Can't thank you enough for all the specialized set up info on the 790R! I just picked mine up and I'm soaking up all this info like a hungry hippo. Please keep the info coming on this bike! Love it!

Thank you for uploading this easy to understand tutorial 👍 I have just purchased the 890Adventure R and it is diving too much in the forks under braking, this will help a lot!!
Thank you very much for this. Just bought a 890 Adventure R and this will be the first thing I do when I pick it up from the dealer. Greetings from Germany
The R model is only $1k more than the regular model. The R comes with an excellent manual with some predefined settings "Comfort", "Standard", "Sport" , etc. Definitely set the sag immediately (although I thought it was 30% of 240mm or 72mm of sag). I'd advise leaving Hi Speed compression on standard and play with the other settings first. I have a 29" inseam too - there are no easy options to lower the bike. The low seat only drops the height by 10mm - not worth the money. However, it is so well balanced, that getting a foot down isn't too bad. You just have to pick your stopping spots more carefully in the dirt. If you plan to ride in the dirt, this will embarrass a Tiger 800. The Tiger is top heavy and this bike is 'low heavy'. I've owned 3 Triumphs and loved all of them, but this is the real deal for dirt use and will be much, much easier for a short guy to ride offroad. Solid Performance, Super Plush, etc., will be able to help you if you have to have both feet on the ground. I love this bike - you won't regret it. Cheers
I don't plan to put a deposit on any brand or model that I have not test ridden first .. I am surprised the Indian FTR-1200's are available to test ride now .. Maybe not many options for luggage.. KTM 790 and Yamaha 700 Tenere are still a myth in the USA.. My thinking is that the KTM with the low gas tank my have a much lower center of gravity ... I don't like the idea of having to pay 60 cents per gallon extra for premium gas for these performance models.. Too bad they don't have two fuel modes one for regular and one for Premium
@@mikeskidmore6754 I live in the USA and the one in my garage with 1800 miles on it isn't a myth. KTM is emphasizing that the low gas tank will give a lower center of gravity and a better balance point. A test ride is always the best option. I rolled the dice and got lucky. Cheers
There's a sticker under the seat the same that is in your set up manual that gives you KTMs settings for different ride situations cheers and thanks for the great video
Excellent point. We always forget about that since we almost always switch out to a Seat Concepts seat. But yes, that is an excellent reference and something we should have pointed out in this video. Thank you for watching.
very nice explanation for this set up. I HAVE THE SAME ABILITY ON MY 300 XC W. i WAS GOING TO BUY THE ADEVNTURE S AFTER SEEING THIS VIDEO i'M GETTING THE 790 R.
Sag won't be affected by compression and rebound. But sag should be checked somewhat regularly as springs do break in and things can move around a bit.
How are you arriving at an 85-90 mm sag range for the rear shock? By my calculation it should be 73.5 mm (2.9 inches) which is 30% of the 245mm of shock travel (9.5 inches) I was trying to get to your 85-90 mm spec before doing the math and going crazy because it's impossible to get there even with ALL the pre-load backed out and 40 lbs of luggage on the tail rack, I weigh 170lbs and I am on a stock spring. Please tell me if I'm missing something here cause that seems waay off
yes, thats the most common mistake, trying to "force" suspension to 30% of sag. THESE ARAE NOT ENDURO, DO NOT TRY TO ACHIEVE 30% SAG, adv bikes have widely different sag numbers from 20% to over 50%, set it according to manual, and see what sag numbers are get by 80kg~ riders on stock preload settings, thats your target sag
Hello I just bought the 890 adventure R and I'm only 5'9" at 140 . So I'm tip toeing at a stop would lowering the sag in the rear mor then the 85 to 90 rang help without hindering the performance?
It really would not help enough. By the time you adjusted enough to have a noticeable change in stand over height your suspension performance would suffer greatly. You would get more from a Seat Concepts Comfort LOW seat. I'm 5'8" and I have just had to learn how to hang off one side or the other. I don't even think about it anymore. The Africa Twin is even taller etc.
I have crashed 2 dozen times lol adjust it right when you get it....tirebpressure and suspension i weigh 140 with full gear yeh lol im light so the front was hitting and deflecting on roots made for some scary crashes that werent my fau lt went home and realized this bike is set up for about a 2oo lb person stock and 40 psi in the tires so its imlortant to ride it and see wha its doing just dont take it up a 12oo foot mountain for the first offroad ride lol good luck

Hi I need some help with the front end preload setting, i lift the front end in order to move the preload knob, but this knob moves with clicks or just turning the knob until it reach the position that i need? because when i try to turn the knob its like it just fits in some positions, not so easy to adjust.
Hi, I recently upgraded my shock to the xplor pro. It was preset for my weight but I'd like to know more about fine tuning compression and rebound. Can you find a 790 r rally and go over the settings for your subscribers?
We can add it to our list. The principles are still the same though. And the manual that should have come with the suspension should have some pretty detailed information on it in the meantime.
Great explanation, the shock pre-load face nut had me confused. Do you turn the hex screw or use a specific two dimple wrench on outer nut? Thanks for starting from the start (suspension setup 101) and then the finer damping tuning functions. Cheers!
Hi David, excellent vid, as usual for Upshift Online! Just one doube, considering that usually rear rider sag is around 1/3 (30-33%) of rear susp travel, and the 790R has 340mm of travel, gives a figure of 72-79mm of rear rider sag...you suggest 85-90mm ... what do you think?
Did you actually measure the sag on that bike? KTM state that it should be 25/80mm (static/rider) with a 75-85kg rider. There is no way you can get that sag with the OE spring.
Just bought a 2010 790 Adventure R. I am trying to play with the front end preload but the t-nuts will not budge. Is there some trick to this. The manual says the bike need to be up on a front stand and to take of the fender but this seems illogical that it would make any difference. Thanks for any advice.
The "t-nuts"? Are you referring to the adjustment dials at the top of the forks? Not knowing exactly what you are experiencing, we highly recommend swinging by your local KTM dealer and simply asking one fo the staffers if they can help you really quickly.
Hi. I want to upgrade my S model. Would it make sense to keep 200 mm travel or would you increase to 240? Which are the main drivig feeling differences between S and R? Thanks
I've always heard rider SAG should be around 30% of total suspension travel... Which on a 240mm rear suspension is around 72mm. May I ask you where your suggestion of 85-90mm comes from? Don't want to sound polemic. That's not my native language... Just curious as I'm trying to learn as much as I can on this bike! :)
