Why is Michael my favourite drummer? Because of two albums - Caravanserai and Welcome (possibly Borboletta, on the tracks on which he plays, also). A drummer is not just a time keeper. He is not just the musician who holds the band together with glue. He is a person who can add a lot more not just with his rhythmic abilities, but with the sensitivity of his playing. This is the great lesson I learned from Michael - how to add emotion to a track from the drum throne. Michael is not a typical ‘technical’ drummer such as Billy Cobham, he is a drummer whose sensitivity you can appreciate in every beat of the stick. Michael, I am very grateful that God put us on the earth at the same time such that I could learn from the master.

This is such a fantastic show, which I found by sheer luck in manifestation. Michael Shreive just happened to get me into getting my first set when I was 14 years old in 1973 while listening to one the first new albums I ever bought, Santana's 3rd. What a full-circle mind blowout it is to see Mike at 75. I am ten years his junior.

most people know of the House of Guitars here in Rochester. The Pearl set's hardware was crap but the set itself wasn't too bad - I even got a Premier floor tom added the set - I resold it for almost the same as I bought it for. I never realized how much talent & passion goes into drumming until I went back in time and rewatched the Santana Soul Sacrifice performance at Woodstock & then watched Tanglewood because Michael felt his solo part at Tanglewood was better than Woodstock...that is what I read somewhere. It's almost like I discovered an admiration that has been hidden & surfaced after seeing his "art"...anyway...this opened up a whole new world for me & looking forward to winding down with "Drums of Compassion"....because it contains the word " passion" I'm sure it will be a reflection of all the talent gathered for this special arrangement that has been slow simmering accomplishment well worth the wait. That's all I have to say about that...much success to you always 🥁

Thank You for this interview. I stumbled across it by accident - or was it You tube algorithms? Mike Shrieve, the Santana band, Caravanserai, Zakir, these are the guides of my life. I have been an enchanted listener of music and now I am trying to become creative myself, realizing that it is hard work to battle the self doubt. What an honor to find this interview, thank you for the inspiration to work hard, to learn how to play, to transcend the limitation of the ego.

At your mention of marinating “I’m chomping at the bit”, to hear it even though it’s 200PM. Don’t take your creative seeds you’ve packaged away may have quality of time and heirloom fruit for the mind. Work play we get less efficient looking at a false reflection like Homer part of aging, weighted down by increased gravity if our situation. Increased awareness can increase gravity and thrill, perseverance without loss but gain is rejoicing at this later stage. Now with no further ado…”Drums of Compassion”.
