    Great explanatory video of a common issue.
    Since the barely noticeable tightening of the clip (luckily able to put a socket on it) and half a litre of coolant poured into the radiator, despite the expansion bottle being half full. The leak has stopped 🥳🎉
    Thank you 👍

      Thank you! I’m glad it worked. Those first few days are a bit nervy aren’t they? Hopefully both bikes will remain dry and cool for the rest of their days. Cheers for reminding me, it might help someone else 👍

    I saw a video this morning where a colleague in an R commented that he tightened that clamp a full turn. I understand that it's not tightened with the right torque at the factory. Something to bear in mind, the bad thing is the bad position and the difficulty to do it, he did it with a very long screwdriver, difficult to find.
    Thank you for detailing the steps to look at the level of the radiator in the cap 😃

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, as I said in the video, it is very common. How you tighten it depends on the orientation of the clip. Some use flexible sockets, or screw drivers etc. If I was buying the bike again I'd ask the dealer to torque it before buying 👍

    I have a 2019 and I've been smelling something sweet and seeing a bit of steam at start-up. Going to check this today. Thanks for the video.

      Yes that is the smell. Mine was loose at the radiator hose clip at top of engine. Took a turn or so to nip it up. No problem after that. Remember to top up the radiator, as well as the expansion bottle. 👍

      @@CodgerBiker Very good intel!!! I'm bringing the bike to the UK and Europe this summer (ABR festival etc) so this is key prior to leaving Canada :)

      I reckon who ever tightens that clamp at the factory needs firing. Very common issue. Enjoy the festival 👍

    Just discovered your channel. Your films are good source of research for me as I hope to pick up my new 790s next month. Useful to know about these things but hasn’t put me off as I loved the bike. Keep up the good work. 👍😁👏

    It's a shame KTM have switched to the worm-drive (Jubilee) hose clamps. The spring type are far better as they provide even pressure all the way around the hose.

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  3 роки тому

      To be fair they work fine - IF tightened up! 😁

    • @RedRupert64
      @RedRupert64 3 роки тому +1

      @@CodgerBiker That's one of the good points of the spring type; they only need to be fitted - they can't be not tight enough (providing they're the correct size in the first place).

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  3 роки тому

      I wonder what they will use on the 890 Adv, given the widespread water leak caused by this?.

      @@CodgerBiker A friend's 950 came back from a KTM workshop with dripping rad hose connections. They'd used Jubilee-type clips in place of the OE spring clips when reinstalling the radiator. It can be difficult to get the tension exactly right as the stubs on aluminium rads tend to be fragile. The Japanese usually use Jubilee-style clips on their reliable bikes. The choice must be down to the cost of the clips, as the spring clips are quicker and easier to install correctly.

    Wee tip Codger for checking the expansion tank level...shine a touch through the slit on the side panel and then look at the level slit in the cowling...lights up all nice and pink...easier to see in the dark and when the bike's level ;>

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  4 роки тому +2

      Aye that'll work. But expansion bottle stays full if radiator leaks so you still have to check the radiator from time to time 👍

      Hello. If you don't want to use the navigation app, from KTM, on your phone, I'd go for a Garmin Zumo XT. I use a TomTom Rider 550, but it is quite old now. 👍👍

    Codger, did you just tighten the stock hose clamp or did you replace it with something else? I assume leak stopped?

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  2 роки тому +1

      Morning! I'd just tightened the hose clamp already on the bike. It seemed many people had same issue. Important, afterwards to check radiator is full (not just expansion bottle) 👍

      @@CodgerBiker I've tightened it a few times. No leak for 2-3K miles. But then leak again. I am pretty sure these conventional worm style hose clamps vibrate loose and / or with constant change in temperature. I plan to keep a closer eye on it. I can reach the slotted head screw on the clamp with a 6mm. socket and T handle extension. This time, the slotted screw had rotated some much, I had to pry it into position with screwdriver. Someday I hope to have dealer put some constant tension Samco or OETIKER clamps. Thanks for all your excellent videos. Kam

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Kam 👍 There were reports of a rare failure in the thermostat housing, but it would probably leak all the time if it was that. Mine stayed dry after tightening. As you say it is awkward to reach, especially if the adjuster slips round. The dealers must have a lot of experience with this issue. You may have a faulty clip, they can jump teeth. Worth changing it 👍

    • @CodgerBiker

      No worries. I’ve heard of others who have said the same, possibly due to lean fuelling to meet emissions. I’d have it checked by dealer as that is not normal in my experience. My bike starts fine every time - I hope that’s not tempting fate 🤞

  • @greatfallskam

    Hi Codger Biker. Do you check the coolant expansion tank level with bike leaning over on side stand or standing bike up level ( Min. and Max mark ) ? Thanks.

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  2 роки тому +1

      I checked it level ground on a paddock stand. It doesn't matter too much. More important, in my opinion, is check radiator is full 👍
