Thanks for the time save! After watching this I started with trying to loosen the pitman arm. It wouldn't budge so I ordered a new one with the steering box.
That’s exactly what I did! Lol the Pitman arm is installed with a ton of torque. I believe over 100.

No problem man!🤙 I’m glad I can help you out. That sucks, but it’s not too bad of a fix. Also, you are right. You need to put ATF Mercon V in there’s older power steering pumps or they will make noise. Good luck man!
@@TheMinuteMasters mine still makes noise regardless. Remanufactured power steering pump from NAPA... And yeah, 85 F150 calls for ATF.
I'm having a ton of trouble getting the pitman arm off as well.
@@kellenstuart4698 Really? I made the mistake of putting power steering in mine. So mine has always made noise. But I’ve always been told I synthetic ATF does the trick.
I couldn’t get my Pitman arm off the original steering box. So I bought a new one.
@@TheMinuteMasters So... my issue could be because I accidentally filled the new power steering pump with the wrong fluid, bled it, then refilled it with ATF (after realizing it was wrong). It makes noise now. That might be it :\
@@kellenstuart4698 That could have caused the problem. I would try bleeding the pump a few times and see if that does the trick.
Thanks for another great video. I also had a lot of play in my steering wheel. Was a little scary at times on the highway. I started out by swapping out the shaft with the same one you used to no avail. I just swapped out the steering gearbox and it steers like a dream. Steering wheel is just a hair off-center but I can live with that for now. Also, I’m curious as to what method you used to remove the drag link from the pitman arm?After doing some research I learned what a pickle fork is. Lol ripped the boot as expected but I plan on eventually swapping it out as well. Thanks again man! You’re a lifesaver for someone who’s trying to learn the ropes like myself!
Nice! I’m glad you got that all fixed. You can index (unhook the steering shaft and install it a few notches clockwise or counterclockwise) to get your steering wheel straight.
I can’t remember what I used. I think I used a pitman arm puller. Although a pickle fork is good too.

The pitman arm nut is 33mm or 1 5/16" socket.

After lots of trial and error, and a broken pitman arm removal tool, I finally found the secret. You need to put the removal tool under lots and lots of tension, like flexing the tool and hooking a wrench on your wrench for extra leverage. Then take your Torch and apply heat directly to it, until it’s very hot. Then take a tea candle and melt it so it goes into the splines and it will be the best penetrating liquid ever. Then hit it aggressively with a heavy hammer. It falls right off

Did you put in a new power steering fluid reservoir? Some videos I seen said I needed to?? You make it look easy but that’s the magic of editing
No I didn’t. I kept the existing power steering pump and reservoir. When you replace the steering gearbox it’s a separate piece from the pump and the reservoir.

Your videos have been so helpful getting my truck back in shape. I'm just finishing up replacing the gearbox and PS pump and am running into a problem. My new pitman arm won't reconnect from the shaft on the gear box to the drag link. Everything is stock, but it's almost like the pitman arm is an inch too short after reinstalling everything.
Reconnecting the pitman arm is literally the last thing I need to do to get this truck on the road again. Any ideas? Maybe adjust the sleeves on the tie rod ends to move the center link closer to the gear box shaft?

Interested, you aren’t installing anything aftermarket correct?
If everything is stock and all the lengths match what you replaced, then I would try adjusting the tie rod length. I don’t see why it wouldn’t line up.
Bro I'm in this horrible situation where I can't get the pitman off and it looks like I have to just replace the gearbox regardless. It's been long evening and you have really helped me out! What year is your f150? Mine is an 03 I wonder if it's the same method as most ford trucks.
Damn that sucks man. Those pitman arms are a PITA to get off. Luckily I was replacing my gear box. Mine is a 95. To the best of my knowledge, the replacement procedure should be the same. I’m glad I could help you out man!🤙
Your not suppose to use the puller 100% to pull the pitman arm. The correct method to remove it is to put pressure on the pitman arm with the puller then you smack the back side of it with a heavy hammer then you apply more pressure with the puller and so on and so on until the arm pops off.

i put pressure on the pitman arm with the pitman arm puller, and then warmed just the end of the pitman arm where the splines are using a propane torch for 5 minutes, then a gentle trigger squeeze on the impact wrench to tighten the pitman arm puller one more time, and shazam! it fell right off easy.
Looking at Minute Masters' f150, his truck looks like it has a bit more rust than mine (also a Pennsylvania truck). Rust is evil and just welds things together here in Pennsylvania.

Never heat steering components. If you're gonna replace the gearbox, replace the pitman arm.
That was my feeling too. I bought a new steering box and pitman arm.

how did you disconnect the pitman arm from the draglink, what did you do?
I used a tire rod end puller. A small pitman arm puller works too.

You’re welcome! The drag link did come off the pitman arm easy and really anytime I’ve removed it. I had to use a puller though.

Question? How do I get rid of blow by?
I thought I had a cracked head because oil is getting into my coolant, but my neighbor read my compression sheet, & said I have too strong of compression for it to be a cracked head or head gasket.
He is a master mechanic, so I believe him.
I was willing to pay him to fix the head or head gasket, & he doesn't turn down money, but he is pretty honest with me, for the most part.
He came to the conclusion that it's blow by.
Drives me crazy, cuz it smokes, & my new radiator changes from fresh looking coolant to brown oily looking coolant, after driving.
Any suggestion on getting rid of blow by?
I have a 1990 Ford F-150.

Dee 1 So “blow by” usually refers to oil blowing by worn piston rings. But I see what you are getting at. Your head gasket could be tight and provide a good deal around the pistons, but have leaks between coolant passages and oil passages. I don’t believe you can leak oil into the water pump but that could be an issue too. Is the smoke from over heating or is the smoke from the exhaust?
Maybe you could put some ENGINE RESTORE in your engine oil, it will block the gaps from worn piston rings and prevent blow by and oil burning to an extent.

Thanks for the video. How important is keeping all the teeth of the gears aligned? Would a simple alignment be fine or should I be extra careful to keep everything straight?
BLUEFEATHEREDOLIVES So the fear box comes in the straight forward position. When you put your truck up on jack stands make sure the steering wheel is straight and your wheels are pointed straight. The Haynes manual advises running the seat belt through the steering wheel to hold it in place. My steering wheel locked in place and was pretty straight. So all I had to do was bolt the new box up and turn the upper gear a tad to get the steering coupler to lines up. That was it!

Put your old steering box (pitman arm part ) into a bath of atf (new or used dont matter) overnight if you want a spare

Did you try taking the slack out of the old box first?
gregory9740 What do you mean? Like raise the wheels off the ground and make sure the steering wasn’t under tension when I straightened it?
@@TheMinuteMasters No, that one jam nut on top with a slotted bolt, you loosen the nut and turn the slotted bolt clockwise 1/8 turn at a time, adjust it till most the play is taken out of the wheel. You have to drive each time to check the slack in the wheel, dont over adjust it or then you'll ruin the gear box.
gregory9740 Oh right! I know what you are talking about. It tightens the gear box. I didn’t touch it actually. The steering feels great now and the inspector found it satisfactory when I took it back for the final inspection.
Now my friend. why don't you tell us how to get that steering coupler back on. once its aligned, you have to pry gently in order to get that bitch back on, and thank you for the video you did a good job on it.
By steering coupler do you mean the section of the drag link steering that bolts to the pitman arm?

what led you to replace the steering box? just leaking fluid from the bottom? if so, how much were you losing before you took the plunge to replace it?
When I lived in Pennsylvania, they had yearly vehicle inspection. I was told the tolerances within the gear of my steering box were out of spec.

I'm fairly new to this, I wanna buy a 96 f150 from my friend everything is fine except he says the steering rack but all the videos I find explain a steering box so do 96 f150s have steering box and not steering rack? I'd thats true then does it mean that steering rack and box can't be on the same vehicle?
A 1995 F150 definitely has a drag link steering. He probably says steering rack because the majority of vehicles on the road today have rack and Pinion steering.
Did you have to replace the O rings in the return hoses going to the steering pump? Or did you just use the old ones back?
That’s a good question. I don’t remember replacing any O-rings.

Thanks man!🤙 The new steering box did tighten up the steering quite a bit but I still have some play. However, my tire rod ends are about due for replacement and I’m actually thinking of replacing the steering column shaft with a Borgeson. Supposedly that helps a lot.

How did you bend the power steering line? been trying to put it on for hours and it won’t thread at all.

1995 Ford F-150 whiney power steering. 300 4.9 lt. Replace hydraulic lines, steering box, pulley, tensor pully, serpentine belt, and have tried 4 remanufactured power steering pumps. I bought a vacuum bleeder kit for my pump. Cannot get whining out of steering. I use type F atf per my manual. I am just trying to find someone with answers. Thanks for any reply.
Supposedly Mercon V ATF should stop the power steering Whitney, but I don’t know how often that works. Most guys do a Saginaw power steering pump conversion. The Saginaw pumps are from Ford vans. They don’t whine and I think have more power.
Great video. I’m having trouble getting the steering shaft back onto the gear box. Do you have any tips for that. The joint from the shaft is all the way closed so it’s too tight to fit over the steering box. Thanks
Thanks man!🤙 I would check both ends where the shafts come together to make sure they are the same size and shape. The shaft should be square but it could be rectangular or worn irregularly.
Did you figure it out? I am having the same issue. The steering box splines are keyed (there's a flat side). I'm not sure on the steering shaft where the flat side line up, but I think perhaps on the side where the pinch bolt goes. One thing for sure, if you are like me and you like to leave bolts where they belong so you don't lose them, the pinch bolt definitely has to be out when you try to slide it in or it won't go.
@@ericaweaver2203 I haven’t had a chance to look at mine. Honestly, I might swap the steering shelf for the Borgeson one. After 235k miles, I think there is a lot of slop in the steering shaft.
You’re steering box may not be lined up. Which is why the flat spots for the key aren’t lining up.
How did you disconnect your pitman arm from the drag link? Mine is frozen up.
A standard pitman arm puller should do the trick. You can also heat it up and see if that helps. Definitely hit it with some PB Blaster.
I ended up using my handy dandy grinder and chopped that stubborn thing up haha

What's the reason that you replaced the steering box? Power steering leak?
It was flagged as loose and out of spec during Pennsylvania vehicle inspection. I had to replace it to pass.

Im about to put on a box that was newly rebuilt and put on another then the other truck was wrecked. My question is. How do i make sure the steering box is centered and not turned further one way or the other? Im guessing just count the turns and meet in the middle then connect the pitman arm before i connect the steering shaft so that if its a little off i can turn it where it needs to be to get the pitman arm connected.
That’s a good question. When I removed my steering gear box, I had the wheels pointing straightforward with the steering wheel centered as well. Otherwise, you probably do have the count the turns and figure it out that way.

So the bolt for the steering linkage after you slip off the plastic going to the gear box my bolt is under the truck when I feel it should be on the top idk I’m apprehensive to continue working on the truck
Gotcha. Can you reach the bolt or turn your steering wheel to click the bolt to an easier to reach position?
@@TheMinuteMasters I got the shaft bolt off been really cold lately here I’m just having a hard time getting to the power steering lines to get them disconnected. I hear 14mm other sources say 18mm line wrench..
@@outcasted1991 that’s good! Yeah sometimes the power steering lines can be a bit tricky to get to. I can’t remember what size wrench get the closest match.
@@TheMinuteMasters the flare wrench is a 16mm found out the hard way got one off working on the other these lines aren’t no joke 😩
can u tell us what socket to use to remove the two lines also the shaft off the the box
Good question. I don’t know off the top of my head. The lines were standard sizes below 1”. So if you have a wrench set you should be good.
The factory steering shaft is held in place via a set screw/bolt. I think that’s another small wrench size, maybe 3/8”.
On my truck the 2 bolts on the box don't seal the box. Steering wheel is really stiff and hard to turn

Does the steering gear box make the steering wheel return back to the center?
If you want your steering wheel to be centered then you have to adjust your tie rod ends. If you want you wheels to be biased towards driving forward then you need more castor. A new steering box took some slop out of the steering.

I'm trying to find out why my ford f350 steering wheel keeps on getting the death wobble when I turn only when I turn
Like turning at high speeds? Death wobble is normally at speed 40+ mph.

I don’t remember exactly but 17mm doesn’t sound too far off.
I had to put my gearbox in a 12 ton press to release it. It was a pitta to do. If you ever lose track of where the pitman arm goes back on the sector shaft. Simple rotate steering wheel all the way left then count how many turn all the way to the right than divide by what ever that number is that's your center. Put the pitman arm on and make any final adjustments with the steering coupler

Gabriel Pla Honestly it really isn’t that difficult but the E150s are a little more cramped in the engine bay than an F150. You’ll be fine though. Get another pitman arm just in case.

I learned to drive in a 96 E250!🤙 Adjusting the screw on the top tightens the steering (makes the steering wheel more stiff to turn) But only tighten it a 1/16 or so at a time. Too tight and you will break your steering box. Really? That’s awesome!!🤙
WHY wont the steering rod come off coming from the steering wheel i took the bolt out but it wont budge prybars heat air hammer nothing works

I am having a problem . To lock steering wheel its not straight also i have wheels slight to left to get ahold of the bolt because it was sideways to separate shafts. I am hoping this doesnt mess up steering. You didnt seem to be to concerned where as in other videos guys were saying to tie off steering wheel and make sure its straight and locked .
So I didn’t lock the steering wheel because I disconnected the steering shaft right away. I also didn’t turn the shaft during the removal process. The new steering box came propositioned at center. The pitman arm only attaches to the splines one way. So I new that would go on straight. So with the steering wheel and shaft disconnected, I knew I could move everything else and still get it all back to center.

Mike Walker So once you install your new steering box and attach the pitman arm, you will end up pulling your wheels straight when you install the one drag bar on the pitman arm. Then attach the steering column. If your steering wheel and wheels aren’t aligned, then you can make the adjustments then. Honestly, everything is somewhat self centering. Steering box and attach pitman is centered. The steering column can only attach to the steering box one way. No problem man!🤙

This is a little bit off subject, but I need your help on an oil leak issue I'm having.
I took my 1990 F150 out for a spin yesterday, got it up to about 80 miles per hour for around 5 miles.
It started smoking like crazy, because oil was shooting all over the place from the passenger side..
I get back & look under the truck, & oil covers the frame from front to back..
Looks like I ran through a oil puddle or something.
What do you think this may be?
I've put in new valve covers & valve cover gaskets already, & a new upper intake gasket...
Not sure what the issue is, it runs strong, but oil is all over the place..
After the drive, it had a weak start.
Last time I had it at a shop, my mechanic did a combustion check, & said my number 2 spark plug had alot of oil on it, but it was no big deal, that I probably just needed to put it on the road, & blow it out really good.
Well I did, & it gave my truck an oil bath, & the ppl behind me a cloud of smoke..
Have any idea what's goin on?

Dee 1 If you valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets are new then oil can be leaking down from there. I think you might have a blown head gasket. A blown head gasket would leak oil into the cylinder chamber and coat the spark plug. Do another compression check and see if any other cylinders are bad. Then check your oil. If it looks milky in color then it has anti-freeze in it. That is also a sign of a blown head gasket.
Without being able to look at your truck, I’m trying to figure out how oil would drip onto your headers and cause the smoke. Or one of your cylinders is brining oil like crazy and is able to leak out through a spark plug. Turn the engine on, and open the hood. While observing the side of the engine with the bad plug, move the throttle cable with your hand. You might just see oil coming from the head gasket or around that spark plug. Try that, and let me know what you see.

@@TheMinuteMasters Well, it seems my power steering reservoir was lose, & the fluid splurge came there, it is empty, of course..
The bad news, is I still think you are right, I started it up, gave it throttle, I had noticed coolant had leaked as well, & my radiator was low, & it's new, with a new water pump, thermostat, etc.
Well, the water that came out of my brand new radiator is dark brown, black..
I assume it's full of oil...double ugh..!!!
There goes my plans for a new sound system this summer..
I assume I have a cracked head, & will need a rebuilt engine..
How much do u think that will cost, parts & labor?
I live in Austin Texas, so prices here aint cheap..
I'm guessin $3,000.00 or a lil more...dang man!

Dee 1 Yeah you definitely have some major leaking issues in your engine. If you want to keep everything cheap. Try to find a junkyard engine. The next level in price would become a remanufactured engine. The highest price is always having your engine rebuild. I’d just try and shop around. I had my transmission rebuild the first time for $2900. When I failed I found a place selling transmissions for $1600 with 5 year warranties. Shopping is important.
Ahh, man you’re lucky you have the pump just to the side so you can get to the top of the box. My steering box is fine/works great but is leaking like mad. The truck has 217k on it & if I’m gonna change the box the pump has to come out anyways, so it’s gonna get a new pump, & maybe a new hose. I’ve got to replace my Tie rods as well so I’ll either just yank em off, & try to get em right.
Yup! It’s a nice set up. What engine do you have? Yeah definitely replace both. You will appreciate the huge difference in steering quality.

Dalsa Mamea Nope your good! 🤙 The pitman arm is install with like 200 ft lb of torque. So even without the nut, it should stay on until you retighten it.
So it would be the seals in side? Cuz I put in fluid and an start my truck an it leaks all my fluid from the gear box an my PS starting whining pleas tell me that’s the problem lol
Dalsa Mamea Yeah, if it’s leaking the seals are bad. Is it the original power steering box? If it’s original, it’s probably due. As for the whining, these pumps are notorious for having a low whining noise. If your whining noise decreases when you add fluid then you leak is bad.

Dalsa Mamea No problem! Yup! It’s funny how we all can forget how old these trucks are because they run and still look good. So I try not to be surprised when something needs to be replaced and it’s original.
Mine is a 1978 pickup and the box weighs 46 pounds.I first rebuilt the box twenty sum years back. Had to do it again now but. Any one got an idea how to get it back in if you no longer have the strength to lift it back into place. My shoulder no longer have what it takes. I have no help.

I would use a strap to hold the steering box in place as you bolt it back. Kind of crane the steering box into the engine bay and up against the frame rail.

Good question! I haven’t done one on an 02 but I can’t imagine it would be any different. I’d try to compare your steering set up to mine. They should have all the same basic parts.

How does it steer with a brand new gear box?
Jakestarr1723 Night and day! Before it was loose and the steering wheel had a lot of play. Now it’s stiff and firm. On the highway it’s stiff enough to drive confidently at high speeds. Before, i was constantly steering the truck and if I went over a bump or bridge transition, it felt like I would steer out of control. It really is amazing! I never thought I would feel this much improvement I driving but it is just out of this world awesome now!
did this fix the slack in the steering?
Yes, this fixed some of the slack. The rest was taken care of with a new Borgeson steering shaft. Just make sure your tie rods and ball joints are in good condition.

I got a 1994 Ford bronco xlt 5.8 that vibrates and pulls to the left alittle Everytime I come to a complete stop I've changed rottors calipers brake lines ,brake master cylinder and booster still pulls 😑
You’ve changed the pads too right? You definitely have a brake issue but you’ve covered everything. Try bleeding the brakes again and see if that helps. You could have air in the lines.
How much would this cost to fix at a shop?
That’s a good question. The steering box cost around $130 and $40 for the pitman arm. Auto shops charge between $60-$90 per hour. I can’t imagine this repair taking more than 2 hours in a shop. So, parts, labor, fluid, and some O&P, probably around $300.

I replaced mine too much play and I just got a new pitman arm it was a simple job just a little cussing at it and it came right off
Yup! Definitely a simple job and some cussing was involved trying to get the pitman arm off initially. Lol
My 96 drives straight wheel sits straight but has probably 4-5 inches of play before the wheels actually move when turning the wheel
If all of your steering components are old/from the previous owner, I would replace them. I would start with replacing your ball joints and tire rod ends. Then you can turn your attention to the steering box and finally steering shaft.

I'd like to completely replace the whole front suspension just waiting for some more funds right now it runs 100% great looking truck interior is spotless I constantly get compliments and people trying to buy it like 2-3 times a week But needs some front suspension work
