    Terry Kath was the heart and soul of this band. He was in my humble opinion in the top 5 greatest guitarists of all time. And when you factor in that he was also playing all the rhythm parts and all of those unbelievable solos and singing lead vocals on top of all of it, well maybe he was the best.

    This particular recording of "I've Been Searching So Long" blows me away..... Terry Kath was the best innovative rock, blues, jazz, soul guitarist I've ever heard. He was the heart and soul of this band. I do remember hearing on the radio the day after his death, and knew it was him.... Long before I knew his name. I wish that I was able to see him play and sing before he died, but I was only turning 13 at that time. Those who see all these videos can tell what a major difference this man made in this world. His music lives on.... He will never be forgotten by true Chicago fans all around the world. This IS real talent at it's finest..... Rest in peace Terry..... Thanks for the great soulful music!

    At this point in Terry's life, he was done with this project. He, like all great artists, went through a period of self-harm, awareness. Unfortunately, with all the money and fame, he didn't make it out of the other side. The 70's was the peak of our modern civilization. Like all art, the music reflected the times. Music today reflects society in decline. All the computers, gender neutrality, abortion rights will not fix a society that is broken down and rife with moral decay. I am eternally grateful these videos exist. They are hope that we as a species are capable of such beautiful art where life is so short filled with so much pain and love.

      "Chicago Transit Authority" and "Chicago ll" inspired me to stop noodling on the guitar 🎸 that my dad had bought my young 13 year self way back then and take some serious lessons. Just listen to "Introduction" from "Transit Authority" ( written by Kath) and people will understand

He has that great voice plus impressive riffs and writing skills. A multitalented guy like Kath. I really enjoy how much he gets into a song. I've read derogatory comments about his "vocal gymnastics" or whatever. I can't imagine that's a bad thing! I'm a new Terry Kath fan but can't imagine that first decade of Chicago without Cetera. I saw Chicago last summer(With The Doobie Brothers). I went mainly to see the Doobs because they were my favorite band growing up in the 1970's and I finally had a chance to see them. I lowered my expectations when it came to Chicago, though. Kath was dead, Cetera had left the band decades ago and they hadn't had a hit in years.
    All I could say was WOW! Chicago had a singer who did Kath and Cetera proud. The horn section, while not exactly young anymore, STILL could play and played perfectly. And they did EVERYTHING. All the old hits, all the good songs. I sang along with every song along with forty thousand other concert goers.

    Mr Terry Kath is clearly in the driver’s seat. Their is a reason the Tanglewood show has so many comments. The music enthusiasts are way more perceptive than the publicists will ever know. That particular show reveals a lot of subtle things! Terry is watching the drummer on every critical change! Locking in and keeping the tempo up. All players know that slowing down is not at all good. Rushing can increase intensity, but always needs to be controlled. Adjusted only at certain times in a song. Terry was fully aware that his playing was remarkable on this performance. Guiding the band. But without Danny in sync, the magic could be lost. Not that the other bandmates couldn’t take over. But everyone knew that the band sounded best when Terry had the ball. Keeping egos in check, must have been hard. That selfless vibe from everyone is so endearing to watch! I think it’s the main reason the show is so intensely emotional and popular.

    This is one "Classy" band. Probably the best back then in the 70's. Music today just does not compare to this. These guys were excellent- all of them. But I have to say, Peter and Terry were the very best. Hard to replace those two.

      For sure. I saw Peter in an interview saying he went solo so he'd be more than just a singer in a band. I think everyone knows he was so much more than that. I love this whole band but I always thought of Terry and Peter as the leaders and heart of the band. I never get tired of their music.

      @@cathyh8092 I agree. We loved Terry and never, ever fail to mention how revered he was & still is. Thank you for including Peter equally. They were the soul and the heart of Chicago. That makes two of us who think so!
      ~~~~~~~~~
      Peter Cetera is not nearly praised enough.He was a frickin DYNAMO! SUCH a talent!.
      He gave so much and was barely noticed by his band.
      I think much less of Chicago for slighting him when he breathed life back into the band after the wind was sucked out of their sails at Terry's shocking death.
      Peter has a huge contingent of fans who recognize his talents and rightfully praise him. But many only dole out their love for Terry, like a dead, sacrificed Holy martyr. And give no credit or recognition to Peter. I am sure Terry had his 'things' that made him a faulty human being.
      But in this world we seem to have Terry worshippers and Peter despisers. No middle ground. When, it can and should be said BOTH were brilliant at what they did and for what they gave of themselves.
      I feel sorry for Cetera for always been deemed the devil infidel. PC didn't call the shots and turn them into a "sappy ballad band". Mgmt, their label & producers went where the money was and it was in those lush love songs. The public ATE that content up and wanted more and showed again and again they LOVED it. So, they band kept doing it!
      So, fucking don't be raggin on Peter Cetera for something beyond his control. He had talent pouring from every hole, even out his arse!! He wrote like magic. Literally everything he wrote practically had No. 1 HIT written on it.
      So, give the man some credit where credit was rightfully due!
I also loved that Terry and Peter were such tight buds, doing all their family trips and vacays together.       Tele's with Humbuckers always sound great but Terry could have made a broom sound good he was just that great of a player. Saw them in 69 & three months before they played at Tangelwood in 1970. Both times Terry just used one guitar for the show as he did & back then it was his Gibson's. At Tangelwood it was one of his Fender Strats he used for the entire set. These days folks change guitars like blinking you eye's I still wonder as many do just what would have gone down if he had had time to record with Jimi but sadly we will never know . To of the best players to come out of Rock n roll in the 60s & early to mid 70s & had they collaborated it would have been something else to hear. Seeing both Mitch Mitch ell & Danny playing on the same album & come now they would have had to if Terry & Jimi had their say & they would have had it ,that would have been glorious on the ears.
      @@TheNaturalust The best documentary I've seen about Terry Kath is by his daughter who was only a toddler when he died. This documentary tells his story with all the good and bad. In it, Jimi Hendrix saw and heard Terry Kath in person and immediately told him that he was better on the guitar than himself and he hired Chicago Transit Authority to open for him on his next tour.
      I saw both groups together in 1969 before the CTA album was released and nobody had heard of them. When the MC introduced them, he slurred their name and none of us could understand it. They opened with "I'm a Man" and closed with "Only the Beginning".
      After they finished, the MC said, "Now it's time for Jimi Hendrix!", the crowd screamed, "No, not yet! We want to hear more from these guys, whoever they are!"
      I saw the original Chicago Transit Authority with Terry Kath 3 more times afterwards. Their second album had their new name, "Chicago" by then. Rumor had it that the city said they couldn't use their first name but they could use the second one. Go figure.
      @ You lucky dog! What an amazing time for evolving rock music. There was something in the air that affected the music and culture so strongly and wonderfully in a relatively short time it seems.
      I’m curious what you, who were there, think caused that period of so much fantastic music and creativity? Was it the drugs? A rebound from a less free culture? New music marketing and distribution techniques? Television? It was before my time but as a musician there is so much there that is impossible to ignore. Thanks!
