Fantastic video. Many thanks for this. Joy Division, Cure , Depeche Mode, Wire and Echo and the Bunnymen were played at all the SF clubs like I-Beam, DV8 etc. The clubs played the maxi-single versions of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" , "Boys Don't Cry", and "Measure for Measure", and Wire's "Ahead". There will be a docu-series about the Specials that will come out this year I think on the BBC in the UK. Birmingham was an epicentre for a lot great 80s bands.
This is exactly why I watch your channel. You're appreciation of the best music has to offer. I was a Japan fan from their beginings. And most of the others on show here. Treasure is indeed the Cocteau's swansong. Many thanks.

The "clinky clanky" '80s drums, as you put it, completely soured me on the decade. Of course this video shows me how much truly great stuff there is out there! Cheers!
The first New Order Ep is essentially a JD record without Ian. The first record was a sign of relief that they were going to make it without Ian. Not too much after that.

There’s another fantastic box set that’s just been released called ‘Young Limbs Rise Again The Story Of The BatCave’ (The BatCave was an early eighties London Club which started playing early dark pop)’ It a six album set, sort of the evil twin to what is contained on the box you’ve shown. It swerves between PIL, Magazine,The Associates,The Cramps & loads of more obscure dark pop.
What an encyclopedic grasp of the industry you have, Mazzy. I'm trying to nail down the 'era' on review here. It seems to be 1979 - 1985 or so. Maybe extending as far as the close of the decade. Including my grad school years where my buddies that were still listening to records had gone in one of two directions: Rock Lobster or Elvis Costello. It was a time of transition. Bands like Boz Scaggs, Bob Seger, Steely Dan, Al Stewart, ELO, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel and even Fleetweeo Mac were receding. The 80s listening room was dominated by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Mike + Mechanics, U2, Costello, a Bowie resurgence (with Stevie Ray Vaughn), Alan Parsons, and Elton John. The latter, despite being more or less in a career/personal slump for the entire period, and further, still managed to put out 10 drop dead 1980s tracks. I remember hearing Van Halen 1984 being played in an Orange County state beach shower room, on a boom box at MAX volume.... a-m-a-z-i-n-g sound. Dire Straights is probably the stand out band for me in the period. Brothers in Arms more or less sounding the clarion call for the LP Era. But I was also still listening to the BIG ONES. The Stones Some Girls (78), Tattoo You (81) and Steel Wheels (89) got as much play as their classic 70s albums. There was Lennon's last album in 1980. McCartney had clipped his wings. Yet, still pushed out Tug of War {82} and a handful of singles. But it was left to Beatle George to be at it again, with Cloud 9 (87), and the Wilbur's project (89) and (90). We can close the decade on Public Television's 'Black and White Night' featuring Roy Orbison backed by Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, T Bone Burnett, Tom Waits, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, KD Lang, and Jennifer Warrens. Kris Kristofferson was among the 'stars' in the audience. October 1989. What a decade: the CD Invasion, and (for some of us) the dawming realization that we were doing more than just buying records. There was a collection taking shape, Listening back was becoming as interesting as listening forward.
Looking forward to this comp. Ours is on the way! :) There was a second Dalis Car release - InGladAloneness, which came out the year after Karn's passing. There is a stunning version of Brel's "If You Go Away" on it.

Mazzy - LOVED this review as a mid-X'er. I just recently completed NM original pressings of New Order's Low Life / Power Corruption & Lies / Brotherhood / Technique ...the OGs sound amazing.
GREAT STUFF, Mazzy! Absolutely wonderful package of music (wish I could afford the 7-disk set... lol)... Wilson is right on for including XTC's epic "Complicated Game" in this set (one of the greatest tunes of the newer generation of bands at the crest of that amazing newer wave)... and Kate Bush's "Waking The Witch" fits right in, as well... but I agree that "THE DREAMING" is her most adventurous work... sort of the flip side of Peter Gabriel's III album. Dark, Literate, Adventurous... and artists at the peak of their creative powers. Two missing ingredients spring to mind: I"m surprised and disappointed that neither THE CHAMELEONS (their first three albums are just incredible) nor DANIELLE DAX (maybe 2nd to Kate Bush in the adventurous list...) made the cut... as they seemed to fit the bill, perfectly. But can't have everything in there, I guess. Cheers!
Great collection of 80s albums, this is one genre of music I know very well outside my R&B soul records. Some other great groups to mention are OMD first five albums. Ultravox early albums, Propaganda, German group. Wire the eighties albums, they tend to get over looked. 🤘
Mazzy, with the Cure, the song you can't remember is possibly the track "A Forest". A very good instrumental by them. Mind you the track "10:15 On a Saturday Night" is also a stand-out track by the Cure as many other's are. I know you are describing the Steve Wilson release of Progressive Sounds in UK Alternative Music. I am not sure why most people do not include Fad Gadget when talking about UK alternative music. I have the "Best of Fad Gadget" and there's not a bad track on it, plus its a double album. But I love what you show on your channel. Stay safe and go well.

That Dali's Car cover apparently uses the same Maxfield Parrish artwork as The Moody Blues 1983 album The Present-- though the Moody Blues album has the standing figure handing an "X" to the reclining figure I'm guessing to indicate their 10th album since Days of Future Passed.

Even though David Sylvian seems embarrassed about that inclination, there's absolutely no reason to be; as it's fantastic too...just in a very different way. I also enjoy the early post punk era Ultravox (w' John Foxx on vox). The musician friend, who I am dining with this evening, once drove John Foxx home after his own gig in London. JF proceeded to give my friend an impromptu historical music tour of London. Unlike JF, my friend (keyboard/synth player/composer) was born in London,.but is younger than JF, so enjoyed the unexpected treat. 👱♀️❤
I just checked out the artist & track listing of the Intrigue box set and have just seen that John Foxx is there with "Burning Car". I adore Ultravox "Astradyne" too. Midge Ure nailed it when I saw hin Melbourne in March 2020. It was my last gig before lockdown, as New.Order hsd cancelled their concert. BTW, I knew that my (late) husband was "the man for me" when I saw that he also owned a copy of The Associates "Sulk" album...amongst all the other vinyl down his hallway. 👱♀️❤
I bought the CD set (the vinyl was a bit rich for me). I dipped out in the eighties so don't have many LPs from that era. I've been playing it in the car for the last 2-3 weeks and enjoying it
just noticed that the trees on the echo album look like rabbit's ears!Would also recommend the biography of bill drummond (manager of the bunnymen and teardrop explodes)and the klf by john higgs which is a mind blowing read.There is a This Mortal Coil offshoot called hope blister who do a version of let the happiness in.
The Joy Division 12 inch singles had incredible sound. My favorite track of theirs is not a single though. Its "Passover" from Closer. Although "Heart and Soul" runs a close second. Post-Punk always interested me more than the original Punk genre.
i used to have the first few japan albums during their glam days..loved them..sadly got purged along the way..(ha)...also all my kate bush albums got sucked into that black hole..and yes, the dreaming is her best..hope you are doing well..i'm finally getting over my third bout of covid..stay well my friend..peace..rocky

Steven Wilson does a great podcast called The Album Years where he and Tim Bowness feature a year and they talk about what they feel are “important” releases from a variety of genres from that year. Fun and informative listen.
The breadth of your interests and enthusiasms put me to shame, Mazzy. Love hearing about these albums, without feeling the need to pursue them further. But applaud you for the diversity of your tastes.

Hey! Not many smiles on that comp. My god, that music is dour. Of course, there wasn't much to be happy about in 80s Britian. I don't think it's a coincidence the comp basically covers the Thatcherite years. She was in power 1979-1990. I like a lot of this music, but prolonged listening does cause me to shout, "Oh, for God's sake! Cheer up, you navel-gazing malcontent!", at my speakers.
Drums and Wires is my fave by XTC, but Complicate Game is my least favorite track. Their live act at the time was excellent. Saw them at the Stone in Broadway 1980.

And come on Norman, I can tolerate the American accent pronouncing your favourite group as “the Beadles” but pronouncing Peter Savile’s surname “Seville” just smacks of a lack of knowledge on the man, or indifference at best
