4R44E Transmission Teardown Inspection - Transmission Repair

  • Here we see a teardown of a 4R44E transmission of a Mazda B3000 3.0 V6. This unit is also on the Ford Ranger and Ford Explorer. Although the unit changes in name, they're virtually the same unit as I explain in the video. 4R44E has 4 pinion planets on the front and rear. 4R55E and 5R55E have 6 pinion planets. 5R55E has an added speed sensor and reluctor on the output shaft for an added signal for the computer to make a 5th gear. Most of the parts are interchangeable between the 3 including valve body. The computer is the one responsible to make this transmission shift 5 times. The added gear is between 1st. and 2nd. applying the overdrive band to give you that extra gear that some call it 2nd prime.

Holly crap no wonder why transmission repairs are so expensive, there's so many pieces that make the transmission work. Great job.

Hey Hiram, I'm tearing apart/rebuilding an A4LD model and am using your video as a very useful visual guide. You've given me some extremely helpful tips about not busting stuff and this is the first time ever I've taken apart a transmission. I'll be rewatching this video multiple times. Thanks for the video!

This video has changed my understanding of automatic transmissions from not knowing much, to absolutely blowing my mind as to the complexity and the engineering that has gone into the development of something that most take for granted every day. You make it look so easy, as obviously you do this stuff all the time. It explains to me that if I have problems with the trany in my truck, take it to someone who knows what their doing! Thank you for the incredible detail in explaining the "what this is and what it does". It does inspire me though to maybe find an old beater, and pull the tranny to tinker with it and see how far I can get! With the quality of the explanations, and a bit of luck, maybe I can! thanks again!

Videos like these are infinitely better than a forum post or manual for someone with no experience. I was told by a shop locally that any labor to my trans at ~230k miles would warrant a new trans anyways because something is likely to fail. I was able to leave the trans in and rebuild the valve body with a shift kit, adjust bands, and replace servo covers in my driveway in one weekend thanks to you. Still shifting great at 260k!

I have three transmissions two 5r 55 East and 14044 or 55 e. I plan to take the good parts out of all three and rebuild One transmission so that my wife can go to work. I look at it this way I'm gaining experience and pushing my knowledge skills above and beyond what I know now. Thank you to the guy that made the video I'm sorry I don't not good with names.

Well, I just found out that half of the people on the internet are wrong and that the Turbine/Input speed sensor is definitely inside the transmission. Time to sell my Explorer. I have no desire to take this transmission apart far enough to replace a sensor when the transmission isn't even that old. Thanks for the great video. Very helpful.

Great video. have been to school and have a couple transmissions under my belt. an A4LD and a C4. Both easy. Starting on a 4R44E next week. Your video shows that its a little more complicated then the others. But your video shows me the differences and im sure to have zero issues with it. Thanks fior the preview.

Awesome video Hiram, When it comes to transmissions, You are the man. I've been watching and learning from all of your videos, but i cant find any answers to my trans problem. I have a 96 explorer 4.o with 4r55e transmission. One day the transmission went out as in all the gears that i selected were all forward gears, even park and neutral. The engine was under load all the time. I am a pretty good mechanic when it comes to rebuilding engines, axles, and manual transmissions. In addition to watching you i felt confident in rebuilding this transmission. So i ordered the rebuild kit which included all the gaskets, clutches, bands and o rings and misc. No hard parts. Rebuilt and installed transmission, New fluid(drained old fluid, didn't do complete flush)What i did find during rebuild was that some of the clutches were welded together and the fluid was filthy. Nothing else seems too bad, But i did replace all clutches and seals. Also, I didn't adjust the bands. I just put them back where the were. Now, my main issue. When i select a gear, I get either no response or only reverse. Park is park, reverse is reverse, neutral is neutral drive and overdrive -no response, 2nd -no response, 1st is reverse. I don't know whats going on. I know this is a long story, But if you could point me in the right direction, That would be greatly appreciated.

I have a pretty high mechanical aptitude my master rebuild kit is on my workbench am going to Napa for the input sensor as well as a neutral safety switch in the morning (most likely will take an Uber it's 426am time to pull this into the shop get ratchets going. Hope you made those follow up vids so I have a clue

@@AutomaticTransmission I ordered the master rebuild kit from global transmission. The only one that contained more was out of stock. As per your advice am waiting on napa to get the input speed sensor in (will be there 8am ). Since I'm having issues starting within park now and then and have to shift the automatic into N tonstart it I'm getting a new neutral safety everything w lose on this thing is from 1999 trans probably that way too.

First off you are one hell of an instructor. I never rebuilt a transmission until now and I've gotta say it. Where did this technology come from? This was not intended for automotive this had to have come from something far more advanced and developed in the 60's after seeing the valve train and check balls that control things simply by rate of flow and pressure. It's absolutely amazing. 1 question in a ranger 3.0 with 4r44e transm do I need both the internal radiator cooler plus an external radiator cooler? No this is the first time it's been opened ofcourse not, I knew from the start the lines weren't going to survive. Just wanna know if I can bypass or even eliminate the external cooler. It's only 6" H x 11"L x 1/2" W it can't be doing too much but dumping all my damn fluid when I'm aggressive having fun out in the middle of NO STORE FOR MILES!!! ITS ONLY HAPPENED TWICE🙄 . Enough that I now have a spare cooler and 4 gal at the cabin lol

Have you ever used Knipex Pliers?
I noticed the ones you have would pinch your hands if you slip. The Knipex has the no pinch design. They’re a little more expensive but well worth it.
Their Cobra pliers to replace the ones you were using and a pair of Pliers Wrench also.
    I swear you’ll love them!

I have a 2003 Ranger 3.O auto.I have a lot of fluid on the bottom of the pan. I had no leaks on the ground though until I raised the front of the truck today to do a routine brake job. I noticed there was a 4in circle of fluid now on the garage floor.
I haven't cleaned anything up to start looking for leaks but I'm betting this is something you know about already LOL.
    What should I do now?
There has been some hard shifts at higher RPMs but shifts pretty smooth overall.
I'm currently disabled and this is my main vehicle to get me back and forth to my spine surgeon and physicals therapy....I'm getting ready for another surgery.....already have 12 bolts....3 are 5in....and 2, -9 inch rods. I wouldn't do the brake but I have to due to lack of funds. I have to do the other side of the brake job tomorrow.
I sure hope this isn't something that's showing and exiting transmission. I don't know if I can handle it with no family anymore. Sorry for the fear rant....lol.
Please let me know what I can do to diagnose deeper.
Thanks so much.....I'm so blessed to have found this video!

OK. Fantastic video. Thanks a million. Question. my transmission was slipping slightly when shifting into first. When I got it back from the repair man, and I use that term loosely. I drove out of the parking lot and it was a huge clunk when shifting into first. It is an automatic transmission ford ranger 2.9, 1986 four-wheel-drive a4ld. we just dropped the transmission and we’re going to rebuild it. First time. Would you recommend a master rebuild kit a week can we get away with the one that cost $164 sa my question is we just drop the transmission and we’re going to rebuild it. The question is they have a super master rebuild kit that comes complete with everything including a shift kit and or just a regular master rebuild kit which does not come with the shift kit and some other things. Considering this is the first time and we’re not exactly sure what to do or how to tell if something is wrong do you recommend going with the super master rebuild kit that does it all or just the regular one that most people usually get?
    Thank so much!

Hi there. Have done an auto to manual swap on a older Chevy sprint. It not only required transmission parts but some body mods as in removing welded on auto mounts and shifter hole covers as well as replacing the entire main wiring harness including removing the dash. Not to mention several small sensors and such required swapping. I suspect there would be some additional other electronic swap outs you would require in your case. Good luck.

Hi Hiram. Thanks for posting this! I do have a question. is the front pump the same on the 4R55E AND 5R55E? I think I might of broken it by not aligning the torque converter on to the splines on the 5R55E and thats the one I need for my '01 ranger.

this guy is good, i think. he's dissecting that transmission like he knows what he's doing but even with a how assemble, i think i'd just convert one to a standard lol. i've done that to a couple trucks, with automatic transmission issues. interesting video though.

Nice video. How do you get the shift linkage out of the inner transmission pan. My 4R44E broke the rod that pushes the pin in the parking pawl. And it also broke the pin. Is this a replaceable item without tearing the transmission down?

very interesting video. i know nothing about auto box's and found this very usefull.
i have a question if you have the time to answer it for me.
i have an a4ld from a ford scorpio in the uk on the back of a 2.9 v6. i want to use it on an explorer 4.0 sohc motor.
will it be up to the job or can i/should i rebuild it with heavy duty parts and can i switch the 4th gear and locking converter manually as i am not running the explorer ecu.
the whole setup is destined for a van that will weigh around 2.5 to 3 tonnes.
    thanks, paul

Hi Hiram? Do Honda's parallel shaft design with internal filter is a forever an incurable weak point as oppose to planetary design with external filter in your opinion? Also, how good is GMC, Hyundai's transmission as compare to Nissan's Jatco and Toyota Aisin?

I have a 4R55E in my '96 Explorer. Loss of reverse, unless you really rev ir....won't upshift from 1st till over 3,000 rpm. Going to attempt a rebuild with a new input speed sensor, new clutches & steels, o-rings seals, and gaskets, & was wondering If it's necessary to change all the bushings? Just hoping my rear needle bearing, and sprags are ok. Also putting in a shift kit.

I could take that apart...No problem...But I would do the Snoopy dance if I could EVER put it back together again : )

The 5Rs seem to be much harder on the bores than the 4r. To get 5 gears the transmission the trans works the bands more and is double the wear and tear on each upshift cycle.

Hiram, This is a bit off topic. I have a Ford 4r44e and would like to know how many times will the torque converter drop in when spinning to get it to seat? Thanks you have great videos.

Hiram, Great video. Question: My son has a 1999 Ford Ranger V6/3L 4R44E Transmission that abruptly quit going in reverse although it works fine in all forward gears? Any ideas on an economical fix or is a total rebuild necessary to fix the problem? Thanks/milt

Thanks excellent video. My 4r44e used to make a whinnying sound before it change gears. Then it start linking oil and stop working. What will cause this problem? I have never rebuild a transmission before, but after have the unit rebuild 3 time and it did not work correct, I am now considering rebuilding it myself. Thanks in advance.

Hiram, You can tell I'm new at this so bare with me. You say that the gasket on the valve body gets torn because the VB bolts get loose. My question is should you use locktite on the bolts? Or would it cause some issues with the trans later on?
