War is not the same, people don’t go to war to torture and get rich, they do it to test their ability and mental fortitude and seek adventure, there are many hero’s who come out of wars, there are little to no hero’s in the criminal fraternity.

I was around in the sixties and they were involved in the drug trade but it was pretty small in those days it was mainly pep pills in clubs at the weekend I've got a lot of respect for the Krays they didn't choose the world they were born into but they had to survive and prosper in it which sometimes means doing bad things. But i wish people would stop giving on as if they were some legendary neighbourhood watch scheme who patrolled the streets making sure women were safe. if i saw someone trying to break into my neighbor's house or trying to rape a woman I would act most people would but that's hardly keeping London safe

Yes, they were bad men... to other bad men.
They are missed because people like this looked after their own local community. They kept their communities clean and safe. They would come to the aid of locals in strife who couldn't help themselves. They kept people out of trouble, family's could go to them with their own problems and appeal for help.
This is something that is sadly lacking in a modern 'diverse' London.
Actor Bill Murray was heading down the wrong path with the wrong people, his mother approached the Kray's worried about the path Bill was taking. The Krays put him in acting school to deflect him towards a better life. Now he's a famous (in U.K.) actor, not a dead gangster.

Their is a reason so many people came to the funeral. It's because the krays protected the people from actuall nasty men. They made sure no little twats caused trouble. They may not have been the nicest of men but they had respect for the people and stood up for local men and women and made their lives safer. More than any government or council ever done. Rip

In the 1950s the Krays were "the twats causing trouble"
In the their teens they regularly beat other young guys with bicycle chains
They caused trouble in local cafes and dance halls unless the owners paid them not to that's how extortion works if people didn't pay them they didn't help or protect them just because they didn't shit on their own doorstep doesn't mean that didn't shit on others

There is a fascination with the Krays which I also share. However having lived through the troubles in Northern Ireland I have witnessed gangsterism, hardened men, a mafia controlled society, torture, brutality and violence on a level way beyond what the Krays or any other English gangsters offered. That's not in any way a boast or glamourising, but simply a fact of life growing up in Belfast. Unfortunately during this period we had hundreds of Kray type characters with capabilities and resources that make the Krays look like the krankies.

Not when they were running about the East end they were big fish in a tiny pond they only became legends after they went down and the books started to come out. Ordinary people around Bethnal Green may have feared them but not the other "firms"
Like the Richardsons, the Nashe, Fred Foreman, the Tibbs, Harry Heyworth etc. There was mutual respect between the gangs and they would often do business together and socialise together they all knew that any sort of gang war cost money and attracted the attention of the police of course there would be flare ups between individuals but they would generally try to keep the lid on things there was never a"war"between the Krays and the Richardsons. Cornell's murder was the result of Ronnie's paranoid schizophrenia.
