My wife and I share a hobby room, our desks are so we pretty much sit back to back while I paint minis and she paints her face (with make up). We'd tease each other often that Im painting toys and she's just painting her face over and over again. But many the time I have watched her through her mirror and realised how much BETTER she is at painting faces than I (her own, none the less). You've done a good thing here, Scott, I've finally got the courage to cross the trenches of the hobby room, wave the white flag and ask for help/advice.
I often joke with my partner that mini painting and nail/makeup art are the same hobby. Lighting, brushes and tools, rows of pots (nail/mini), airbrushing, uv lamps etc. This was one of my fave vids of yours. Thoughtful and an interesting look at bridging the gap between artforms.

My partners makeup skills are 11/10, and I've been amazed by how much I've learned from her that can be applied to painting. I do believe my favorite thing about the current stage of miniatures is the way it's connecting to other disciplines of visual art, and makeup absolutely is one we guys are only just starting to recognize more.
YES! This is a great video 💕Knowledge transcends between hobbies. Just the other day i customized a doll (Barbie size) for a friend. I used my miniature painting skills to paint her face, inspired myself from a makeup tutorial, used milliput to make her a lightsaber and followed a cosplay tutorial to make foam armor. The more you learn from different sources the easyer it get to solve problems. Also you get backup projects to fend off the dreaded artblock and hobby burnout. This video made me so happy, i've been wanting it for so long. Thanks man 💕
This was a great video, also great application of the techniques! I was a makeup artist before covid and when I was at home all day with my table top RPG boyfriend I realized my skill could apply to his hobby. I feel like everything you mentioned here is what I try to bring to a 32mm model (easier said then done). The downside is my skills were around color correction and bringing out someone's features, not creating skin tones from nothing. So the last year has been me revisiting painting from a color theory perspective. Something that, not just meca did without realizing it with his video on skin tones using pastel colors. I was like da'h that is literally the colors I would use to correct reddness or baggy eyes before putting foundation on a client face.
I didn't know it at the time, but I needed those close pans through your paint pallete. It felt intimate. Great job with the face, and now I have to go watch some makeup tutorials.
the camerawork and editing in this video so good. maybe it’s just been a second since i watched a miniac vid but it feels almost transcendent, had to go back a couple times to pay attention cause i was so distracted by shot composition or a juicy time lapse, 10/10

I love your scientific method, you're absolutely my favorite when it comes into getting into the nitty gritty of any particular painting subject. Personally, I love both of your faces. Your face painted with makeup techniques *looks* like a lady that put her make up on and, yes, more feminine, while your standard style shows so much "natural" warmth and brightness that just draws me (maybe a personal preference?). I imagine you'll find your way of blending these two styles in your own way, but I like both of them for different reasons!

this is a great idea and the results are significant! I’ve done a lot of this kind of a cross-skill research, looking up videos for ship model builders, train set builders, gundam sprayers, car sprayers, just normal oil painters… there’s SO many other areas of art that can teach us about ours!

When you grow up in and around stage theater, with a mom that does make-up and costumes and a dad that does scenery and props, the make-up stuff stuff, color selection, and some painting effects are almost second nature without realising it.
I'm really impressed how you took something not related to the hobby, and use it to get better! Great thinking and the effect is quite visible, so it pays off. That reminds, that it is worth to spent some time to widen the perspective (I don't know if it is the way to say it, because English is not my first language, but I think you know what I meant). We can always learn things from other disciplines. I have seen a lot of transfer of technique between different types of model painting as well as between model making and fine art. It's cool to realize there's another avenue of useful ideas at our disposal.

Such a great subject! As mini painters we are constantly telling ourselves to highlight faces to make them stand out from the rest of the model but when we do...we just treat them just like any other object under the light! It makes much more sense to paint them in a way that actually accentuates the features we want to stand out!
As someone who is neither a professional painter OR a makeup artist, but does pay attention to both (painters cuz of me, makeup cuz of my fiance having me watch this stuff) the only real critique i have for the 2nd face (which def an improvement over the 1st) is theres a bit to much contrast between the highlights and shades.
I watch these with my fiance sometimes and people customizing Bratz dolls, theirs alot of useful tips and tricks ive never thought of. Now my fiance has been doing makeup for years now and she's way better at painting faces then I am.

I've found that doing things you've never done before is the best form of learning, since it can result in new ideas and techniques that can further the existing knowledge. For this reason (and because I genuinely have a wide interest) have I gone out and painted just about any type of thing, from model cars to warhammer mini's, to busts, tanks, helicopters, anime figurine's and even a vinyl gundam.
Dude, Amber saw the opportunity for some guy-liner and frikkin SEIZED it. Absolute legend. It goes REALLY nicely with the septum piercing! You guys are both so cute! 😭I'd love to see more guest appearances by her!

I am reminded of growing up with several sisters. Had I been interested in painting well at that time, I probably should have paid more attention to learning how makeup is applied. Though had I been blessed with a daughter, I would have had to learn how to do makeup. Regardless, mind blown... And with receiving busts and some really awesome paintbrushes from Squidmar, I really want to see how all the techniques I have learned here and other places will turn out. P. S. I look forward to the brush coffin. Got to have something to protect my brushes.
The distribution of light and dark tones definitely improved. I will say that I think you should try this again with the red color underneath everything (like on your traditional head) as the color and warmth of the skin overall definitely got dialed down to a level that feels less warm and fleshy and has more purple tones. Still could go over with the mid tone afterwards to establish your “foundation” to begin from. Possibly the color difference between the colors on the two heads was either due to: 1. you using altogether different paints, or 2. due to the translucency of your mid tone color. Even the most opaque paint will only cover 90% of the way, with the remainder letting the base color show through. Upturned nose trick works awesome! Applying Makeup always looked difficult as hell, speaking as a guy. When the day comes where the social pressure changes and even men expect men to wear makeup the ladies are gonna have a long hard laugh at our initial efforts. 😂

One thing that would be great to point out is how using the shadows/light of make up/painting can drastically change the shape of a face. With simple tweaks to how those shadows/light play across the sculpt you can make a full face narrower or fuller. A deep set eye brighter, etc.
A profound difference that looks amazing. I think that whatever technique you use, its still miniturisation so that will always be a complication to the lighting. But, if you need to learn ANY technique, you need to watch the masters [or mistresses] to learn the tricks-of-the-trade.

I enjoy this crossover. There is fun videos of makeup artists using hobby paints, now we're using makeup brushes and tutorials. Last we need makeup artists to paint miniatures. Honestly, its useful stuff since I think makeup on minis is a missed detail opportunity.

This has been pretty interesting! Definitely an improvement however in saying that they are certain aspects to both the faces that I like. You should mix both styles (maybe) Things to keep in mind: Sometimes contouring the cheeks too deeply isn’t always flattering. Rounder faces tend to look more youthful. Also instead of pink blush try using warm peach or orange tone colours. You two could actually start a makeup Chanel and I would watch 😋 so fun!!!
Interesting...my wife is a beauty therapist and I will pick her brains on this (I haven't painted any human faces yet so it never came up). How ever I am surprised your wife never suggested that you would be amazing at eyeliner application (steady hands on very fine details) mine asked me to try a while ago. The overall lesson that you can learn things from other fields is absolutely a great point! I like the cheeks of the makeup-mini a lot more, I feel that's even more of an improvement than the forehead. One thing that I wonder about is how do they look on the tabletop? Were the mini painting techniques developed with that in mind?

I learned most of my color theory from a fashion design UA-cam channel. It's so important to look for inspiration outside our hobby niche.

I will say that I think you should try this again with the red color underneath everything (like on your traditional head) as the color and warmth of the skin overall definitely got dialed down to a level that feels less warm and fleshy and has more purple tones. Still could go over with the mid tone afterwards to establish your “foundation” to begin from. Possibly the color difference between the colors on the two heads was either due to: 1. you using altogether different paints, or 2. due to the translucency of your mid tone color. Even the most opaque paint will only cover 90% of the way, with the remainder letting the base color show through. Upturned nose trick works awesome! Applying Makeup always looked difficult as hell, speaking as a guy. When the day comes where the social pressure changes and even men expect men to wear makeup the ladies are gonna have a long hard laugh at our initial efforts. 😂

On a different note, this plays well to my engineering mind. “Rely on existing knowledge “. And seriously, who better at applying pigments to faces than makeup artists?
One thing that would be great to point out is how using the shadows/light of make up/painting can drastically change the shape of a face. With simple tweaks to how those shadows/light play across the sculpt you can make a full face narrower or fuller. A deep set eye brighter, etc.
Great video! I also watch makeup tutorials to help me paint faces better. The forehead shading is a big one that really helps!

A profound difference that looks amazing. I think that whatever technique you use, its still miniturisation so that will always be a complication to the lighting. But, if you need to learn ANY technique, you need to watch the masters [or mistresses] to learn the tricks-of-the-trade.

Really enjoyed your process and how you think about improving your painting skills. I'm still at the 'my faces kinda suck' stage.. Just attempting to get highlights correctly and Whoah boy those eyeballs (monsters are more forgiving than humans). I totally agree your second forehead is an improvement. But they both look cool 2 me for different reasons.
it is strange that I picked up a bunch of makeup brushes for doing different effects and now going to check out the makeup tutorials to get better at faces. Yes, learning can come from a myriad of sources.

I enjoy this crossover. There is fun videos of makeup artists using hobby paints, now we're using makeup brushes and tutorials. Last we need makeup artists to paint miniatures. Honestly, its useful stuff since I think makeup on minis is a missed detail opportunity.

This has been pretty interesting! Definitely an improvement however in saying that they are certain aspects to both the faces that I like. You should mix both styles (maybe)
Things to keep in mind: Sometimes contouring the cheeks too deeply isn’t always flattering. Rounder faces tend to look more youthful. Also instead of pink blush try using warm peach or orange tone colours.
You two could actually start a makeup Chanel and I would watch 😋 so fun!!!

Interesting...my wife is a beauty therapist and I will pick her brains on this (I haven't painted any human faces yet so it never came up). How ever I am surprised your wife never suggested that you would be amazing at eyeliner application (steady hands on very fine details) mine asked me to try a while ago. Definitely getting more and more tempted to make your kickstarter my first.....Great video as always.

The overall lesson that you can learn things from other fields is absolutely a great point!
I like the cheeks of the makeup-mini a lot more, I feel that's even more of an improvement than the forehead. One thing that I wonder about is how do they look on the tabletop? Were the mini painting techniques developed with that in mind?
I would say a lot of what we're discussing today might not be incredibly applicable to table top painting. Maybe the forehead idea.
