  • I thought I would talk about this side of my illness with Crohn's disease and more about why I had ostomy surgery. While I try to stay lighthearted about things like the memory loss, sometimes it upsets me to think I may never get those memories back. Crohn's didn't manage to steal my life, but it stole my memories (and some of my colon... stupid Crohn's...)

    THANK YOU! My sepsis was in 2015, my memory ever since, is like swiss cheese. I can remember some things from my long term memory, but my short term memory is a real problem. I can have a conversation with my husband today, and remember none of it tomorrow. I live TOTALLY by reminders on my phone (when to pick my daughter up from school, days she gets out early, what I need from the store...etc). It is INCREDIBLY frustrating! I will go to the kitchen to get a bottle of water and when I get there, I have no idea what I went in there for. I haven't met anyone with memory problems that has had sepsis (actually, I haven't met anyone that has had sepsis). I was THRILLED to see I wasn't alone! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

    Funny you should mention having trouble with words. I have noticed that also and as I research sepsis and it's after affects im learning that more than almost killing me sepsis has affected my day to day life. Thanks for the information.

    I'm glad I found your video. I have gone thru the same memory issues. Been blaming myself. A little relief not knowing it's just me. I get so frustrated sometimes and keep things to myself because of it.

    i have memory problems too after sepsis. mostly can't remember very simple words like i couldn't remember "infant" recently and also forgot the word "dramatic". so i tend to stutter a lot and when i have conversations wit people i have to think up what i am gonna say first so i don't feel awkward when i have to think of a word.

    Thank you for the info! I have been blaming the memory loss on all of the antibiotics that I have been on for the last couple of years. (Flagyl, Cipro, etc...). It never occurred to me that it was a by product of the sepsis. That explains a lot!

    I had a very similar experience. I had a bowel resection. Things didn't heal correctly leading to sepsis, emergency surgery, colostomy, and intubation for a week. In the 1 1/2 years since sepsis, I also had chemotherapy. My memory is finally improving. Returning to work, was quite the challenge.

    Four years ago I had sepsis and cellulitis in my legs. Was in the hospital for 5 days in the worst pain of my life. Five days before I tripped on some broken sidewalk and fell on my hands and knees. That day it started to hurt more than it should have and I went to the Instacare where they took x-rays to check that nothing was broken, poked and prodded me, found nothing and sent me home. Two days later the pain was worse and I went back, same result. Another day passes and I go back again knowing something isn't right. They sent me to the ER where they examined me and gave me an introvenous antibiotic, and a prescription for another antibiotic to get at the drug store. The day after that I went back to the ER with a fever and my leg was so hot that they put some towels soaked in ice water on them and a few minutes later two nurses were surprised at how hot the towels had gotten. I was in the worst pain of my life for almost 2 months before it started to fade away slowly. Since then my overall health has slowly declined.

    Hi…I live in Colorado. I listened to your experience with sepsis and nearly fell over when u got to your memory loss.
    Before I tell u my age, I’m a mom, a sister, an aunt, and a Grammy. I ended up nearly dying from sepsis that started when I had 3 large kidney stones blocking my kidney. So urine started outputting into my body. Then Sepsis. I almost died and my 2 kids slept in the ICU room I lived in for about 5-7 (?) days then in a result room another - i don’t know how many.🤷‍♀️. My sepsis story was the worst experience of my life. From what I’m told by my daughter, every day in ICU people came in and out for many days hoping I would start putting out urine in the urine bag. They were terrified for me. My kids were told if I make it through the first 48 hours, I have good odds of making it. I was horribly sick, delirious, etc. I survived, but my memory loss feels terrible. I’ll forget what I was saying if I have one distraction, I will forget words in the middle of talking and long-term memories alarm better for me. But shirt-term memory is bad.
    I would love to one day tell my story like u have done and others I have watched on UA-cam. How did u go about it,
    If u don’t mind schooling me on it. It’s okay if you are too busy. You are a young woman who is brave, sincere, perky and funny, sweet and more. The courage and strength u have shown is of hero material! I applaud u and admire your strength.
    I am 61 years old and I never had memory issues until I suffered severe sepsis with septic shock roughly 5-7 (?) years ago. Please take care and keep your pretty smile blooming. U remind me of my oldest granddaughter.

      Thank you so much for the kind words - and I’m sorry to hear you’ve experienced a similar thing 😔 Hopefully you are still able to do the things you love with the people you love - that’s what I’ve found matters the most in life! ❤️
      In terms of sharing your own story on UA-cam, I’m the worst teacher 🤣 But there are lots of tutorials online that could help. The most important thing is to just be authentic and be yourself. 🤍 Take care!

    Wow Thaila, what you described with the memory loss and word stammering is exactly what I experienced while on predisone last year, and I still feel like I have those problems today :(

      Thaila Skye Yes, the memory loss + difficulty in finding words + stammering ends up being a huge chain of frustration! Hopefully it's something we'll eventually recover from.

      I was on predisone as a child, for reasons totally different than my colitis, it completely ruined me. I was one and off of it 5 times from the ages 7-16. When I was on it, I was like a tiny drunk person with absolutely no memory of the simplest things. I very vaguely remember certain things from those time periods. Now, I remember things, but since having my colitis issues last summer my short term memory is pretty dodgy.

      Memory loss is part of Post-Sepsis Syndrome - I have it as well, but never had Prednisone or anything like it.

    I have the same problems with memory issues after sepis so I completely understand. I was going through my daughters photos earlier from when they were younger and I got so sad because I've lost so many memories of they're childhood. It's all so fuzzy. I'm really hoping it comes back but it's been 3 and 1/2 years now.

      My sweet husband and I were talking about that difficult year last week. And my husband told me that the Dr. said 'i would never be normal, again'. (He had never told me) ANYBODY ELSE MIGHT BE SAD, BUT I HAVE TRIED SO HARD TO BE THE WORKING, MULTI-TASKER, DO EVERYTHING FOR EVERYBODY, BUT I HAVEN TAKEN A LIFETIME VACATION. I QUIT THAT ROLE.!!!! Good Luck to you!!!

      +Barbara Ellis It sounds like you have a supportive husband. I'm happy for you :) unfortunately my marriage broke up shortly after my hospital stay. After all I've been through, I can honestly say I am very lucky to be alive and have the support of my loved ones. I don't know what I'd do without them. Each day is a gift. I wish you the best and good luck to you and yours!

    Unbelievable! My mother went into hospital in Knoxville TN Jan 27,2020 with sepsis in her foot. The Dr did surgery on Friday and she was being treated with IVs for sepsis. Monday the Dr saw her said her foot was healing good. So they put her in a regular room. Then the stomach Dr said she had some kind of stomach problem and she needed immediate surgery where she would have to wear the colonoscopy bag?. After surgery he said she was fine and ready to go to rehab/therapy that was adjoined to hospital. Well they transferred her. Mexand my sister's all lived out of state. They said she is fine you can go home. Well her brother was there. She suddenly started loosing her hearing and then running temps and started imaging things. When I went to Knoxville and got on the floor my mother was I could actually hear my mother screaming in pain. And when u get off the elevator u have to go thru 2 big doors. I was in shock what I saw. She was completely naked with a pee wee pad under her that was so soaked it was passed onto the plastic. They told my mothers brother they only change it every 12 hrs. I talked to her nurse she said they give her a tramadol every 6 hrs. I screamed a tramdol? I told her don't waste your time on the tramdol. Their was dried feces on the plastic covering of her bed. And I had to get down and talk into her ear so she could hear me. She wreaked. My brother n law said they have not bathed her or anything. Her hair was falling out and she was talking out of her head and had temp and low blood pressure. I told the nurse there is an infection or something bad is really going on. They kept her in therapy dept. It was Friday at 4:30. I pulled the pee pad out and took pics and the dried feces. When I got there she begged for water. I went to vistors lounge 6 times just to get her water at one episode. I then left therapy and walked to hospital and asked for the administration dept. When I got to the office I was crying the head administrator took me to conference room with her assistant. I showed her the pictures I took. They were appalled and said they will take care of issue and it will never happen again. Well I forgot my phone charger so I went back to my mother's room. When I walked in the administrator and assistant with a nurse was cleaning her . The room wreaked of odor. The nurse said to me this was not my patient. Anyway, covid arrived I told them there is some kind of infection going on and that she is talking out of her head and in very bad pain with back and temp. Nothing was done till about almost 2 weeks. She never left that room for MRI x-ray or anything. She had developed sepsis in her spine. Be very very painful and very long time to get rid of. They let my mother die. They did start giving her IVs almost 2 weeks later. This should have never happened. The hospital was tennova north in Knoxville, tn.never send it go there u will never check out. Would have loved to sue the hospital but me and my 2 Sisters live in different states. If anyone has an answer please letvme know. This hospital needs to be shut down

    The memory thing can be a result of low/no B12 ... or the other B vitamins(cause they work together) but mostly in my experience B12 anemia... Sometimes one can not absorb it through the digestive system if there is trauma/injury/low stomach acid/or some other digestive issue (chronic diarrhea etc.)preventing the absorbing of vitamins/minerals... So B12 injections for life can be only way to correct problem. It is something you should check out... It can improve the memory thing... My experience any ways... All the best!!!

    Almost 2 years ago I went into septic shock as a result of colon failure and I don’t remember very much about the first 6 weeks after I initially got sick. Also I’ve always had poor time comprehension skills because I have what is usually referred to as level 1 autism but all of the sudden it seems to have gotten worse and I can’t figure out why

    That's very strange I didn't know that was a side effect of Crohns. That's possibly why I have a hard time remembering my teen years. And I've always said to people "how do you even remember that" when they're talking about their younger years. Makes a little bit of sense now.

    • @ThailaSkyeVlogs
      @ThailaSkyeVlogs  8 років тому

      It's not really a side effect of Crohn's, it's the side effect of sepsis. As I went into septic shock, my body had to start prioritising, so looking after organs etc. and so my cognitive functioning started to suffer because, well, my body went into survival mode. :(

    • @recreate3204
      @recreate3204 8 років тому +1

      Thaila Skye Oh Okay I read up on it a little bit and seen a study of like 698 people who had Crohns and took remicade also had Sepsis or something along those lines. That doesn't sound fun though. :/ Hope you're doing better and have it under control.
