Watching James the last few years has completely changed my relationship with coffee. I was drinking gas station coffee and brewing with a Keurig at home 3 years ago. Cut to now, and I’m constantly watching videos on new V60 techniques, and on how to dial in my Barista Express to get the best espresso possible. He’s a godsend to the home barista. I live in southern Utah where good espresso is near impossible to come by. And last week I dialed in a fresh bag to near perfection (my taste) which was a near religious experience 😂. Huge thank you to James and all the UA-cam coffee enthusiasts
I have roasted pretty good coffee in an air fryer. The primary reason why the Phillips doesn't do well is because it doesn't get hot enough to hit a high enough temp above first crack. I recommend using a ninja air fryer where you can use the max crisp mode that goes to 240 degrees. I also recommend putting a mesh colander into the air fryer to hold the coffee and pull out the basket every 15 to 30s to shake the beans briefly before putting it back. An infrared temp gun also helps to monitor the temperature. My roasted tend to be done in 4:30min.
or go with an air roaster that is designed for roasting coffee. The Freshroast 540 is a good one. It lets you control the heat and the fan speed, and also displays the temperature. I used a hot air popcorn popper for a few years but being able to see the temperature and being able to control fan speed and heating element is a huge step up.
"You could do this in a more sensible way. But why would you?" - Thank you so much James, that is one of the funniest things I've heard all year. Merry Christmas.
I have roasted coffee in my air-frier for years. It has a rotating drum you can use to roast beans. My problem was that bigger batches (~250 grams) were uneven until I realised that if I introduced big metal bolts into the drum, they spread the heat evenly, so that way I could do them quite well. I did it for years until I could no longer find a cheap enough source of green beans and I found (at least somewhat) freshly roasted beans for a reasonable price locally.
What do you mean by the big metal bolts? Did you just toss them in or did you install them? Do you think they absorb some of the heat and provide a buffer for the roast?
@@ZacharyPittman I did just toss them in there and yes, I think it first takes longer to heat up, but once it does, it takes a while for them to cool down, so that help in retaining heat. Metal is also a great conductor. So these are the two reasons I chose big bolts. What did surprise me initially was that it didn't crush the beans. Maybe because they enveloped them well enough to not allow for a lot of movement, not sure.
And if you come to think about it, when James says "it's not bad" it's the equivalent of us, normal human beings, going "it's coffee alright" before sending it down the throat 😂

I had some of those coffees in blind cuppings and they were incredibly good. Same for Pop Corn machines. But as you say, they are using fryers with a turning drum. Often they even connect thermocouples or modify the fryers in a way that allows them to connect the devices to artisan and develop proper roasting profiles. There are quite a lot of informations in coffee boards,...
I used to roast my coffee in a rotating basket that came with my air roaster. Took around 12 minutes on the highest temp. I would say it was about a medium roast. Then I'd pour it into a bowl shaped sieve and take it outside to cool seperate the chaff. Finally I'd spread it out onto a room temp baking sheet.
Really love this guy he does things I don't expect. Always interesting and his voice is very smooth I've had his vids run while trying to sleep. Awesome
Funnily enough, I have an "air fryer" which is basically just a baby convection oven that pushes a lot of air, and it has a spit roast attachment with a perforated, rotating drum. It didn't take me long before I modified it to roast coffee and... It does pretty good! Heat is there, agitation is there and it roasts pretty evenly. I was in the same kind of spirits as James here when I started out and was simply shocked that it worked pretty decently and a few times in a row... But I would never put beef tallow in there XD
I have an airfryer that isn't a basket airfryer. It is basically a small convection oven (which is really all an airfryer is anyway!) My airfryer has a rotary basket (meant for things like fries or veggies that you want to agitate while roasting). You should try this again with one of those. We got ours at Costco in Vermont (even though we live in Montreal, Canada). But it may work!
I would like to think that this would be a good option. If you have a rotary basket and the basket, or fryer, is tilted so the beans could agitate while frying, that would surely be a better option than a static fryer. It should allow the beans to roast more evenly. James can comment on this. I have some green Limu beans from Ethiopia that I wanted to roast but never got round to. I might try some in the airfryer and shake the whole thing around a bit to get a more even roast. Otherwise I'll make a fire and use an old coffee tin with holes poked in it.

I mean, we've gone beyond absurd to the sublime, so, "DO YOU NOT CARE ABOUT FLAVOR?!?"
Strap the air frier to one of those vibration plates some workout people use. Sure it might vibrate the frier to death, but I think we've accepted that going in...
OMG THANK YOU FOR THE SECOND AUDIO TRACK! That is a phenomenal and thoughtful addition for those of use who respond poorly to mouth sounds and the like.
hey James, love your videos. I noticed that there is a distinct ~267Hz hum throughout this video, including the shots without the air fryer. I think it might be one of the lamp fans coming through a mic. I'm only mentioning it because you and your team always pay so much attention to a professional production and so this stuck out. keep being awesome
I roast my beans in a toaster oven that has a air fry setting. I then purchased a roasting drum from Amazon and roast all the time with that unit. The beans turn out close to perfect. When there done I have 2 sives and a just shuffle the beans back and forth until the chaff has blown away. Then spread them out on a cookie sheet to cool the rest of the way. No fan necessary. Works awesome.
Civilization has fallen, and James wants his coffee! How does he do it? He finds an old cast iron frying pan to roast his beans over an open fire in beef tallow, then grinds the beans to powder between 2 rocks. Lastly, with the powder in a pouch made of old t-shirt, he dips the powdered beans in a pot of water just off the boil, for a coffee infused drink.
I remember an old Air Fryer model with a donut-shaped basket. The basket would spin, and there was some kind of spatula attached to the main body that continually mixed the food inside. After a quick search, I believe it was from the brand Tefal, and it seems like they’re still in business. It would be fun to experiment with roasting coffee in one of those
When I lived in China I sometimes cooled my home roasted beans using powdered dry ice. I was surprised how much it affected the flavor in a positive way, cooling the beans down so fast. A video about cooling methods and the affect on flavor would be very interesting (to me).
That fan noise robbed us of a great Schwarzenegger impression soundbite for future Hames videos, but as I continue to watch, I'm starting to suspect that this is already a Hames video in disguise. Expecting him to wish me a beefy day at the end.

Strap the air frier to one of those vibration plates some workout people use. Sure it might vibrate the frier to death, but I think we've accepted that going in...
Have been roasting coffee in popcorn machine for years now. Luv it.
The laughing was so wholesome and genuine
This is the best channel on the internet!
Finally, questions answered i never dared to ask.
I just rendered out my tallow yesterday and I make coffee professionally. Thank you James for the perfect video.
You should react to nileblue making coffee from scratch!
"Oh there it is" @ 12:50 had me crying laughing. Thank you James for taking some beef tallow for the team and happy holidays to you and yours.
Oh I hear it too, very subtle but easy to change next time
first time in my life i liked someone's Greasy Beans
I believe you’re now entitled to add the + to the end of your username.
@JohnnyArtPavlou 😄
It looks you had a great time making this video!
Happy Holidays James & the rest of you on this channel!
I appreciate it a lot that you have a separate slurp-free audio track. Your extra effort there is definitely making the video more enjoyable for me
I roast my beans in a toaster oven that has a air fry setting.
Seeing James laughing uncontrollably made this so worthwhile. I'll use tallow for my coffee roasting to maintain my Keto-friendly diet.
You should try with popcorn machine it introduces agitation all the time. I tried and the results were more even.
11:09 my guy changes he's mind in a split second 🤣
Good to see beef tallow do well, wondering about coconut oil.. we use beef tallow as a moisturizer
Thank you James!
Does it make you smell like beef?
@@beefan1596 Can get scented and unscented "Moo Organics"..
Coconut oil, like tallow, has few unsaturated fatty acids so may actually do equally well Or equally poor 😊
Wonder if Nile blue watched this 😅
Thank you so much for the dual audio tracks. That is awesome.
It would be fun to experiment with roasting coffee in one of those
Just tuning in. This can't end well! 😂
I refreshed an aged Coffee in air fryer and worked very well
i just saw NileRed and just thought how painful it would've been for you to react to his video , hahaha
You seriously made my day James. This video was hilarious and somewhat educational.
Never stop being you.
HAhahah just came here after watching the NileBlue coffee video
I got into home roasting using a hot air popcorn popper and upgraded to a small drum roaster several years ago. It's a fun hobby.
4:50 This one's for Hames
The most personality of any Hoffster video, and so enjoyable!
Just wanna say as someone with misophonia, you're a godsend for having the extra audio track without the slurp sounds. Please keep including that -- it's incredibly worth it for those of us who love your videos but have sound sensitivity. I wish it was a standard across channels which have food-related content.
Great use of the feature! Hopefully UA-cam supports unique usages of audio tracks a bit better in the future, maybe by allowing custom names for them.
I really appreciate it because I never would have thought of this :D
Guessing the oily beans might make a mess of the grinder, especially at espresso grind. Love it when James has fun. 😊
5:08 intrusive coffee thoughts kicked in....
5:11 "maybe its not a good idea"
This channel has a high level of professionalism, but still maintains the personal level that many people miss in old youtube. Similar to Bob Ross
The two audio tracks greatly appreciated. Normally have to fast forward those parts. It was nice to be able to watch the whole thing.
