washington DC and was the only female sailor for years. And I was hardcore. I would sail on the Potomac at a park right next to the Pentagon nearly 365 days a year. By parents knew I was weird so they relented (for safety sake) and bought me a dry suit. I have to admit that I preferred the freezing 8mm wetsuits to the dry suit because it was so claustrophobic and took a good 45 minutes to put on and longer to take off. Plus those little trickles of freezing water that would leak in at the neck during wipeouts felt like being tased. But I would sail when the Potomac was frozen over except for the small area near the boat launch where boat traffic broke up the ice. Shout out to Windsurfing Unlimited in those days. Again, I was a weird girl. I went to a very proper private girl’s school where I had to toe the line. But outside of school I was obsessed with windsurfing and DC punk rock. When I wasn’t sailing I was playing guitar and/or drums in various DC punk bands. Those were the days. My parents begged me to go to law school. So I went to Georgetown and continued sailing. And during summer break I would pretend that I had a passion for property law and would go intern for the Pacific Legal Foundation on Oahu. And I was a fixture at Kailua as I never showed up for work. But, admittedly, summer sailing on Oahu is lame. So when I finally graduated from law school I worked for a law firm for a year and then became a board shaper and moved to Guarda and then Iseo. I loved the advent of freestyle because it reminded me of skateboarding. So I was building extra wide but stubby round nose boards that could plane quickly and h just enough volume to enable sailors to land tricks on the nose while maintaining a degree of speed. F2 eventually made a board like mine called the Air. Josh Stone promoted it. The only problem was that it worked great on the Italian Glacier lakes but sucked in real ocean chop. So I moved to Maui and got into building gunny big wave boards. I love big waves but not stuff like Jaws. My favorite spot is Lanes on a Kona wind. With Ho’okipa size waves but with the smooth rampiness of Sprecks you could launch a slalom board into the stratosphere over and over again on every run. I miss those days 😔. At 53 yo I only have memories. I live in South Carolina now and we may get 18 knots in the afternoon if we are really lucky. I was a sail snob when I was younger. I wouldn’t rig up unless I was at least on a 4.8. Now I ride either a 6.5 or 5.8. I haven’t had the opportunity to rig anything smaller in years. Oh, but I do have memories. I have nearly every board, boom, mast, etc . . . that I’ve ever owned. I built my own private museum on my property. I have the first teak sailing booms and teak mast foot universal. It’s my private Louvre.
Finally a video not showing only the perfect moments of windsurfing. Bravo. Only someone who tried to fight whitewater and waves can image how demanding this sport is. If you don’t have the skills, take a kite 😊
I burnt 500 calories just watching that dude rescue his kit and avoid getting bashed up on the rocks. Just blasting on flat water in the footstraps and harness is exillarating enough for me!
Totally underrated because it's inaccessible to the talentless passionless trying to look epic with a minimum of effort and dedication! That's why windsurfing particularly wave-sailing is so special! Big respect to these awesome riders!!👍👍 Thanks for sharing!! 🙏🙏🤙🤙🤙
I couldn't really understand how big the waves are at Pozo especially on the South rocks, I thought they were just the right angle for the big jumps. Really epic footage. Thank you!! 🤙
Amazing footage, placement, height, hovering… 🤙🏼👌🏼 Windsurfing is understated because it is super difficult to film and broadcast properly, it is also difficult to learn. I am windsurfing since 30years, but not with in this strength of wind and even less with such sea conditions. These guys are champions.
I remember my uncle foing it in the late 80s it was really popular but when the in shore sports got espn coverage it sort of died. I think drones will make it overly popular now. It's good for the sport but not the sea rescue guys.
Great video, POZO izquierdo.I belonged to the pioneers in POZO in 1985.A ghost village then, especially in Winter and only a few people knew how to get there.A 16 years old Björn Dunkerbeck and the F2 station of his parents in Aguila Playa.I never left the Canaries, now going towards 67 and I am in Tenerife now. What times we had.4 years in a camper van.😎
You know, I think it’s stunningly beautiful, what you guys do. An agile, aesthetic and truly artful dance with the waves and the wind. And the drone shots bring this to us in the best framing we could hope for. Thanks so much for taking us along for the ride!
I am completely on the opposite end of the spectrum: 60+ years old, just stepping on when it's between 8 and 12 MPH wind, sailing along ON the surface, trying (and mostly succeeding) to NOT fall in, going from place to place and nearby islands at a moderate, pleasant place, and having a GREAT time with the elements and enjoying the sights. No accidents or hospitalizations in over 15 years. AND I AGREE: Windsurfing IS a BEAUTIFUL SPORT. I'm loving it for 25 years now.
So great to see side on conditions and just hear the wind and waves. As an ocean windsurfer I crave footage of water starting, getting out in onshore conditions and recovering from crashes. I would love to see more footage of the realistic aspects of water starting in breaking surf etc to help me learn from the best.
Looks like Pozo, Gran Canaria. I windsurfed there back in 1996, great spot. I'm not as fit today unfortunately, so I wouldn't go out there today unless I practiced hard in not as challenging conditions...
So very underrated. Most people don't understand how freaking hard windsurfing is. But they also havent ever been able to see it from this awesome perspective. Great work man. I'm inspired.
¡Gracias for your work! Really enjoyed watching. Amazing pics so close and high definition. I really appreciate the fact you didn’t add music, it so refreshing!
Awesome footage, thank you. Same with the slalom competition. The drone footage are just above anything I ever seen. Windsurfers has alway talked about how underrated our sport is but I truly believe that individual like you who can produce content like this will change the game.
These are big words, thank you! It actually is my intention to have an impact on "delivering" this sport to broader masses in a way that catches their interest. "Putting the viewer into the action" is one of the hardest parts about it but that's pretty much what I am trying to do :)
I really enjoyed watching the guy swimming all the way back to his board. It's easy to only show the action. I appreciate watching him swim, shows how hard this sport really is. great video and ty
1:44 Going for a swim. That is unbelievable! That dude is one of the fittest people on earth to be riding like that, crash, swim with great form in the ocean, find his board, remount and ride away so quickly. Big respect to him!
To be that good at Windsurfing takes many years, great fitness and the right conditions. And nobody outside understands that e.g. a Kiter, Winger and Foiler in general had an easier path to look great on water. Most people want to just show off and need therefore easy wins, not something which is hard but nobody appreciates.
Agree! I learned windsurfing in the Delta, Gorge, and Berkley Marina.... It is super hard to get this good. There are many amazing athletes, but this really takes the most talent IMHO. Tremendous amount of endurance, agility and strength beyond many other sports.

Man! I SOOOOOOO miss doing that! Still got my short boards but no other gear 😞 And now, I live way too far from the water. Bring on climate change so the water levels rise and I can get back into it! Absolutely one of the 2 best sports on the planet, along with riding dirt bikes!
What amazing windsurfing, absolutely wonderful to watch , incredible jumps . I am happy if I can just stay upright and not fall off , but to do incredible jumps like that not only look incredible but must feel so awesome like flying . 🌊🐬
Extreme water sports in general have been underrated and misunderstood. They require not only super high athletic skills, incredible focus and concentration but also a hyper accurate sense and capacity to feel and anticipate the natural environment around the athlete. There are no identical two waves, and mastering perfectly the combinations of the angle and the speed at which you hit a wave makes the difference between and near-drowning wipe out and a fantastic and spectacular figure/jump. Wind is not always steady, it can be gusty, that also adds a major parameter on the environmental “dashboard”.
Swimming 100 m in windy waves followed by immediately getting hit by whitewash and then having to water start in that... Windsurfing is awesome.
Imagine if you weren't one of the best windsurfers in the world! Damn!
And if not, bye bye board, mast and sail...
@@FabriceBLR yah, I think so....
(I once resembled that scene - first time on the ocean(Cabarete) - Rented boom got bent)
Swimming for your gear and watching it slowly keep being pushed inshore with each passing set is demoralising.
I felt concern for him when he had to swim all that way to get his windsurf back......Brave!
It’s a brutal sport, it’s expensive (lots of gear, breakages), and it takes time, patience, perseverance… but there is no better sensation than planing on water propelled by the wind.
It’s the absence of music for me. The sound of the wind, waves, and windsurfer is music in and of itself. Keep doing what you do sir
Yes, That! No music, raw wind and waves is spectacular.
The sound is artificially added in post, otherwise you would just hear the drone buzzing
You are absolutley right... the pure sound of the wind with the footage ... let me dream of my last windsurfing session... Windsurfing for live... nowhere else I feel more alive
Brilliant footage. Really pleased you showed the full swim recovery. Dose of reality 😂🔥🔥

No fluffing in the car park for 10 minutes. 😂
I've tried every watersport under the sun, nothing compares to windsurfing on a good day 🙂
none of the people I know (and me to) remained a windsurfer after trying a kite...you either didn't try it or didn't progress to serious jumping
I agree in general, because conditions for windsurfing are very often bad, but when conditions are good, windsurfing is still a lot better@@Luckmus

Fantastic video! It also clearly shows how much windy it is in Pozo, since even Pro riders often loose their equipment during jumps
Epic action!! Thanks for sharing
