      @@WholesaleAutomatics Gday my 6r80 wouldnt go into gear untill i put Lucas into it now its ok with some slip..Was getting on OB2 SCAN - Shift Solenoid Pressure Control
      A(A)82psi and 46psi on D after lucas added and before that 0.2,0.06 the others not much change..Is it valve body.Cheers

    As a ranger owner in NZ I very much appreciated the vid , I used an Auckland based auto Trans specialist guy to sort out the shudder in the gear box and he correctly identified the valve body as the problem , Inhave suggested he get in touch with you guys and sends over valve bodies for rebuilds , the cooler thermostat was an eye opener , might get him
    To replace the existing one with your kit in order to get the system
    To run cooler and thus save the valve body wear much appreciated

    🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m old skool, so manual gearboxes are what I’m happy with, but this just does my head in so I won’t be playing with one of these any time soon. Great job thanks 👍🏿

    Had my PX2 ranger valve body replaced with the nomand.. nice sharp gear changes.. after watching this video I know I need the billet torque converter to make the ranger spot on. Great videos

    Great video. I have a 2020 Ford Everest with the 10r80 10 speed transmission. Bought as a demonstrator from Heartland in Sydney. About 4 weeks ago doing 80 kmh on a rural road, a Transmission Overheat light came on and I immediately lost all motive power. I was forced to make a quick decision to brake and park the car on the road verge. Engine would rev but the car wouldn't move an inch. According to the Transport Department's REC-00320 (which I had to convince them it was under) this was a known issue that could have led to accident and death! Yikes! All that was displayed was the yellow engine service light. I have been dealing with Ford Motor Company and Kloster and 4 weeks later the car has been diagnosed as requiring a replacement transmission valve body, which is consistent with your video. It also requires replacement transmission pump gears (which is consistent with REC-00320) and today I'm told a replacement torque converter. Ford have twice refused to replace the vehicle under ACL in circumstances where I could have been killed. I made a complaint to NSW Fair Trading and Ford Motor Company did not respond to them. Fair Trading told me to take it NCAT. I have serious safety concerns for for this vehicle which experienced a catostrophic failure. Any thoughts on what might have gone wrong and should I be concerned for my safety even after the vehicle is repaired?

    Great video. I had a PK and took it back to Ford 3 times during the warranty period due to intermittent faults. After the warranty expired it got worse, Ford said " you have metal in your transmission". I got it fixed and sold it and bought a manual.

    So good to see a tear down of one of these auto’s and glad the internals are generally reliable. I have already fitted one of your coolers and a thermo bypass valve to my PXII Ranger and also a B & M filler tube/dip stick so I can the fluid regularly.

    Love what you have done here, and how you've done it as well. Exceptionally informative, and downright detailed.
    I own & drive an '18 model 3.2 Wildtrak, back here in South Africa, and honestly don't know of anyone who could and/or would be able to do such a high end re-build of this nature.
    If ever (touch wood it doesn't) my box "goes" I might actually consider getting a fully refurbished, and cooled, unit in from you guys.
    BTW, my car currently has 57k kms on the odo, as I also own & use other vehicles as well as a motorcycle or two, on a "rotational" basis.

    Great breakdown and analysis. I would add that the ongoing mindset of using the torque converter clutch strategy of allowing slip instead of on-off full lockup ( to compensate for these smaller engines to move a big mass) adds miniscule converter clutch material floating through the valve block wearing like an abrasive and in some cases ruins and locks the pump bushing to the converter after blowing out the pump seal. Now add the magical lifetime fluid, and inadequate trans fluid cooling leads to failure imo.

    Within a few weeks of picking up my ranger I spoke to several transmission specialist including you guys to get some advice as I wasn't fully convinced by ford telling me i didn't need to get my trans serviced until 150 000 and got a cooler fitted and the thermal bypass valve changed and it gets serviced every 20000 it's nice to know that most of the issues are to do with valve body

    I just want to say thank you for going through this 6r80 gearbox tear down. I've got a 2014 bt50 that's on its 2nd auto, the first was replaced under warranty. The second box hasn't really run right for a long time, so I decided to drop the plan, replace oil and filter. I did notice small metal chunks which I reckon was from the old box as they probably reused the old converter. Regardless once I changed the oil and filter i noticed when I put oil back in the box it took 2.5L more oil than what came out! The bastards under Filled the second box which I reckon has damaged the valve body as its still shifting a bit crap, especially when cold. I used a vacuum pump to draw out the fluid which is how I know exactly how much oil came out. Anyway, I might come and visit your shop some day to see if a valve body upgrade is the way to go for what i want out of the box.

      I may be wrong but there would still be fluid in the torque converter, that's where your missing 2.5L is sitting... I usually measure the oil output and refill the amount I took out. 2.5L low in fluid that gearbox would hardly be working. :)

    Had my px2 since 2016, flex plate went 4 weeks ago, I wish I'd seen this ages ago. Had the billet torque converter put in and have done 2000 km since and hope there are no further problems.

    Recently my Ford XLT150 had undergone that Operation 😅 started with jerking and Chocking of the Transmission gear between 3 and 4 knowingly the process was just amazing to know Engineering was something to Respect

    Good video thanks. Its a very specialized job and your experience makes all the difference. I would enjoy the satisfaction of rebuilding and adding a few upgrades to make a better box than the factory. Much as I would love to give it a go, this is a job for the pros with the experience and the skill and the tools.
    I personally would avoid Rangers like the plague but the epicyclic gearset was impressively heavy duty. and the gearbox as a whole looks up to the job of handling heavy duty without too much strain.
    I agree 100% about the oil temp killing the oil and then the lifetime is finished. My Commodore had an external oil cooler and the oil never got dark even when I was a bit naughty and didn't change the fluid as regularly as I should. Manufacturers try all sorts of things to eke out a bit of extra fuel economy with thinner oils being one of their tools even if it is not the best for a long happy life. In the end just keeping fluid temps down and changing the oil occasionally is a no brainer vs the $$ of trans failure
    On the subject of the solenoid calibration, I am pretty sure that electronic diesel injectors are calibrated and when replaced, the correction has to be put in the ECU for pretty much the same reason.
    I also noticed the valve body didn't have lots of ball check valves like the older designs where it was critical to put them all back in exactly the right place or the transmission would malfunction requiring another teardown. Maybe something has got "simpler"?
    The flexplate design has obviously been "improved" for cheaper production rather than improved engineering.

    Very interesting. My 2012 3.2 4 x4 auto Wildtrak has done 296 000 km. Never had a problem with the gearbox. The gearbox oil has never been change. Ford stated the gearbox oil is a "livetime oil", no mention of how long the livetime is. Loved your video, only probleam, is the sound volume is low, a specialy when you turn your heads away from the microphone. Much easier than a gearbix to fix. Great going guys.

      Lifetime oil = till the oil dies and subsequent lubrication failure kills the transmission.

    Great video and relevant to me with a PX1 Wildtrak. I read many posts in forums rubbishing the Ranger/BT-50 gearboxes but it seems your experience and this video shows that on the whole they are not that badly constructed (aside from the parts you have mentioned).
    My Wildtrak is approaching 180K kms and doesn't do much towing at all but does frequent 4WD trips (High Country mostly and not seriously hard core). The only trans work that has been needed is to replace the trans fluid as it was tested and found to have a small amount of water present. Even doing that had a noticeable change in how smooth the trans operated.
    I was also advised that adding an aftermarket trans cooler with my use cases would not be good value for money... however I am now wondering if spending a grand on a cooler and bypass setup might fend off the need to spend a lot more later on.
    Ford Service told me that the slightly rough gear changes when the car is cold is due to the trans fluid not yet being up to operating temp and once it warms up it becomes smoother.. something I would agree with.
    If a trans cooler is fitted, does the trans fluid being used also get changed ? I only ask because I was reading somewhere that the OEM fluid is rated to operate at approx 80 degrees, which is pretty much where my engine sits under most normal conditions.
    Besides regularly (what is regular for this by the way ?) changing the trans oil, are there any other things that should be done to keep the Ranger transmission in good nick ?

      Chris, my advise is Nomad Valve Body that comes with the thermal bypass valve and you will end up with a fully serviced transmission including new oil filter and pan gask and the oil cooler.

      It only takes one crap part to build a bad reputation even if the rest is up to the job. Fords still have a reputation for weak front ends thanks to the original falcon even though it was quickly fixed. Still wouldn't touch a Ranger though.

      Have you changed the clutch to a single mass flywheel mate ?
      There's a kit out there that fixes this problem

      If or when you get this fixed get the gearbox mechanic to replace 1st gear also. I got the 5th gear upgrade on my pj, 6 months later found out that 1st is also common to pop out. It’s not as big a problem as 5th because you don’t sit in 1st very often, but it still will catch you out in traffic or low speed driving when sitting in 1st. 👍

    Fantastic educational video. It amazes me that the salaries that CEO's of Ford receive and they cant implement these minor changes to make Ford Customers buy their product with confidence. Goes to show these guys at the top are there to see how much they can fleece the Company and the consumers, what a sad world we are creating. I have a Ranger and boy, by the time you pay all the costs to buy and run the bloody thing there's hardly anything left to fix the flaws that could happen to it.

    Hi Guys,
    Very informative, I have 22 px3 ranger with this 6 speed box. I have fitted good quality cooler & your bi pass valve, but still having trans temp problems. I have actually chatted with you before about it. Towing a 2.2 t van, trans just very slowly continually climbs in temp never settling at any stage. I have since open large mouth vent in under tray & also fitted on the road a thermo fan on the cooler, running constant. The longer you drive the higher the temps get, no matter how low ambient temps are only 1 degree at a time , 3-4 hrs driving even under 20 degrees ambient, would be getting close to 100 mark, in 25-30 degree temps, would be heading towards 110 degrees. I have never let it get over 108 degrees but is a real pain driving to temps on a screen & hate to know what it would do at 40+ days. Have tried towing in lower gears but only heats up much quicker, slower speeds in higher gear hold temps down a bit. Any suggestions? Has only done 50k still under warranty. Any chance the new bi pass is restricting fluid flow?
    Everything works as should & use manual mode but need it to last a long time. My son fitted the same cooler & bi pass + your nomad body & never gets over 70 degrees px2 170 k. Cheers Peter

      Can you tell me the dimensions of the oil cooler you installed. Was it a single or a dual cooler?

    Interesting... this is probably the best possible explanation I've come across so far. My Ranger is a 2016 PX2 and I get a weird shudder in low revs, taking off or coming to a stop at low speed. Generally 1st to 2nd or vice versa. Initially thought it could be TC slipping but at speed it holds revs so now I wonder if it's valve body.. or maybe tailshaft?

      Yeah I get a similar thing in my 2012 px ranger ( v2 valve body though), Would like to know if there is something other than TC that could be causing it. Generally when I slow down to a light then it goes green and i speed up it can clunk into gear currently

    the cooler bypass will also save that leadframe, the plastic gets destroyed from high heat, we run a fleet of F150"s and a few years ago we installed a cooler bypass, larger coolers and removed the lines from the radiator, all our problems went away, we are in California so it is a warm climate, our 6r80's run at 140f

    My BT50 was 5 years old and would slam into 3 gear. I had it rebuilt under warranty.
    The problem was fixed. I was never told the problem

    I think the torque converter plate has sheered off my 2016 ranger, like in the start of the video. It made a bang and shut down. Now the engine starts fine but has a loud metallic clanging in bellhousing, no gears at all.

    Amazing video and thank you for finally giving us all idea about how this looks and works. I just had my Torque converter failing on me and I upgraded to Billet one plus added a few other parts all up came to 8.5K. Problem is that after the upgrade and other additions, it feels like the car has less power, feels kind of lazy. Do I need to tune the transmission? Engine was tuned a while ago.

      It is likely that when the Billet torque convertor was built it was built with a low stall speed. This is common and normally quite beneficial as you will have a better fuel economy now but it is noticeable and would feel the way you describe. See if you come around to it as it is the better option.

    My px1 shit gearbox completely at 52k.
    Sounded like a bag of bolts in a washing machine.
    Even when it was ok, if you came down a hill and knocked it back a gear manually, it would drop to idle and speed up like it was in neutral.
    Terrible if you have a trailer on. 😢
    Then it got a new one at ford, 20k later it was slipping and still didn’t hold refs down hill.
    I sold it at 79k and told the Bloke who bought it that it sometimes slipped in 3rd.
    He took it to ford and got it done again.
    14mth I had it as a work Ute and was glad to see the back of it.
    Got 210k on my 2019 Colorado and haven’t had an ounce of drama.
    Weird thing is I had a 2017 mustang Gt that was tuned and 70k klms with zero issues.
    I was told that the mustang had two differing factors.
    The tune of the box and the torque converter.
    I’ve now got a next fen raptor with the 10r80 (some say it’s a 10r60 but it’s 10r80 on my paperwork).
    Hopefully i get no issues with it.
    Very keen to hear what causes them to go from 3k revs in gear driving and dropping to idle when you lift off.
    That was my highest concern , zero year braking when you absolutely needed it.

    Just like the Hillman Super-Minx auto. This one was a '63 version.
    Lost drive, because the lugs on the back of the so-called flex-plate snapped or wore off.
    It was some kind of Borg-Warner trans.
    Unsure what I did with it.
    May have tried changing it to a manual, or possibly repowerd it with a 1725 manual setup, taken from a later model that got crushed when a house was demolished on top of it - it had sat, unnoticed in the garage.
    Anyway, hard-case to see a similar fault reappearing some 60 years later...

    Clunks n bangs, flairing of rpm. Black oil after 3 days and a couple of hundred km. Then fitted a reco box through Ford. I fitted the bypass and your cooler. Going to change fluid in new trans in coming weeks so it'll be interesting to see the colour after 12 months and 60k km. Guess major failure of the valve body due to heat. Always towed in 5th.

    Thanks for the teardown, i have a 2018 3.2 ranger wildtrak without any failt codes and the problem is that when you come to a stop it feels that it still kick down and it feels like you get a kick on the butt, Ford replaced the torque converter with a new one fhey say it was slipping according to the diagnostic tests and after the new torque converter and oil change it still do the same kick on the butt feeling. What could they be missing here

      If it never used to do it and it does now and you also have over 100,000K's on it then it will most likely be the valve body for sure. Heavy duty Nomad Valve body will get that sorted for you.

    Rod just a tip. When you mention something like the torque converter plate on a Ford you should tell people how it is done correctly by Toyota. The plate on a Hilux is bolted on firmly not held on with little rivets. The diff and most other things on a Ranger are weak. Every part of the Ranger fails as you said.

    Ranger is a tough work horse of a truck. The auto trans are a week point. Auto trans are great until they don't work. Then they are a pain in that rear part.

    Thank you very for this great video. Our Mazda BT50 with a Ford Auto Gearbox will not go into Reverse gear. We changed the wiring loom that goes to the gear box and changed the oil as it was very dirty. What do you think we should do next to fix this problem?

    The first fluid and filter change should be at 15k, then every 30k after that. It is the clutch and steel debris in the oil that acts as a lapping compound wearing the aluminum valve body out. Didn't have that problem much with the old steel valve bodies because steel is harder than the aluminum being used these days.

    Hi Rocket.. love your Videos. It was great to see in detail what is involved in these repairs... I have a Y62 that I just purchased and Nissan said it doesn't need an auto service ever. Its done 150 thousand klms. Do you think you can make a video of you guys servicing my Transmission and showing everyone why they shouldn't believe the huge Auto manufacturers life time claims?

      Oil is a lot cheaper than rebuilds. I would service it earlier rather than later.
      I have a 2012 Kia Sportage with 140k on it. Apparently this is the mileage to service the trans if it has had heavy duty use such as city driving or towing which my car had not. I changed the fluid which was looked about the same as the oil out of the dead trans in the video and replaced it with Penrite LV ATF ( SP4 spec). Not too hard a job but it does seem to be smoother shifting and 10 years is plenty even for a full synthetic oil regardless of the manufacturers ideas IMHO.

    I own a Mazda BT-50 and had my torque converter plate come off just like you showed in this video. I ended up replacing the entire transmission and another torque converter. But I kept the replaced transmission. But would really like to contact you guys, to have a conversation you really know your stuff. 👍🏽

      We have seen no issues for the 2024 convertor so far Ian. The auto I ok but run a little hot all the time. A cooler I all you really need unless you tow heavy weights then I recommend cooler and deep cast pan. Here is the web link:

    Loved every bit of the video and I must say I have learned alot from this... Having a gear drop on a BT50 not all the time but comes one of, did a diagnostic scan and resulted in vehicle speed sensor out of testing range and one on output shaft sensor so i think its a faulty lead frame. Cleaned all the solinodes and all work fine, but if you or anyone can give tips would be greatly appreciated thanks big fan of your channel from 🇵🇬

    Not sure if you respond to comments.
    I’ve got a Diesel Ford Territory 2013 with the 6r80 transmission. When powering up a hill the car will shift up and loose power until it downshifts and revs above 2000rpm. When I takeoff, sometimes I feel a huge clunk, almost like being run up the back of. Also when coasting down hill my RPM sometimes bounces between 700 to 1200 rpm.

    I have a similar problem with 2015 Everest in shuddering in low gears. Would a flash scan pick up valve body problems as I’ve had it to an auto mechanic and they scanned it and nothing came up. They done a fluid change on it and it’s still the same. I’m taking it to ford next month to see if they can find the issue. Great vid guys
