This is what a "Musical Genius" creates in his mind of many wonders and mysteries. Lyle's compositions are simply surreal and other worldly. Words don't do him justice. RiP Mr. Mays and thank you for leaving us your timeless Legacy. Peace

Although Lyle is gone, his legacy lives on in his music. He was one of the musical giants. His melodies and harmonies were complex, yet accessible. Do "September Fifteenth" from the "As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita" from Pat and Lyle.

As Falls Wichita...was my intro to Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny. I've listened to marvelous music by other artists in the intervening 30+ years but nothing has surpassed the mind-blown experience of the afternoon I first heard this album. Changed my life.

I just ordered a Bill Frisell CD for them. I went with “Quartet” because of the improvisation with other musicians. He varies album to album. Like "White Fang" from Unspeakable. I'll think on "Quartet" -- amazing display of his arranging, that whole record. I think for Nick's purposes some of the more aggressive stuff (like "Half a Million' or "Alien Prints" from the earlier material. Or some of his best work was with Paul Motian's trio.... but yeah! Absolutely LOVE both the records you sent them, too. Such a rabbit hole -- he's been on over a hundred recordings by now, and been a major contributor to the tunes most every guest appearance.

And it sends us into dreamland within a few notes.... absolutely magic. And the verisn of "Yallah" on Paul Motian's "Live at the Vanguard".... though that's a least a little bit of step more experimental and maybe less accessible, and longer.... still, I think they'd trip hard on that one.

Yes, "what is this?" (around the 7 minute mark) is a great question. Mays takes us places, shows us sights, and evokes feelings that are difficult to impossible to name. It's the rare Lyle Mays offering that does not trigger tears for me at some point. It's not sadness: it's more the experience of finding myself in profoundly moving emotional/psychological terrain with no words to talk about the experience. Haven't listened to Teiko in many, many years. Thanks for the reminder.

This song has some great doubling between the soprano sax and Bill Frisell. Also Nana Vasconcelos percussion is very subtle yet important here. Nana plays on some of the earlier Pat Metheny albums so you may recognize him from there. He is really pronounced on the Pat & Lyle album As Falls Witchita .... You might want to check out Bill Frisell separately. His catalog is massive and his compositions are very varied. One of my favorite modern jazz composers.
When you said "what is this?" It was soprano sax and guitar doubling so smoothly
I was fortunate to see Lyle play some of these songs live but also acoustic trio stuff too. Great improviser live!

So Teiko translates to; "honest and correct" 貞子.
So its Japanese influenced :). That was very good (just added to "Chill Out Already .04" Lex ;), heard of him but never heard his music. Very serene and relaxing. I totally get what you envisioned about the environment of the streets and the films you related it to (I tried to do that in the middle of Chill Out Already .01 & .03 with the "street" themes/topics).
King Crimson - "Matte Kudasai" has a bit of that feeling too, but a bit more romantic because of the lyrics. You guys will have to check that one out.

Just watched your reaction to Robin Tower and Too Rolling Stoned. Trower is one of the great, great underrated guitarists of all time. Bridge of Sighs is a must have in any record collection. It opens with Day of the Eagle, an absolute rocker. Very Hendrix-like. The whole album is filled with bluesy guitar riffs...truly amazing. I hope you give it more listening. There was a question somebody posed on Facebook once. It came with a picture of a huge wall of speakers and it said this is your new sound system, what is the first song you're going to play on it? My answer was Day of the Eagle by Robin Trower. You can also hear a sample of Trowers earlier guitar work on the song Conquistador by Procol Harum. The remastered version, not from the studio original recorded a couple years earlier. His solo in the middle is a sample of what was to come later when he struck out on his own.

Glad you and others here enjoyed this piece. The album works well as a whole, and is one of my all-time favorites. Also happy to hear so much recognition of Bill Frisell; there really is no one like him. He plays with remarkable restraint, and yet seems unafraid to go pretty much anywhere. I especially like his subtle pitch bends in the middle section of this piece--the tension it creates with the sax is such a sweet lonely sound.

Gosh, there's so much I want to recommend. You've explored some nice pieces by Metheny lately, but most are later work and haven't featured Mays (I think). Maybe dig back a little further to early Pat Metheny Group tracks like "San Lorenzo," "Phase Dance," "Jaco," "April Wind" and "April Joy," American Garage"; the stuff Metheny/Mays did on the album As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, including the title track (very long), "It's for You," "Ozark," and "September 15th"; and, for Lyle Mays, selections from his solo album Street Dreams, including "Feet First," "Corinho," "Possible Straight," and "Hang Time." Mays also did a terrific, more traditional jazz album called Fictionary (with Jack DeJohnette on drums and Marc Johnson on bass) that is full of engaging music for aficionados. Of the suggestions I've listed, I guess I'd love to hear you start with "Phase Dance," but it's all up to you.

I enjoyed enjoying it with two people that really appeared to get it at first listen. Took me a couple of listens before it really took. My only qualm is that Lyle didn't extend the middle section by a few more minutes. That part from 2:15 to 5:30 absolutely sends me into raptures. Lyle's work has been described by some as "atmospheric", and that perfectly describes "Teiko". No sing-along song, or very few anyway has this quality. I may be a PMG fan (Till Lyle's tragic passing I still had hopes for something remotely close to "The Way Up" to materialise , but sadly, this is no longer possible), but this disc stands proudly atop the rest...

I thought from the intro, that the title referred to the large Japanese ceremonial drum, but that is spelled Taiko. That sound you were referring to sounds like a "talking drum" played by Nana Vasconcelos. The pitch raises as you press on the sides of the drum as you hit it. @@michelemichele3375 I'm not a good source of recent Bill Frisell information. I followed him from the mid 80's, when he played guitar and guitar synth in jazz drummer Paul Motian's group ( see "Fiasco" from the 1985 album "It Should Have Happened Long Ago"- on Spotify) until the early 90's, but nothing since then. If Nick didn't like David Torn much, he probably wouldn't like that either, or the selections from Frisell's solo albums such as "Is That You" where he breaks out the distortion pedal, which Nick doesn't like. One song I like that both Bill Frisell and John Scofield play on is "Samarai Hee-Haw" from the 1985 (bassist) Marc Johnson album "Bass Desires". Check it out on Spotify. It is kind of funny in that it sounds both country and Japanese at the same time. I'm not at all up on Frisell's newer stuff, though I've been meaning to get around to listening to the album he did with Elvin Jones and Dave Holland in 2001 ("Strange Meeting"), and that's not new at all.

@@-R.Gray- You are so kind to reply with so much info. Thank you. I might get back with more responses to your recommendations but (like I just told another subscriber) I’m so deep in his rabbit hole right now, I won’t be surprised to run into Alice! And I agree. Bill might not be their cuppa here but I’ve found that I’m mostly doing this for me. And my knowledge. So thanks so much! ✨🤪
