And yeah, people didn't wanna talk about it, but season 4 was the last time it was consistent and it's totally because they had to start making it up themselves. Season 5 was lukewarm trash and you could tell that they never had the ability to create from their own mind. Like, it's one thing to not have interesting new ideas of your own, being creative can be hard! But as film and TV writers, D + D should at least have been capable of maintaining in-world consistency. And that, truly, is the mark of a terrible writer and creative lead.
Yaaaas. Preach, brothers and/or sisters! So many people convinced themselves that season 5-7 were good (usually by convincing themselves that all the dumb shit was actually gonna lead up to something super clever, which was the style at the time), but for me once season 8 rolled around it was literally exactly what I was expecting and I wasn't even mad. Any more. It was absolutely in line with the previous seasons and I don't think it was honestly *that* much worse than the one before. Arya's whole arc about turning into this super-paranoid killer ending on her "kind of just forgetting" to watch out for THE ONE THING currently central to her storyline and the focus of her fight for survival is the same as Daenerys "kind of just forgetting" to look out for the ships that were the only reason for her to be up there at that time in the first place. I lost hope for GoT back when they were starting to go off-book and do their own shit in the "beyond the wall" bits and the Behind The Scenes bits were full of writers or whatever talking about how it was important to show that the mutineers (who for some reason also got KARL FOOKIN' TANNER for no discernible reason) as totally evil, rather than acknowledge that pretty much all of the people at the wall had been forcibly conscripted into the Watch, many of them as results of a justice system weighted entirely in favor of the nobility and the wealthy, meaning plenty of innocent people got sent up to the wall for being poor, and THEN forced to march against a bunch of ice-ghosts and zombies and shit. Like A Feast For Crows was... uhh... not a great book. But beyond the fact that I'm sure D&D never even read it, the general *message* of it is pretty important to ASoIaF's whole theme of deconstructing the classic fantasy tropes of rigid good and evil. Joffrey can both be a monster *and* pitiable for having never really had much of a chance to be anything other than what he was. But then again D&D don't like... *believe* in themes, maaaan... fucking hacks!
