  • Today I’m sharing my favorite way to fill holes when replacing cabinet or drawer hardware.
    What’s your favorite??
    This method only requires an hour of dry time, doesn’t shrink or crack… and this material can be drilled into!
    This is perfect for filling screw holes in wood before painting and for filling large holes in wood furniture too.
    I’ll also share how it compares to other fillers! It’s crazy how good it is!

    There is JB Weld Kwikwood and Quikwood. They are both epoxy putty and mix the same way. I’ve only used the Kwikwood to fill 12 dowel holes. I think I mixed too long because it began to dry and harden before I finished. I rolled a coil a bit smaller than hole and push it in the hole, broke it off about 1/4 inch high and and use a putty knife to spread the excess flat and fill the hole completely. I agree with your assessment.

    try other brands of body filler, for example at oreillly's parts store you can get evercoat pro grade premium filler, it's smoother, it's worth a shot. I think once you find one that doesn't shrink much you will like it. but again read the directions, there is very little hardener used for body filler, much less than what you're thinking, for putty the size of a AA battery you're using like less than a pea size droplet, a very tiny amount, and I mix the hardener before squeezing it out

    Very good video. As a painter, I would not finish off a repair with wood filler.
    Kwikwood is a great filler to fill the hole. I would recommend Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty (that exact product) as a finish filler. It seems like it spreads thinner than paint. You can even fill very shallow places where a layer of paint chipped off a cabinet.
    Give it a try. You’ll probably have to go to an auto parts store for it. It’s premixed in a tube, and it’s really easy to apply.

    • @ARayofSunlight
      @ARayofSunlight  Рік тому +1

      @@ARayofSunlight I just used it on a very large kitchen cabinet repainting project. I was spraying the paint, so it was very important to get a perfect filling of the shallow chips, dents, and places where a previous layer of paint peeled and was painted over. It works beautifully for me…the best product I’ve found. Let it dry completely before sanding, and be sure to sand with a solid block. Then prime the repair, and you’re good to go.

    Hello! I made a rookie mistake and finished my piece before purchasing hardware. The old hardware had an insert from the front, creating a larger hole for hardware. (Similar to the vintage hardware you showed in the beginning of the video) I can barely see the hole since the hardware covered most of it, but I can see the corner just the slightest. How would you work with an already finished product? Thanks!

    • @ARayofSunlight
      @ARayofSunlight  2 роки тому +1

      That’s an easy fix! You can fill the holes in, don’t overfill so you don’t have to sand it down. Then paint the filler. You can drill new holes into the kwikwood for your hardware. And since the new hardware covers most of the hole, you won’t notice the small touch up.

      Kwikwood would work great to fix that!

    I tried to use KwikWood this summer on a table top and it did not mix well at all. It all just crumbled and I had to throw the whole tube away. Do you have tips on storage? I kept it in my garage, but it still had some extreme temp changes since I live in Minnesota. The package doesn’t say anything about temperatures affecting it, but it could. Really want to try it again!

      Oh no!! So I usually store mine inside my house, I make sure the plastic is completely covering it and the little end sticky things are on. And of course I keep it in its tube.
      I wonder if you just had a bad batch?
      I did have a problem one time with a brand new one. It was harder to mix it and dried almost instantly once I was done mixing it. I threw it away. I’m sure I could have taken it back though. I think it was just a bad tube.
      I bet I’ve bought at least 20 of these things of kwikwood, and that’s the only one I ever had issues with.
      Sometimes it’s a little bit harder to mix than normal, but I mix a teeny tiny bit of water with it and it softens up for a few minutes so I can work with it a little bit easier.
      I hope that helps! It’s really such an amazing product.

      None of them are super great for staining. You’ll need to use a kit that will help you create a stained look over it.

    I love this stuff but for me, it definitely hardens within a few minutes, not fifteen. I have to use it in smaller batches

    • @ARayofSunlight
      @ARayofSunlight  2 роки тому

      Oh interesting! I don’t know if I’ve worked with it for a full 15 minutes or not. But it definitely lasts longer than Bondo does before it hardens. 😅

    Why did you use so much Bondo?

    • @ARayofSunlight
      @ARayofSunlight  2 роки тому

      I overfill so I don’t accidentally miss filling it in all of the way. It’s a time suck to mix more up. Plus, when I use Bondo, I usually can’t mix up only a tiny tiny amount. So why not overfill and use everything I mixed.

    What if you’re not going to paint, but stain.

    • @ARayofSunlight
      @ARayofSunlight  8 місяців тому

      KwikWood or Bondo Wood Filler are the best options. Nothing will stain the same as the wood around it, unless you have a wooden dowel of the exact wood from your project, so you might want to do some stain repair kit to make it match the stain.

    Kwikwood is good for small holes. But Bondo is still better for larger patch and more economical. And wasn't sure if you're doing it on purpose or not but you didn't use Bondo properly. You applied way too much in the first place and there's time during curing where bondo becomes very malleable. This is where you scrape off the access with razor or sharp chisel for clean surface without needing to sand.

    • @ARayofSunlight
      @ARayofSunlight  2 роки тому

      Totally agree, if you have a lot to fill, Bondo is more economical. And it’s easier to spread over a large flat area. That’s where the benefits stop though for me.😅
      When you scrape off the excess with a razor when it’s still playable, it only makes it worse when you are trying to fill the hole all the way up, and to the point that you can’t see there was a hold there before. Because you scrape off the excess and then you have to fill it in again… and again… and again.
      Just remember, just because someone does it differently than you, doesn’t mean they didn’t do it properly. 😆 There are so many different ways to do things. 👍🏼
