Step Uncle, I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years plus and watched/read countless lessons on how to unlock the fretboard. And this exercise just did it for me. We are not worthy!!! Thank you!!! 🙌🙌🙌🤘
Hey uncle Ben.great video for tapping begginers! Most of us guitarists tried in some way to start at it, but no method, only trial and error. Your video shows in a simple way, how to get great sounding ideas from the start! Thank you for the efforts and patience, always good info in your videos! Keep up the good work!
I taught myself how to play guitar, and this technique is what I do all over the fretboard. I don't have the longest fingers and so some of the stretches I couldn't make comfortably. This technique solved that problem. Thanks Ben for showcasing this. It makes me feel better that I didn't figure things out the wrong way. You rule!
Ha! I was about to say the same exact thing--looks so effortless, as opposed to my frustrated angry face (which is good if you want to look metal-angry, but come on!). Good luck!
Thank you for the lesson! I think I can fix a lot of my playing mistakes now! I am glad I found your channel and finally learn a lot of useful tricks and techniques! You are one of my favorite youtube guitar teachers!
Hey cool. Thank you, great video. I can tell this is one of those lessons you won’t stop till you get it. On a side note, who would dislike this video?
Thanks Ben. I've never been able to master alternate picking (at least to the extent of playing blindingly fast runs like the one in the video. But you've made it possible. You're the man my friend.
Always get a word phrase gem from Uncle Ben with great guitar lessons... today's favorite started at..." lack of skill and laziness..."...! Thanks, and Rock On! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I learned a lot from this! I stopped at about 4:58 as I realized, I do not know my three note per string scales. I was taught the "legacy" modes. So I quit... Then I pulled up a reference and found three note per scales and practiced those. I learned they're not too hard because I learned chunking! I also learned, a guitar not played often has a higher likelihood of breaking strings. I learned that the quarter power mode of my 5150LBX is not really 1/4. I learned my DSL 15 + JHS AT_ KICKS ASS. I learned I probably need another Suhr. Above all, I HAD FUN!!!!
@@ericwhite2830 Winger took a lot of isht. Some of it deserved - but no one ever questioned their musicianship. As a 19 year old with a 17 year old girlfriend (of 4 years) at the time, “She’s only 17!” was wink, wink, nudge, nudge humor. As a 50 year old dad it’s squicky and uncomfortable. I’ve often wished they could re-record it with updated lyrics, sans the cheese factor. It’s that cool a song otherwise.
Coincidentally, I have been playing around with tapping ideas like this lately! I’ll definitely be using this in the future! Thanks, Uncle Ben for a great lesson!!
Really like this. One thing I need to get used to though, is my left hand is still expecting to play the third note with my pinky. So on the "wider" patterns (eg 5-7-9 on the E string), my left hand is still reaching around(!) getting into the position ready to stretch for the 9th fret with my pinky, only for my tapping finger to say "don't worry pinky....I got this note!" Great exercise pattern to pick as well. Cheers
Ben you’re on the Modern Terra today!! There’s one in the same colour in my local guitar store and I’m soooooo tempted, the neck is made of butter, played it a couple of times and I’m 99.9% sold, only problem is I need to trade in 2/3 of my other guitars to buy it 🥲.
Avoid using the pinkie? Heresy. Great video as usual. Regarding Paul Gilbert, I legit believe his hands do offer an advantage. They are, some of the biggest hands I've ever seen. Ha ha ha. That's really important about learning root note locations across the fretboard too. Ol'Steven Vai had an old lesson going through a bunch years ago. It was great.
tbh, i`ve been feeling really uninspired after EVH passed. im not even sure as to why, just kinda bummed out from guitar stuff. this video really helped to rekindle that inspiration. def gonna put a lot of practice into this style, thx uncle ben! cheers from Brazil :)
@@BenEller Thank you. Definitely a great shredding scale. I have watched you for a long while now and have learned a lot. Currently working on Weekend Wankshop 200.
Really cool video Ben. I always get super inspired from your videos. I have a couple questions though 1. Have you thought about doing this with pentatonic scale shapes and patterns? So like playing F# A and tapping B on the E string to B C# tap E on the A to E F# tap A on the D string, and then restarting the pattern on the A through G strings and continuing it through the whole pentatonic scale? 2. I recently injured my left hand and can't play guitar right now. Is there anything I can do to improve my ear since I can't learn songs? And do you think it would be beneficial to do picking exercises on just an open string or with a capo to build up my right hand speed? Thanks for all the awesome videos, looking forward to the next slice of fried gold!
Kinda surprised Michael Romeo from Symphony X has yet to be mentioned. Awesome tapper, and he mutes his strings pretty much the same way as you show here.
Hi uncle Ben, been playing guitar for 2 years, picked it up quite fast for a 63 year old, can play most stuff apart from shredding, do you think it’s too late at my age, I’ve tried really hard but no improvement, thanks
After years of playing I found treating speed as a tool in the toolbelt and not the destination helped me focus on playing well and then develop those bursts of speed. As with everything else, start at the beginning and you'll get there. The notes you don't play are just as important as the ones you do play. All the best from the Bay Area. MK
Check out Kristian Niemann’s work for Therion, Demonoid and Sorcerrer for some mad tapping solos. For example, Wargods by Demonoid or Voyage of Gjurdieff by Therion.
I've noticed that nearly ALL major shredders have a long or longer than usual fingers, especially the pinky finger (look at Ola Englund's). This undoubtedly allows them the dexterity to more easily play across the fretboard. I had a friend that was a really good guitar player. I tried doing some of the stuff he was doing, and although I'm as accomplished as he was, it was just damn difficult for me, where for him it was easy. Then I asked him to put his left hand up against mine and my suspicions were correct. ALL of his fingers were about a quarter to a half inch longer than mine. Then I wondered if they make a guitar neck where the distance between the fret wire is closer together. I don't mean a cheap child's guitar. But instead of a regular neck of 25.5 inches, how about a 23.5 inch neck? And, why yes, they do! Since I can't grow my hands larger, I can shrink the neck. So, if you're like me and don't have long fingers, get a smaller scale neck. You'll be amazed at how much EASIER it is to shred. Then you won't suck - at least not at guitar.
I haven't done a ton of tapping. Unlike many, my hands are relatively large and allow me to comfortably grip an 8 string with that powerthumb over the top like the hethan I am. Good lick. Thanks for the lesson and breaking me out of my comfort zone
Ok what's going on this week. Paul Davids uploads Open D video ...Rhett uploads Open D Video. Robert Baker uploads EVH video ... Ben uploads EVH video .
Is it just me? MAN I hear that run in A Major. Especially Step Dad speed, I REALLY wanted you to slide that tapped note UP at the end to 17 (A). I know they are A-Tonal scales (F#m and AMaj), somewhere in the middle my ear grabbed that A Tonal center and wouldn't let go
Listen to the harmony of what it’s being played over, that F#minor bass riff. If it was being played over AM, it would definitely take on a different tone!
Aside from EVH, I’d argue the best tapper I’ve ever seen is Christian Münzner from Necrophagist, Obscura and other bands. His technique was developed due to a medical condition he has that prevents him from doing a lot of standard shred techniques Very easily.
Why did you present this as a question, as if there is really some existential significance to living after EVH has died? Exclamation would have worked better.
Thanks for learning these 3 note per string tapping concepts! Who is your favorite tapper?
Joe Duplantier
Chris arp from psyopus and assjack. Dude is shred.
Angel Vivaldi has some of the sickest tapping runs and leads, IMO.
EVH
Vito
Another amazing lesson, thank you Uncle Ben

Reb Beach’s proximity tapping stood out among a sea of other tappers. Similar to what you’re demonstrating.

Immediately hearing this, I thought of Reb's runs in the song Seventeen.
Absolutely. Seventeen is a cheesy song but that tapping run in the solo gives me chills every time

Tony MacAlpine was the first person I remember see using the technique - to absolutely devastating effect!
Definitely Vito Bratta ( White Lion ) Reb Beach ( Winger) And of course Steve Lynch ( Autograph) 3 Awesome Tappers and shredders for sure !!!!!!!
Early Nuno Bettencourt tapping is pretty hard to beat.

I just watched a biography on Van Halen today at work! I had no idea his dad played on his record.
They had to work to convince him as he'd given up playing publicly after losing finger(s).
