- This video describes how to replace the transmission in a 2000 Ford Ranger, 3.0 Liter V6, 4 x 4. All of the work was done exclusively with hand tools. The procedure should cover many models.
Great tutorial. Probably my first auto repair video where the mechanic is not cursing or swearing when things don’t move smoothly specially during this kind of major repairs, thanks to pastor.
Thanks for your comment. Glad to lend a hand!
Thanks for the video. One thing I can add... I was able to swap the transmission without removing the y pipe by loosening the motor mounts and raising the front of the engine. It will tilt the y pipe down just enough to give you the extra inch or so you need to slide out the transmission. I went that route because those exhaust bolts are almost always siezed up.
I started removing mine last night. Like you said the exhaust bolts are rusted in place. I'm going to try your method tonight. Thanks for the tip.
Another thing, was it just the motor mounts you had to loosen or did you have to remove anything else to jack the motor up?
@@snakerancher Just loosen the motor mounts and then put a block of wood under the crank pulley and jack the front of the enginer up. This will tilt the rear of the engine/transmission down so you can work the transmission out. It's not super easy but I managed to make it work.
@@chrisdurbin9170 day 2 of removal, passenger bolts came out fine, can't get a socket on drivers side due to the exhaust manifd. Appreciate the help though.
Great Job, perfect example of what a motivated individual can do with some hand tools and time....
A most excellent tutorial sir. I'm a retired mechanic and I couldn't have done it better, your approach to this job was perfect for those who have never tackled such a project. A definite Five star video.
+Earl Miller Thanks for the compliment! Glad to hear it is a good video. God bless.
Thank you for this great video. Could you give me an estimate as to how long this project will take, both removal of the old tranny and installation of a new one? I greatly appreciate it, thank you.
You can also remove the flex plate (fly wheel) nuts from the torque converter where you remove the starter. Also, this motor is small enough that it's probably faster to just use a stubby screw driver to rotate the flex plate from where the starter was removed.
I really liked this video. Its very clear and articulate. No ego... Just you trying to help people pull off a seemingly insurmountable repair... WWJD... He would probably help me fix my Ford. Thank you
Thank you for a respectable and thorough instructional video. I just got finished watching another video on the same topic and he used the F word as his filler word. You don’t use filler words at all and you seem to be a highly educated man. I will be subscribing and look forward to checking out your other videos. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge you’ve acquired and your love for Christ.
Glad to lend a hand!
Just want to let you know I watched your head gasket rebuild video and used it as an exact guide for doing my own. I couldn't have done it and wouldn't have attempted it without that video. Now unfortunately I am faced with a transmission replacement right after a successful engine replacement and once again, you are here to help me out. I will let you know how everything goes but I want to thank you for the immense help your videos are and have been to me. Keep up the good work my friend!
David Changet you are more than welcome. Glad to be of help!
@@resurrectionauto670 would this procedure be the same for 2WD?
@@diro6232 Yes, almost identical.
Thank you so much! You answered my problem of a bump at acceleration and I wasn't even looking here for that! Good thurough video👍🏻
Well said right up front. Amen!
Thank you. I am thrilled to be a Christian and to share with others!

Great video.
For starting the nut on the torque converter to flex-plate (flywheel) look for a "magnetic nut-setter set" in metric from Harbor Freight for about $5.00. Also available at other places. Start the nut with these, then finish with a regular socket.
Thank you for the reminder of what is truly important. I will definitely check out your other videos
Thank you so much sir! This was a huge help to my long restoration of a 1993 Ranger!
Glad to lend a hand!
Not lying to long restoration I can’t find parts for mine. Struggling to find transmission cooler lines
Nice video and instructional. Kinda wish I had came across this one first before starting this project on mine. Live and learn.
Facing this task on a 2000 Explorer. Same transmission and almost identical steps. You give me hope for for the job and my relationship with our Savior.
Robert Widhalm Fantastic. Glad I could help.
How'd it go? Most likely I'll have to drop my Tranny to get the oil pan gasket off. It was leaking pretty bad. Same Ranger, just a 2wd.
Excellent video and very detailed! Great work! God bless
So glad it was helpful!
Jesus owned a Honda. He went on a trip and all of the disciples piled in his car at once. That is why the Bible says that the disciples were in one Accord.
-your an idiot
Thank you for reminding me that there is more to life than worrying about my truck which has me very depressed and my thoughts are wrapped around worrying if my newly bought truck is having issues and I'm neglecting more important things...I'm a Christian myself and I need to have more faith and what u said about there more to life than material things and worrying about my truck helped me break my negative train of thought and put it in christ's hands
.
Thank for the comment Edward! You're not the only one who sometimes need that reminder.
Good video!! Very informational, soon I will be tackling this same job on a Ranger project I just picked up..
Thanks for the video.
Backyard DIY You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
Great video!!! Always a pleasure watching you work and explaining stuff. Thank you very much!
I can do all things through Christ...and UA-cam. Expert video, but I'm most impressed with the proper procedural design and preparation....measure twice, cut once!
Thanks for your kind words. Best of luck with your repair!
Thanks for the video helped me out very much I just changed my transmission on the same truck the only thing I did different was I didn't have to take off the muffler pipes the transmission fit over top of them
That's excellent. Glad to lend a hand!
Well done! Very detailed! Its awesome you are a Christian! Im glad to see a Brother that works with his hands without cussing too much! haha! Gods Peace be with you!
h mc Thanks for the comment! I appreciate the kind words.
Appreciate that introduction
Thank you for your time to make this video. Was really helpful!
So glad it was helpful. I have about 6,000 on the transmission and thankfully its still working well. Best of luck.
Very nice video sir, thank you.
I love your dog brother
Very good video, a lot of patience 👍
Thank you very much! You did the great job, and it is for sure helpful for others.

Thank you very much for your GREAT video! I appreciate it 👍🏼
Glad to lend a hand! Best of luck with your repair.
Excellent video, presentation is great. Beaing a preatcher you must have a good automotive/Mechanical knowledge and explained just as good as a professional Auto Mechanic. Removing exhaust Y pipe could have been explained in more detail. I benifitted a lot from the video. Thanks a lot. Ziggy Haque
Thanks Ziggy for the comment. Best of luck with your repair!
Always start with draining the pan first so not get mess and put the couple of bolts back
Just a tip mate
Hey I know this was 8 years ago but where did you source your used transmission? I’m looking for a good place to find one that I know is good but doesn’t break the bank. Thanks!
I'm doing one now. Yet you've done alot more than my to get it out. I um left the muffler, I did nothing to drop the motor, I did not separate the tail housing or transfer. We just unbolted the trans, starter, shafts, and dropped it. Took like 5 hours. Though we were taking out time. Could probably cut that to 3 or 4. Good stuff tho. Good vid. But f that extra stuff.
Hey. Thanks for the comment. That was actually the first one I had done so probably took some extra steps. Glad you got your running again
Hey I had a question I have a ford ranger 2000 stick shift
When I’m on the freeway once I go over 80 mph it doesn’t want to go higher and the truck or motor starts shaking ?
Does a Manual have a transmission as well ?
good video thank you
Good truck repair content. I'm going to do mine without removing the transfer case.
Great video! I have to swap a transmission in my 94 Mazda B3000 2wd. I’m assuming this will be basically identical despite yours being a 4wd?
Torque converter does not need to be replaced. Nor is it a "while your in there" item. Fluid and filter yes, converter no. Any used trans should come with one in there.
Hey Wesley, I really enjoy your videos, very informative! Have you considered getting an impact and compressor? I bought one for only 35$ at lowes (Kobalt 350)and run it on an older compressor that I bought used. I cant say enough good words about this set up. It makes a world of difference on auto repairs especially on the Iowa rust! I had an impact from harbor freight before but it hardly worked at all.
Thanks for the comment. Yes I have considered it! I hope to upgrade soon (birthday). I'll check out the model you mentioned. Take care and God bless.
My cap on the side of the transmission broke off is there anyway to fix that without replacing the transmission
Were you able to get that lower rear trans housing bolt through the hole without taking the brace back down? You mention this about 38 minutes into the video.
It's been a couple of years since I did this job but I believe I was able to.
Great video thanks. Wondering how long this job would take a 10+ year mechanic. I somehow have escaped this up until now...
It’s hard to say but I would guess 10 hours in a well equipped shop.
what about disconnecting the oil cooler and drain the transmission by running it until empty.... it wont hurt the trans.... and it makes less of a mess taking out the trans....
John Henry Holliday Thanks John for the comment. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend that method. Running the transmission for even a few moments with low fluid can cause damage. That's my understanding...I could be wrong.
We have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4, 3.0L, with a "T" 4R44E transmission that needs to be replaced. We have access to transmissions from a 2002 3.0L 4x4 but there is no sticker telling us what transmission is, and then there is a 2004 with a "D" 5R55E trans. that is a 4x4 with 4.0L. Do you know if either of these two transmissions would work in our 1999?
Great question Ruth! Based on my documentation neither transmission is compatible with your vehicle. You might check out this web site for further information. www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/AutoTrans.html
You might consider rebuilding the transmission that is currently in your Ranger.
Thank you. We went to JustAnswer.com and received this same info. We just had a good deal on the two transmissions and were hoping one of them would work. Thank you for your testimony also. We are also Christians and appreciate what you had here. Keep up the good work!
I don't think we are up to the rebuild. We have no garage to work in and it's hard keeping sand etc out of the mix or should I say snow and ice out of the mix.
you dont need a big can of ptfe lube or even that much. smaller squeeze bottle is sufficient for many times.
I see you have the manual for rebuilding the transmission. Did you rebuild it?
Thanks for the video.
+amtpdb1 Yes. I purchased a used (and broken) transmission from Craigslist and spent several months rebuilding it. It was my first tranny rebuild so I really took my time and studied a lot. If you have the same transmission, I have a few great resources I can pass along.
+Wesley Garner I purchased the book as I always worry about the transmission! Mine is a 4r75r I believe, in a 2004 f150. What model is yours and how difficult did you find it to rebuild and what kit did you use?
Thanks for the answer.
+amtpdb1 Overall the transmission was not to bad to rebuild. I did a couple of things that made it easier. First, I purchased a broken one to rebuild so my vehicle was not down during the rebuild. That took the time pressure off. Second, I befriended a local transmission shop. They were really helpful at points where I needed help. There were some tools I simply did not nor could I fabricate. Finally, I watched a you tube video on the tear down for my model. Here is a similar videoto for your tranny: ua-cam.com/video/36KO1ybLM4w/v-deo.html Hope it goes well for you...God bless
Thanks alot for the information and encouragement. I feel better about trying it myself.
Thanks again.
Is that a John Deere 160 lawn mower
Damn great video my brother
very good content man good work keep it up.
Noah Cooper Thanks Noah for the comment. Glad the video is helpful! Best of luck with your repair!
I began watching this video thinking I had a problem with my transmission, but I think it may actually be what you described at 6:40. Whenever I stop at a stop sign, it seems to clunk back into gear when I accelerate. Do you think my problem is with the transmission, the driveshaft of something else? Could you describe more thoroughly what it's like when the driveshaft is sticking?
The clunk you are hearing is most likely the drive shaft slip yoke.
What other greases can you use? I can't find any of what you used around here.
My experience is this is routine maintenance. Even with the Motorcraft grease, it still has to be done regularly. I think you can use any high quality grease and be fine
Bad ass pastor!
If you have a torch all you do is heat up those bolts or nuts and they come right off, no need on taking off exaust Manifold
how much does it cost me to change an automatic transmission 4x2 2.4 l ranger 2007.
What gaskets did you use for exhaust can I get name and part number asap
well done,thanks
Thanks for the great video. Do you have a ranger transmission rebuild video?
Glad to help. Check out this video for the rebuild. ua-cam.com/video/GBNkCTuQ3So/v-deo.html
good job,thanks !
Great video! Thanks!
+MrJonnabob Glad it was helpful to you!

Good video bro, but do yourself a favor. Go spend $50 at Lowe’s on the 3000 degree tri swirl torch head and get you some mapp gas. It’s not as quick as oxy acetylene, and it doesn’t work 100% of the time, but majority of the time it works for me. I’m a mobile mechanic and that’s what I use
is there a gasket that goes on the front of the transmission????
Tom Fontana good question Tom. No, there is no gasket. no fluids are exchanged between the engine and transmission so there is no need.
ok thank you , i thought that might have been the case just wasnt 100%sure. I have coolant dripping down at the bottom of the transmission where it meets the motor. I'm assuming it is the freeze plugs. I had a rad leak since the end of last winter and had been dumping just water in it. i recently replaced the rad , im thinking with 180k and me putting water in it helped the freeze plug rust out since it is probably steel. I have to take the transmission off and im trying to see what all parts i need to order, such as the transfer case gasket, and probably new plugs and wires since they will come out anyway.
Sounds good. Best of luck with the job. Post back how it all turns out.
Great video i'm doing a automatic 02 Ranger rear wheel drive 2.3L and they i'm sure they are similar removing and installing the trans i know yours was manual and mine is automatic i was wondering how can i go about removing most if not all the transmission fluid before i start i don't want to make a huge mess the least amount of fluid on the ground is safer for the environment also make a cleaner work area ... TIA... Ray
Ray. Thanks for the comment and question. On the automatic, it's difficult if not impossible to prevent a spill. The best you can do is minimize it with a large catch pan. Best of luck with your repair.
What I don't get is that all the Ford Master techs I work with keeps saying that they don't make parts for these and that you can't rebuild these transmissions... Does Ford still offer remanufactured tranny's for these trucks is what I'm asking.
They can definitely be rebuilt and parts are available. Maybe not through Ford
Does the ranger have 6 fuel injectors? Or just 3?
Irwin Oney Thanks for the question. It has six injectors.
I like your style keep it up
Your a good engineer!
Appreciate that comment!
Resurrection Auto no problem man I appreciate the reply!
Thank you for this great video. Could you give me an estimate as to how long this project will take, both removal of the old tranny and installation of a new one? I greatly appreciate it, thank you.
Michael Yoho Good question Michael. It took me about 35 hours. I'm a home mechanic and shot video so maybe you can complete it quicker.
Thank you Sir, I take that as a challenge. I look forward to watching and learning from more of your videos. May God bless you.
Michael Yoho Keep us posted!
I just seen a guy swap transmissions in a hotel parking lot. He didn't bat an eyelash. He just did it, then left.
He told me that there was a bad vibration , and found out the torque converter wasn't balanced right, so he's taking it apart again.
Im sorry to be monopolizing the feed here but can you tell me what holds the torque converter to the transmission? Is it possible to put the torque converter on the flywheel first then slide the tranny in place?
h mc The torque converter just slides on the imput shaft of the transmission. You have to install the torque converter onto the transmission before you install the transmission to the engine
great vid
Thanks for the comment! Glad to be helpful
gotta be careful using compressed air, its very likely water particles can be carried through the compressed air and into the transmission lines
I also forgot to mention it is a 2000 ford ranger XlT ?
Would this video help me with the removal of my 1996 Ranger transmission? I know the transitions are different but I'm hoping the basics are similar...
+DuramaxxDiesel Thanks for the question. The transmissions should be very similar and most of the procedure should be the same. Hope it goes well for you.
Hey man, my 93' ford ranger is nockin pretty hard, I started with a new starter, still knocking. Now I noticed a crack in the flex plate. If I still hear a nock after replacing the flex plate is it safe to say it needs a new transmission? God Bless
Tim Burroughs Thanks for the question. It's really hard to know. Typically a knocking noise is related to a crank shaft bearing. Seems unlikely it's the transmission.
How much ru asking for the truck
yeah I'm just gana pay a ridiculous amount of money for someone to do this for me, there is no way that i can do this :(
What manual did you use to follow step-by-step in removal of your Ranger’s transmission?
No manual. Just figured it out myself
@@resurrectionauto670 well then, great job!
what is something good to use if you don't have a transmission jak??
Good question Cole. Honestly, your really need a transmission jack because you not only need to lift the transmission but also align it to the motor. There is simply no other easy way. I recommend taking a look at Harbor Freight. They have them as little at $160. I hope you're able to make the repair.
Cole Mazer ok miss pissy butt. It was a joke and I'm personally a seven day Adventist so chill XD
Maybe a couple Ratchet straps around the trans and trough the cab.
Also American tool rental has transmission jacks for rent at $45 a day
Harbor freight has a trans jack for $99 or $80 with the 20% coupon.
What were the actual symptoms you were getting before opting for a replacement transmission?
Good question. I had a nasty flare between 1st and 2nd especially under hard acceleration.
❤
will a transmission from a 1996 fit in a 1999?
+Ben L Hey...thanks for the question. I found this website to be really helpful with identifying transmissions and year models. www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/AutoTrans.html
Been a mechanic for 50 years one thing I started doing in the early seventies when I had time and the money and the access is pressure washing or steam cleaning before I take something apart I noticed on the new Transit transmission that got rebuilt with a new court torque converter that the transmission was greasy how come the transmission is greasy on the outside if the transmission got rebuilt on the inside it should have been put in a spin spray to be cleaned off or solvent or something how can you rebuild a transmission with dirt on the outside and not get dirt on the inside?
Good observation Brant. I purchased a broken transmission and spent several months rebuilding it. I probably should have cleaned the case a bit better. Nonetheless, the rebuilt transmission worked well. In fact, I just recently sold the Ranger.
Glad im not the only one who thinks this. I had a carburetor cleaned and rebuilt and it looked dirtier on the outside when I got it back then when I sent it in
Resurrection Auto any vids of you rebuild process? I need to do mine...
Wow nice brother I like not tools The poor people can afford it ) on the cooling system you get one auto parts sale some around 29 dollars the all kit you can put it on front radiator
We’re did you get your replacement transmission?
Thanks for the question Scott. I bought it on Craiglist. It was broken so I rebuilt it first before shooting this video
How did you go about getting the exhaust back on, considering the studs were broken that connect to the catalytic converter?
w00tplayaw00t Great question. The studs can be drilled out and replaced with standard hardware. I took the converter to a local machine shop to remove the studs. It was easy for them.
Ah okay, gotcha. This was my biggest concern in the whole process of replacing the transmission. It didn't even cross my mind to think of this. I'll just pick up some extra nuts, bolts, and washers at the hardware store ahead of time in the event I do end up having to drill out some broken studs. You just made this job a lot easier. Thank you!
w00tplayaw00t You're welcome! Feel free post again if you have questions. Glad to help if I can.
Will do! Thanks so much again.
Do you have a particular parts store that you buy most of your parts from? Im having a hard time finding some of these parts.
BTW Im glad to see you arent afraid to speak of your faith! I look forward to meeting you when we get Home, I hope that many viewers will be there as well!
My transmission just went out on my '99 ranger and I am going to attempt to replace it myself. Im hoping to buy one used here locally in Charleston, SC. Prayers!?
Thanks again for a great video!
h mc Great question. I used transstar industries out if Raleigh NC. Do you plan to do the rebuild yourself?
Well I never did a rebuild before and it makes me a little nervous, I was going to try to just buy a new in hopes that it already worked. do you suggest a rebuild?
h mc The rebuild is extremely difficult. I don't recommend it. If you're just replacing the transmission, you can find the necessary parts are Advance Auto. Best of luck with your repair.
Thanks so much!
" its 30 dollars a can, anyway" dude has spending money for life....
Where did you get your transmission
I bought it off of Craigslist for $20. I had to rebuilt it
Where is your shop sr.??
Will a 98 chevy 1500 transmission fit in a 95 chevy astro van? I'm getting rid of my 98 chevy 1500 because its a 3 seater and I have 6 kids so theirs no use for it anymore. But it still has a good transmission. My chevy astro needs a transmission so I was wondering If I can use that transmission and put it in my 95 chevy astro van and will it run like it should with no problems?
Larissa Weaver To be honest, I don't know. it seems very unlikely. I would call a junk yard. They typically have compatibility books on hand. Best of luck.
Alright Thank you!
God bless you brother and amen
How much did ur transmission cost and where did u get it from?
Brett Cassell I purchased my transmission from Craigslist for $40.00. it was a broken transmission...missing reverse. I rebuilt it first so I could take my time. Then I switched them out in my truck. This was my first transmission rebuild so it took me a long time. It is doable but it is a major project.
I'm a Christian too!!!!!!!
Edward Sokruta Awesome! Glad to hear that my friend.
I just wanna know how the hell you was able to line up the damn torque converter and the damn fly wheel 😂😂
I understand. It’s so difficult especially for the home mechanic laying on his back under the truck. It took me about and hour of wrestling it on mine. Best of luck to you and your repair.
How much, in parts, did this repair cost you in total?
david morrissey Good question David. Probably around $500.
