  • Our day 7 (June 6) on the GDMBR, Pie Town to Grants (74 miles) surprised us again with incredible views in the El Malpais National Monument.
    We left our ‘cycling family’ after a relaxed breakfast in the Toaster house in Pie Town and headed to Grants. The first 30 miles of gravel through the wide desert plains were so cool - endless views, flowers, ground dogs and wild donkeys!
    When we hit pavement for the remaining 44 miles we reaaaally appreciated the smooth ride! It’s been a while since we had been on smooth roads 😂
    Riding though El Malpais National Monument was mind blowing! Incredible views of the badlands, rock formations, arches and bluffs for miles on end! We took a few small detours to see La Ventana arch and the lookout from the Bluffs and loved it! So worth the few extra miles!
    Getting into Grants we met up with Zach and Asa for dinner! What a perfect day!

    My wife is now hooked for accompanying me this June. Where did you stay in Grants? All the hotels look sketchy.

      🤩 That’s amazing! This is a really bonding experience. Always need need to watch out for each other when doing this together. In Grants we stayed in the Holiday Inn Express, bought food at Walmart and had a vegan burger at Denny’s 😜

    I was just about to comment on the lack of vehicles seen in your previous videos, then a bunch of cars pass when you stopped on the highway. Were there many vehicles on the dirt roads? Love these videos!

      Thanks Peter 😃 On the dirt roads we rarely or never encountered vehicles. Depends on section as well. I think there was one truck passing us when we head up on the gravel from Pie Town, amazing experience riding through these vast landscapes. Roads is of course a different game. Does this help?

    Another great little film guys, most people, of course, travel north to south and by the time they get to that part of NM they have stoped filming or there is very little footage at best and so the small details you show like the TLC ranch for water are so useful. I have a question: you talk about the importance of tyre clearance and then refer to issues in Cuba: how did you know that when you hadn't yet reached Cuba? There is probably a very simple answer but hey ho. Thank you again for taking the trouble to share this with us.

      Thanks Lee! Great question, and yes my comment was a little confusing in this context. I meant Cuba 🇨🇺, the country. We crossed Cuba with our bikes as well. I started only the first days with videos. We had several crazy peanut butter mud experiences there, that stretched our physical limits of carrying our loaded bikes ;)

    Nice! Did you carry 8l or 16l of water, didnt quite understand from the video? 😅 I'm planning my tour this summer and your videos are a great help!

    • @MarionandFred
      @MarionandFred  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Otso! Depending on the riding day we each would carry different loads of water. We each carried a 4 liter MSR bladder (which you can fold up really small), we had 2 bottles on the front fork (2 liter), and I would carry one bottle in snack bag that I would then refill on the road. Sometimes we even strapped another bottle on the Ortlieb accessory bag in our setup. If you go northbound and climb up from Lake Roberts take a lot of water with you ;) from the campground!
