Very cool! I know Fallon. That Baldwin locomotive was manufactured less than a quarter mile from my old childhood home. New Millenium steel is an account I’m working with in Fallon.
Wanted to add a comment from a friend who is a nuclear physicist and use to be stationed on a submarine. He said they are two types of sailing vessels, submarines and targets… L O L i’m sure you’ve heard all that before… You look handsome in your hat and as usual Kellie looks smoking hot! 😍
@@Cojiii1959 Thank you Carl, you are too kind. Wow, amazing how those things work out with the engine being made so close to your childhood home! I was imagining a train like that going at full steam; that would be a sight. I like steel: working with it, hauling it, and designing different little projects with it. It has been so volatile price wise over the years and appears as if a lot of it along with aluminum seems to be imported from overseas. It is interesting all the different metal recipes of alloys that some, such as knife makers use. I prefer a steel frame on a bicycle over graphite.
Doug and Kellie show great concept.Marylin had some interesting stuff on soda lake.that meal looks good.i would want a nap after that.i went to Fallon once the sand was up all over the fences.no wind when i arrived but the next day heading back to Reno there were literally ocean type of waves of sand blowing across the highway. Thanks Doug and Kellie show
Thank you for the excellent title Casey. I liked your idea of the "Doug and Kellie Show"; good thinking Casey! You claim the honor; not me. Kellie used to live in Fallon area, and you are right about the sand ...blows everywhere and gets into everything. Hawthorne has some winds, but not as bad with sand, at least not in the more protected center of town where I live. I am betting you will get tons of compliments on your American made Stormy Kromers, when you start feeling like a movie star just don't let it go to your head! Thanx for the friendship.

Hi Doug! Thanks for another great ride! Fallon looks real interesting as does the museum. According to the weatherman, snow about 10,000 feet up in the Yosemite - Sequoias tonight. We had some good rain over here today and more tomorrow; need that fresh, new snow pack again this Winter. Merry Christmas to you and Kelli!!🎄🌲☃️❄️
Hi Dana! Glad you are getting some rain on the west side. I am hopeful it will be a good solid normal winter in the Sierra. Bring on the snow! Thank you...and thank you for supporting me as a faithful viewer, and dare I say fan. We went so many places this summer. It is going to be a great winter!
A pretty amazing area out in sort of the middle of no where. Great video! I think people miss great opportunities when they don't explore the lesser traveled roads and towns. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Hello Brother Doug, you never fail to teach me something new in your travels! I'm fairly familiar with the Fallon area, but I sure didn't know about Soda Lakes and their history, very interesting. Looks like a pretty nice museum in Fallon too. I'm curious though about the opening scenes of the V&T...is that a teaser of the next adventure? The Doug and Kellie show is definitely number one fun in my book!! 🇺🇸
Hi Brother! We like to find places off the beaten path that others have not covered. The museum has a big mineral display there; it is worth a visit. The V & T is not a teaser of a next adventure, but I am on the lookout for any of the old big iron...I should cover the one in Ely after the snow melts. The farmers were burning a massive ancient cottonwood stump near Yerington, so I had to have fun with the fire and pair it with the steam and iron. It was so hot I dared not get too close. I have snakes, cougars, and trains on your list. Received your nice card in the mail, thank you! People are even starting to recognize me in the area, not as much as WH, but more and more all the time. As Alfred E Newman would say, "What, me worry?", or something like that.
@@CalNeva Ha ! Mad magazine! I'm pretty sure that's how I acquired my (twisted?) view of the world, lol. I was thinking of suggesting a trip to the Nevada Northern in Ely next summer. Also some hikes along some of the abandoned railroad right of ways in your area might be something to consider. I just saw one of those shorts on y.t. about an elk hunter being stalked by a cougar...really scary stuff! Cougar wouldn't back down! Be careful out there my Brother!
Smoke, fire and steam... 🔥That train 🚂🚃 must be awesome for the tourists. The naval air station seems in such a remote area, probably by design, and potential, noise issues. (Those billboards are absolutely awesome.🎉) Fallon certainly appears to have a lot to offer. That museum is so cool. 🤗👏🏻 The facts about Soda Lake are very interesting, and informative, too. Marilyn is a font of information. (I love old pics.) ***Thanks for all the enjoyable places that you and Kellie shared with us, Doug. The background, and info about them have been riveting. I hope your holidays are absolutely delighful, Kellie, Marilyn, and of course, our 🎊knowledgeable, never boring host, Doug.🤠🏡🙏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Rhonda! You made my day....again. I will have to do a future train video using your brilliant title of "Smoke, Fire, and Steam"! I think the restaurant is a real find, I bet you know the good ones in your area. I had to cancel my adventure today because of the weather, but Kellie and I will be hiking up a brutal grade on Friday. Tomorrow I will be going solo somewhere not yet determined. Doing yet more projects around the place. Have lots of projects planned: you know me, always busy. Sometimes I get buzzed by low flying fighter jets in the desert or mountains, so I will have to be quicker on the draw to film them for everyone. I missed a bald eagle on this last video by a moment; it was hunting ducks around Soda Lake. Got some snowshoes on the way so I am excited about going up into the Sierra. Instead of Snowshoe Thompson they could call me SnowBerry Snowshoe. Take care my New England friends!
@@CalNeva A train video would be cool. Thanks, Doug.🤗 I hope you have a great time tomorrow. It sounds like Friday will be quite a challenging hike. I know you both go prepared, complete with lunch and cookies. (I believe you were munching on a cookie today, at the end. Considering Kellie was with you... 🍪😉) I know what you mean. The weather here was an adventure, yesterday. Balancing your hikes with household chores, I'm sure is something you have to consider... So many ambitious plans, Doug... WOW If anybody can do it, it's you. Take care, and enjoy the next couple of days, Doug...Happy Holidays 🤠👏🏻
Again Doug, thanks for satisfying my curiosity on yet another area I so frequently pass by! I have stopped into the bakery if I'm through there in the A.M hours for the best cinnamon rolls ever ! Nice bolo, what kinda stone is that?
Hi Tim! Oh man, that sounds so good cinnamon rolls in the morning. I bet you already have snow up your way. The stone is from Gabbs, Nevada area, some type of mixed turquoise...my friend Richard the gold miner set it in silver for me, I just love it.
Hi guys! Thanks for the great adventure! Doug, have you ever been on the base at NAS Fallon? It’s worth checking out if you can (I used to work on the base a long time ago). Soda Lakes has a very interesting history too, especially that it’s of volcanic origins! I had no idea the lakes were 800,000 years old. I wonder if the volcanic activity would case them to explode again? Fallon itself is such a quaint little town. That Courtyard Cafe looked really good - pecan pie is delicious! What a great local museum, too, with a very smart curator. Stillwater looks gorgeous this time of year. Just curious, have you guys been to nearby Hazen hot springs? I tried to find it but was unsuccessful. PS - Kellie, I love the boots!
Hi G! I have been to NAS Fallon several times. I should check in my ID so I can use the grocery on base. One thing about Kellie; she is super stylish...I thought her boots looked good on her too. I remember when all the wooden rail ties caught fire near Hazen, but never been to the hot springs. We will have to see if we can find them for you. They have 3-4 people on staff at museum and Donna is an excellent resource for all things/events native Nevada (like the pow wows). Going to try to go up East Corey Friday for the views. Starting to get some snow coming in the eastern Sierra this week. Have a good walk with Pup!
Your beginning was very confusing jumping back & forth between the Train in Carson City & a burning tree out in the open somewhere, then having a title saying Fallon NV. Also the Carson Sink is northeast of Fallon, not south of Fallon. But glad you finally did show Fallon sites & highlighted their museum. Churchill county has many interesting places to visit.
Is that safe? Maybe in dry Nevada you can put out the deep coals in that stump-fire with copious water, here after forest fires stumps will reignite from deep coals long after the fire's put out.
Oh Hi, that was a big dead cottonwood in the Yerington farm country....there was a crew clearing out a field for a new ditch and were keeping track of it ...such a cool shot I had to get it!
Hi You Two, All I can say about Fallon now is that the population has changed very much (for the worse) from when I lived there. Back in 1962 when doors weren't locked and mostly hard working ranchers and farmers with a small military mix of Navy and Air Forcepopulation. There was none of the vandalisim that is seen there now with all the growth that has happened. I think the "Good Old Days" are gone now and will never return . The big checker board building with the dome on top is what remaions of the Air Force Station and the FAA runs the long range radar now for air traffic control ,not to have anything to do with or for the Navy, The data from that radar is fed to Palmdale, CA traffic control center.. Hope some of this helps you and Kelly. . Harry in AK
Hi Harry, yes, times have certainly changed....alas. I remember when 395 in Carson Valley was a two lane, now it is a four lane race track! Some things I miss, like the cabooses on the end of the trains. I like new technology, but some of it is not all it's cracked up to be. Thank you again for the good info. 👍
- very nicely done. All the Best in the Holly Days.
Thank you Steven, hope you are enjoying your winter! Life is good.

That white sand is tufa. Mostly Calcium carbonate hence the name soda ash and of course Soda Lake. You must be atop a large dormant volcano.
