Try to check the valves without removing the orange clip. If the exhaust cam lever slides out of position it can be a bear to slide back into position. To check the right exhaust valves may require a narrow feeler gauge with this orange clip in place (purchase one).
there are 2 little spacer type sleeves on each side the clip goes on. you have to slide them both towards left side of bike. you can feel them with your finger. hope this helps

I was thinking the same, I've read people having issues with the shim moving out of position etc. I'll try with the clip in place and see how it goes.
