  • We're starting today with breaking news as the final report into the Grenfell Tower fire has been published. The 1,670 page report, chaired by Sir Martin Moore Bick has found that, heartbreakingly, the 72 deaths were avoidable and the residents of the tower were failed over a number of years by a number of organisations. The Government has responded to the improvements that must be made as have many of the organisations involved.

Why were people told to stay inside their flats instead of evacuating? This is a huge mistake and cost many many lives.

Having done a bit of research into social housing projects of the 1930's, it isn't unusual to have cut corners in construction and costs. Quarry Hill flats in Leeds was the largest social housing complex in Europe and supposedly envied by all the councils. 40 years later it's all being demolished for exactly the same reasons discussed in this episode of Loose women and Grenville. Money, greed etc etc! When will they learn?

And I'm not British... and here in the Caribbean, greed and construction is here too.

Amongst the many who need to be prosecuted for this horrendous tragedy is Tony Blair who as PM gave the cladding companies the go ahead to be able to be involved in the building and refurbishment of tower blocks despite a Parliamentary advisory group warning him of the dangers this type of cladding. So so so sickening that today's report didn't come out much sooner.

Didn’t the school next door also have the same cladding?

I saw the documentary on the Granville housing estate. Yes l agree with one comment government are cutting corners. Have awful sound proofing. Not letting the residents know theirs an emergency. Just lack of communication. I hope community in Granville have a positive outcome . I apologise for the length of this comment. 😮😢(😊😊❤❤❤❤).

They are still cutting corners, the new builds homes have awful sound proofing so you can't relax in your own home. Th government need to care about physical safety and mental health first before letting building companies cheap out with costs despite you're paying so much for it.

What about the person whose appliance set off the fire, who did a runner and didn't bother letting other residents know and calling 999 to call the fire brigade? Where is this person's name and face in the media, and their arrest?

I've also thought that. The council are responsible for the fire spreading inadequate brickwork or similar but what about the person who actually started the fire.

@@Raider577 exactly. The organisations mentioned by Charlene are definitely culpable but let's not forget that the fire started somewhere and that someone was responsible for the delays in any help coming and lives being saved because he did a runner

Where did you read that he did a runner? I think that is false. As far as I remember he called 999 and knocked on the doors of all the people on his floor to alert them to the fire.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that he & his family are apparently in a witness protection program, as they were concerns about his family’s safety and also the severity of his poor mental health from the guilt, following the tragedy.

You don't know their situation - "did a runner" they had to evacuate as there was a fire.... they may have tried to call someone but also they may not have had a mobile phone to call with and we don't know their mental state and situation.
The Grenfell Tower disaster happened because so many businesses in safety, building, management, fire brigade etc failed to protect everyone.
