There is not enough room on the internet to post all of that... :) I have no idea how many I have even, I think my first was Kiss - The Originals, Mike Oldfield Boxed (4 channel mix though), Lol Creme and Kevin Godley - Consequences, of which I have 3 of since I took over my Brothers collections too... But that was only the beginning, I got all the Rush Box-sets they released so far, Kate Bush, the same, Ayreon I have a few. Some Dream Theater, All the Devin Townsend boxes... and it just goes on and on...

I usually stick to regular records and don’t buy box sets and the box sets I buy are usually singular albums. My favorite box set I own is the Once Twice Melody box set by Beach House, really stunning color vinyl in some absolutely beautiful packaging. One of the gems of my collection, it’s not even that rare I just love the packaging and vinyl color and of course the music contained in it so much.

My most recent one was the Lyceum box from the Dead. Four complete shows, across over 20 lps, hardcover book, all in a massive enclosure. The price tag reflects it all though. A little over 600 after tax and shipping. Worth every penny though. It’s sounds so incredible.

I was lucky enough to pick up both of ZZ Top’s “Cinco” box sets before Dusty Hills untimely passing last year. I got them both at about 80 a pop, and together they contain the first 10 albums. It was well worth it, and they sound great!

Vinyl is what records are made from, they are LP's, records, albums etc. Do you also collect clear polycarbonate plastic substrate, with a reflective metallic layer, and a clear protective coating of acrylic plastic ie cd's?

The last album box set I bought was The Beatles Blue Box BC13. But there were several CD box sets (The Rolling Stones Singles Collection - The London Years; one on Hank Williams, Jr.’s MGM years; the Lynyrd Skynyrd box from 1991) as well, and some 45 RPM box sets, too.

I have been buying vinyl for the past five years, and my record player setup is finally complete as of beginning of this year (2022). I am against buying box sets for the following reasons:
    - There are very few artists of whose discography I enjoy every single one of their albums. And of those few, I'd rather have a curated few albums. That way, I will actually be more likely to play and enjoy the records that I do own.
    - Box sets will fill up your available record shelf space much faster than buying selected records you know you will enjoy. And not everyone has tons of dedicated free record storage.
    - I am less likely to play a record from a box set because there is the added hassle of removing the specific record from the box, and putting it back. It's an added step compared to just plucking a record from the shelf. That box set is therefore more likely to collect dust in my case.
That said: the only instance where I could imagine buying a box set is if it was a very good curation/compilation of songs from different artists from a genre that's objectively obscure, like let's say Zamrock, Anatolian rock, old school afrobeat or old school cumbia. If the curation is fantastic, and if it is a genre I like, and would otherwise have trouble finding, I might consider buying the box set in that specific instance.

I only have 2 super deluxe vinyl box sets. One is Bowie's Station To Station, the other is Rush's 2112. Both have 180 gram LP pressings and CDs. The Bowie set also included an Audio DVD with 5.1 mixes.
In general I don't mind LP box sets. But to be honest, I think CDs are the better format for a box set.
The Tool box may seem a little pricey. But, do remember there are 5 LPs pressed at 180 grams. Add in the expense of packaging and it will come out to $180.00 very quickly. It's not so much of it being just one title, it's just the nature of the beast for a multi LP box.
I think the most unique idea for a vinyl box set was from Public Image Ltd. Their album "Metal Box" was 5 or 6 12" 45 RPM records in a metal film canister. In the USA it was released as a standard two LP set called Second Edition.

I rarely buy boxsets but the Tool one is amazing. Both the sound quality and the quality of the packaging was top notch. The prices are getting crazy and if I am spending a lot on a boxset I want quality rather than quantity because usually I won't like every album in the set.

@Vdx Xxy if they released one with Aenima in it I might actually consider it. But don't think I could do it for one album... They did just drop a "standard" edition. It's still $150 in AU lol, it will drop in price and stay in print like the "limited" lateralus LP hopefully and I'll get it one day, I already have opiate and undertow from years ago

I got the "Medieval Metal" box set from cult US Heavy Metal legends BROCAS HELM this year. It contains 4 LPs, the 3 studio albums and 1 live album. All on gold vinyl, exclusive to the box. It also came with a nice t-shirt, posters, badges, a keychain, a signed card and some other stuff. For like $100 (although the shipping to Northern Europe was quite steep), I am extremely happy to have it! Not something I'd buy every month, but for certain bands when it's a really nice presentation and the individual records are tough to find, I say yes!

my first boxset ever and probably one of the very first vinyl records that i got is “Awaken, My Love!” virtual boxset by Childish Gambino. never got the chance to download the app and experience the virtual reality concert but nonetheless, the sound from the records were crisp and pristine as they were pressed in heavyweight 180g vinyl. i also love how the cover glows in the dark! it is definitely one of my “grails!”

I was happy that Tool was releasing the newest album on vinyl but I have the same problem as you with the price. I just can't justify almost $200 for one album. Overall though I do own several box sets. Many are deluxe re-releases of albums with a bunch of extra stuff but I have some live box sets too like Bruce Springsteen's 75-85 5 LP set.

    • @SlinkiestTortoise23

You need to get an audio interface and an amplifier that has a record out for tape and put the line out of the amplifier into line level of the interface. You need an interface that has line level ins. There are many interfaces and if you see this and comment I can steer you in the right direction somewhat. Audacity software is free and that is sufficient to record WAVS (CD quality+) to a computer. Obviously, the quality of your turntable and cartridge is very important as all the surface noise etc is transferred, like for like to the computer recording. You can set the levels in the software etc just as you would were you recording to a tape cassette, hence, tape rec out on your amplifier. The amp is important as it can take the phono stage to line level to record. Hope that was helpful.

Box sets are cool if it's a band you're really into and/or if the contents are peak your interest i.e. RSD recently released a RAMONES box set that I was tempted to buy and I still may do it as have the contents I don't own and I like the overall packaging artwork and bonus contents (sticker sheet, rarities LP). The average price is actually a pretty good cuz the end result shows that you'd be paying like $25 - $30 per album, which ain't bad since most brand new albums are around that price. That said, I'm not usually willing to buy a box set unless I'm REALLY into the band or artist. I only have like 4 or 5:
·HÜSKER DÜ - "Savage Young Dü"
    ·CRASS - "Christ - The Album"
    ·OFF! - "First Four EPs"
    ·THE FLAMING LIPS - "Heady Nuggs..." (1 and 2)

The one box set I ever purchased was the TV Girl box set, got it for retail around $140 (tax and shipping included.) Came with four albums, four cassettes, sticker sheet, cool poster with some writing from Brad. I think the retail price is more dependent on the artist, and the popularity.

I just bought second hand but in NM condition the Queen Studio Discography box set.
    Not one single regret!
That's how you do vinyl box sets, beautiful packaging, great book, and the coloured vinyls look and sound great.
I intended to buy it on Amazon, I thought it was going to be there for a good while until I saved the money to get it but I was wrong and naive. So when I got the money, the box set was already more expensive anywhere else.
Tip: save for the vinyl box set and don't spend the money in anything else or the box will be gone.
I agree on the tool box set, it's ridiculous for just one single album.
I'm about to buy Lou Reed's box set, 6 original albums at $105.
    Ridiculous.
    Shame on Tool.

  • @eddiecarter9831

I haven't gotten into buying box sets, mainly because of the price. New vinyl is getting more expensive as it is. Used is getting ridiculous as well. I really enjoy finding a good used vinyl album on it's own. That might change, depending on the box set. As someone else pointed out, I prefer box sets in cd format as well. It's less hassle and takes up less space. I do, however, own a couple of box sets that I honestly forgot I had. One is a Time Life Christmas album that I really enjoy. The other is a box set of classical music that includes some history in the booklet. It simply opens from the top and has the records in paper sleeves inside, which I probably should replace at some point.

Here's a topic for your future forums. I had complained on another UA-cam site that just about all of the "reissues" that I am purchasing as of late are coming in with slight warps. Ben at The "In" Groove" explained that there is such a tremendous volume of LP's being pressed these days that they are not being stored properly as they are "curing" after pressing. A fellow answered my comments and said exactly what I was feeling: the compulsive need to press LP's at 180 and 200 grams is a huge waste of resources. Let me say, I have been collecting LPs for 45 years, the bulk of my collection garnered at garage sales in the decades of 80's. 90's and first decade of 2000 in SW Florida south of Tampa Bay. Almost all of my collection is near mint and NO WARPS. These LP's are not even close to 180 grams yet no warp problems. How come? This fellow that reflected on my comments said he thinks because of the heavier vinyl in the modern reissues, they are retaining their heat longer and therefore require extra time to cure which they are not being afforded.. He states: "a terrible waste of a limited resource." Any thoughts?

@@TBNTX Very interesting! 😀👍Yeah I looked it up on Discogs. I didn’t know what you meant by Audio Guide LP’s.
This content is intended to be the basis of a "do it yourself" radio program, with the original two discs'-worth of material from the 1979 box "The Alan Parsons Projects" (box cat# SP-68) being supplemented by new content covering the 1980 and 1982 albums. Although these three records are very similar to the two in the 1979 box, on this release they are easily distinguished by their 1982 copyright dates.

I have a handful of boxed sets and they are:
Tom Petty - Wildflowers 7 LP
    George Michael - Older Deluxe
Garth Brooks - Legacy (This one was a steal on Amazon for just $17 !!)
    George Michael - Faith
Bruce Springsteen - Collection Volume 2
    Bruce Springsteen Live 1975 - 1985
For me it has to make sense to buy it. Is it worth the money? Is it an album or set of albums I will listen to at least a couple of times a year? What kind of extras come with it? Personally I don't care about photos or reproduced backstage passes. I do like a book or booklet that includes information on how the album was made, stories about how songs were written and that sort of stuff.

Enigma - The Complete Studio Album Collection
Pink Floyd - The Early Years 1965-1972 (mostly optical discs but has the first singles on 7”)
    Warp20
    WXAXRXP30
I have a lot more CDs boxsets, which is the best deal all-around.
The TOOL Fear Inoculum didn’t surprise me too much and while I can understand the price tag being steep, you are paying for a very custom and high-quality package.
In general, if it’s an artist or a title I like, I will go for it if I can. But again, I find myself getting CDs as boxes instead of vinyl because of the price and immediate utility.

I like to get individual albums so I have time to listen to them. Maybe of a boxset was the only way to get reissues, and/or it represented a discount vs buying them individually...

Hello from England, another interesting video, thanks, i have mainly classical boxed sets from the 60's and 70's as that is how you got to hear long pieces like operas when they were too much for a gatefold double lp. I cant really comment on the modern ones cause they are too expensive. I bought a boxed set of Pablo Cassals playing Bachs Cello suites for £2, Im not gonna pay 20x that that for a modern pressing. I might dare pay £20 for a good Gregory Porter box set, its a shame new records is so much Nice new pressing of Jim Reeves Moonlight and Roses anyone????

The only artist I've got box sets for is Metallica. The deluxe remasters (which are treasure troves for hardcore Metallica fans), and the box sets for Hardwired to Self-Destruct and S&M2. Through the Never also comes in a box, but it's not really a box set in the traditional sense.

I tend to shy away from them. Hard to protect the albums properly with sleeves and whatnot, they take up a lot of space, theres very very few artists whose entire discography I'd want to own, and they come at a typically steep premium. Probably the only artist I can think of where I'd get a boxed set no questions asked is Tatsuro Yamashita, but mostly because his albums haven't been repressed and sell between $100-300 each - yikes.

One of my favorite box that says of course I am one of the biggest Beatles fans ever. I have the Abbey Road to SuperDeluxe on the vinyl and on CD, this is the first time I’ve ever bought vinyl box sets that had a bunch of outtakes on it and they sound really amazing and I bought it from Amazon which was great. I will always love box sets and as long as the sound quality is really good is the carpenters album any great sound quality the box that that you mentioned? I’m definitely very interested in getting that one. and the Fleetwood Mac album is really good the live album and I have another box that by Fleetwood Mac it’s a four CD box that called 25 years the chain and it’s a really great box that but one song that’s not available on it that should be on there is as long as you follow but it’s on they think the very best of Fleetwood Mac. and as long as people start buying boxes I think record companies will see that there was an interest in them and I hope that the box that the weather on the vinyl or CDs don’t buy out very soon.

  • @TheAngryRedBird

I currently own one box set, that being the Hamilton cast recording. I do however have 3 more on the way, the soundtracks for the games Persona 3, 4, and 5. Those are all a bit different though, since they are the only ways to get that music, and are very big albums, each pressed on 4LPs.
When I heard about the Tool box set, I kinda thought it was a bit wasteful, considering the PVC shortage and pressing plant backups. This album could have been pressed on 3LPs with an etching on side 6, cutting two whole LPs and likely the price a lot too. Don't get me wrong, the idea is cool, and it's not every day you get a Tool album, but that should not have been the only way to get Fear Innoculum.

Do you think vinyl is worth getting into as a teenager who has always collected CDs? What advantages does it have over CDs?

    • @MrDRock-rc2tz
      @MrDRock-rc2tz 2 роки тому +2

Your call dude.. if you like collecting cds keep doing it. It's quite a bit cheaper. I like vinyl and people will say the sounds better yadayada. What I really like about vinyl is the ritual of it all. It's just more of a experience to me and it's fun looking at the artwork and everything of the bigger covers. But again if you like cds just stick with that.

I used to have at least two sets given by my high school friend.
Most of them were Christian hymns (if I remember correctly, they were made by a Christian subsidiary of Island Records) or motion picture soundtracks (like The Wizard of Oz, Shrek, and one of the "That's Entertainment" records).
I lost them while I was moving from house to house. It makes me sad... orz

The only Boxset I have is Harry Styles Fine Album and honestly I’m very disappointed with it, I got it cause I wanted to Compete my Fine Line Collection as I’m huge Harry fan I wished he did more with it as the only thing with it is a booklet of photos of the LA show of the day Fine Line the album was released, some gloves to hold the lithograph photos of himself from the photoshot of the album, and standard 180 gram black vinyl. Hoped he did a picture disc or colored vinyl for the Boxset but he missed the opportunity :( I’m also debating if I Should get the Sade Boxset or buy the albums separately on discogs
