To this day it's still my favourite console. Gaming owes a lot to that little box of innovation. You're also absolutely right about replacing the drive, it's a must at this point, especially as it opens up the system to play obscure titles we never got. One of my favourites being a typing game based on Evangelion!
Replacing the drive with an ODE is definitely gonna be a must-do mod as drives die, but one really cool thing about playing burned DC discs is that they're not region locked. So as long as Evangelion Typing Project E has a .cdi release [which I haven't looked into despite crying my eyes out to End of Evangelion and 3.0+1.0 at least once a year], it can be played on OG hardware with a burned CD-R
A few things to note regarding some of the info provided in the video: -GD-Rom media disc is NOT AT ALL easy to hack and pirate. It was simply a code name, of which the system received many during its creation like Katana, Blackbelt, Dural as a few examples. -Divers 2000. Not Drivers 2000. -Cannon Spike is only one of the rarest titles exclusively in the PAL region. -Nemoy was not the voice actor for the Seaman creature. He simply voiced the narrator in the game. -The contest to name the console was held internally within SEGA corporate. There has been suggestion that WARP's own Kenji Eno (who had a good partnership position within SEGA) won the contest. While SEGA has never officially confirmed it, I believe Seaman creator Yoot Saito has stated that Eno came up with the name "Dreamcast" during the internal contest to name the system. - A lack of advertising and marketing (especially in US) was definitely not one of the reasons for the system's demise. SEGA spent a reported 100million in advertising alone. With that outta the way, I still want to say thank you for making a video dedicated to Dreamcast. Its one of my all time favorite systems ever made and I love to see the system get some exposure even after so many years have gone by.
That bit about the then president of SEGA doing everything he could to keep the company and Dreamcast afloat was both sweet... and kind of heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing this video! Oh, since I'm curious... SNES!

I got mine for £20 with a VMU long after they were discontinued and I think it's the best gaming purchase I've made so far~
The fact that amazes me the most was that Ryuichi Sakamoto was the creator of the Dreamcast Startup. My family and I are crazy fans of YMO and Sakamoto. His music and YMO was brilliant.
I remember spending almost a whole night at my friend's house getting the online functions to work / browser to load. We hardly did anything with it, but just witnessing a game console use the internet even in the slightest blew my mind at the time.
The Dreamcast had so much about it that was far ahead of its time. It's still such a blast to play, even today. It has such a nostalgic and warm feeling to it. Love seeing some love for one of my favorite consoles!

My DC, bought in '00, still works perfectly, never needed any kind of repair 🙌🏻 The reason why it failed is very simple: the Dreamcast was way ahead of it's time (not having DVD as media also counts, but let's keep it simple).
Growing up, the 2 consoles I wanted was the gamecube and the dreamcast, I was fortunate enough to play on one dreamcast, but hardly anyone I knew had one or knew what it was
9:45 I don't know, the Dreamcast I felt had pretty good marketing in the US. There were plenty of TV adverts and magazine ads for the console and its games.
I was born in 1991. I had a Sega Dreamcast when they were still popular. Thanks for making this video. I also play Sega Dreamcast with a N64 controller.
Dreamcast utilized Hall Effect Joysticks all them years ago to prevent stick drift and yet now Console manufacturers probably purposely use potentiometers which wear out so they can continually sell more and more controllers which is a smack in the face of gamers especially since we know stick drift could’ve been fixed if they wanted to fix it but nope not current manufacturers and it’s sad that Sega put actually built high quality controllers which still work to this very day without drift problems
10:12 This story is so tragic.... Like he believed so much in the dreamcast, and ultimately died with it. I can't imagine a CEO doing this today, for any company. The only crime Dreamcast was guilty of was being born in the generation of the PS2. It had so many good ideas and pushed boundaries, and encapsulated a very specific visual aesthetic and era of games, pretty much the last era of real artistic innovation in the AAA space. It is absolutely insane how many classic games came out on that system in such a short time. And yeah, that machine is a loud old bastard. I wanted to play my friend's once when I was a kid in the middle of the night, turned the volume down on the TV to 0 and everything, the machine turning on woke everyone up...

10:54 is so spot on. I remember reading a old sega magazine in the UK being really sad to read that sega pulling out of the console business. I only heard or read issues with sega 32x/CD/Saturn (btw I love the saturn also my friend who had one introduced me to Tomb raider on it.) I was aware as a little kid that the dreamcast was a target for piracy back in the day and i was one of the cheapskate kids who got some of those games illegally at Flea Markets, but keep in mind I was a child who only could spend weekly 2 or 5 british pounds at the time, I also had the habit of refusing to spend on my school lunch money just so I could buy games legally or ilegally at flea markets for cheap. The dreamcast introduced me to the Phantasy Star Online series, Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Rez, Fur Fighters, Unreal Tournament. I had a ton of games donated to me when I got one even having save files with high level or max level characters so I could just go on phantasy star n just curb stomp the enemies lol. My dream is to get 2 more Dreamcast controllers and 3 more VMUs. Then have a 4-person Sonic Shuffle party! I think the game is way better than Mario Party and I wish it would get some kind of port but the VMUs showing you your hand so other players can't see it is genius game design!
I love sega dreamcast. We got it about 10 years ago, at the time I didn't know anything about it but at about that time yt community started publishing ton of videos on it. I have built very nice collection, with ton of controllers, lightguns, around 6 VMUs and VGA box. Unfortunately I think VGA box died, around 2019 and that's when I packed it in the closet... Good video. I never owned a Dreamcast but I am thinkful for the ports on GameCube PS2 & Xbox. Skies of Arcadia Legends & The Sonic Adventure games are some of my favourites.😊
Dreamcast was also the first Hi-Definition/EDTV system. If they had Demo units with flatscreens in VGA mode I think it would have been a big selling point for the system. When the PS2 demo units first came out and had LCD screens with them I knew people would see it as futuristic (even though they only displayed Composite on those LCDs and it looked all shitty and smeary)
Every new console owned was special in its own way but Dreamcast had a little extra special for me, I think it was the first time I had a arcade feeling and looking console at home with games like crazy taxi, Soul caliber, ready to rumble, hydro thunder, dynamite cop, power stone, house of the dead ect. It really felt like a whole new level of gaming at the time. Still haven’t really captured the arcade at home feel since in my opinion plus there were plenty of other great games on top of the arcade style ones, shenmue and resident evil are some of my all time favorites too.
I had a Dreamcast with 4 controllers 4 vmus, and 36 games, including typing of the dead with the keyboard. Never should have sold it, biggest gaming regret
More facts:1) “Project Berkeley” was the code name for Shenmue. 2) Dreamcast hardware limitation permit character models from being able to move individual limbs such as fingers. Sony commercial campaigns for the PS2 constantly showed highlights of PS2 games moving fingers in the commercials. 3) The Dreamcast was developed in collaboration with M$ Bill Gates who assisted in the online features and added Windows CE and directX 4)The Dreamcast like the Sega Saturn has a internal Battery that stores internal options like Date and Time. If you Dreamcast asked you to input date and time on launch. The battery is dead. However. If you turn the Dreamcast on and don’t play any games. The battery recharges. Some people browse the net or just leave the lid up for a hr or 2.
I only ever knew two people who had a Dreamcast. The only two games I ever heard about were Code Veronica and Craxy Taxi. Honestly, I was surprised that nearly 700 games were made for it!
Powerstone was one of the best fighting games ever made even in comparison to smash bros, hell it was even funner than smash bros in some aspects and even more innovative arguably. If you like fun games at all it is a must play for every gamer

When the PS2 demo units first came out and had LCD screens with them I knew people would see it as futuristic (even though they only displayed Composite on those LCDs and it looked all shitty and smeary)
the thing that is shitty and smeary is your kds
Every new console owned was special in its own way but Dreamcast had a little extra special for me, I think it was the first time I had a arcade feeling and looking console at home with games like crazy taxi, Soul caliber, ready to rumble, hydro thunder, dynamite cop, power stone, house of the dead ect. It really felt like a whole new level of gaming at the time. Still haven’t really captured the arcade at home feel since in my opinion plus there were plenty of other great games on top of the arcade style ones, shenmue and resident evil are some of my all time favorites too.
I bought one a bit blindly during the start of this year and man, it's so great!!
The best video games console ever, thanks for you ❤.
The Dreamcast didn’t fail us, we failed it
7:12 this is my favorite game on Dreamcast on that game
The reason why the processor chip for the VMU was called “Potato” is because it’s meant to be a pun of potato chip.
And never forget that the most expensive game was made for the Dreamcast. Shenmue.
I loved my Dreamcast. It was awesome
Hey I remember some of these facts from your RE3 stream last week
I had a Dreamcast with 4 controllers 4 vmus, and 36 games, including typing of the dead with the keyboard. Never should have sold it, biggest gaming regret
50 facts about kai Morgan
The Dreamcast is one of the best consoles ever
Because it’s a “Potato Chip”!
Sad it was Sega's last console but least they went out with a good one
More facts:1) “Project Berkeley” was the code name for Shenmue.
2) Dreamcast hardware limitation permit character models from being able to move individual limbs such as fingers. Sony commercial campaigns for the PS2 constantly showed highlights of PS2 games moving fingers in the commercials.
3) The Dreamcast was developed in collaboration with M$ Bill Gates who assisted in the online features and added Windows CE and directX
4)The Dreamcast like the Sega Saturn has a internal Battery that stores internal options like Date and Time. If you Dreamcast asked you to input date and time on launch. The battery is dead. However. If you turn the Dreamcast on and don’t play any games. The battery recharges. Some people browse the net or just leave the lid up for a hr or 2.
The history's world's greatest console ladies and gentlelman
Great video, I got my DC exclusively for Code Veronica and it was worth it for those awesome graphics compared to RE on PS.
Mannn I wanna a port of evolution and it's sequel
Damn. Number 3 was sad 😢
Skies of Arcadia is still my favourite video game of all time.
Love that hes using Sonic adventures musics in the background ❤️
My cousin's were born cause of this console they're 20 and 18 going into penstate university.
@@filipmartinez1162 Chump it's super ironic you called someone a fanboy and you're here on every comment "fangirling" kidboy get your lame 😼y self outta here bozo
Oh man, This brings me back! I had such a love-hate relationship with the DC back in the day/!
I really enjoyed the saturn and dreamcast. Great systems.
Dude same!! I was 12 and about to turn 13 that December. I remember thinking “how can it get any more polished then this !” Haha needless to say I was not good at forecasting the future for processing power or technology in general 😅
I rem i played crazy taxi and Resident Evil Code Veronica on it, crazy how the Playstation blew there asses away though its still cool the history and effort that went into the system.
Hundreds of more exclusive and better games on it.
@filipmartinez1162 true many I havnt played and those days they put actual passion into the games todays market, it doesn't do justice.
@@filipmartinez1162 yes you have an L take clown
Using the fishing rod for crazy taxi worked.
Easily the best console on the planet. I have little regrets spending $1000 on a modded console with completely replaced & recapped internals, including the awesome DCHDMI
Great system , shame it didn't last longer , I wander what sega's next machine would have been . It was a real shame when they stopped producing hardware .
Damn I miss my sega Dreamcast burn games..
When it comes to the Sega Dreamcast, my favorite games are, Shamu and power Stone.
Nice video. You missed some cool facts about how Microsoft started dipping their toes in the console market with Dreamcast (years before XBox was even being designed), but it added a brutal stabbing in UK as a Dreamcast fact, so it balances out.
