- Today we take a look at one of the most brutal and blunt ways to attack a planet - kinetic bombardment - and specifically the De-Orbiting Kinetic Anti-emplacement Weapon (DOKAW) of Haruun Kal. I'll discuss all that and more on today's video!

Sorry for the re-upload, the video wasn't playing for mobile users... and that's like half of you. I've uploaded over 1,300 videos and this is the first time I've seen this lol.
As my man Isaac Arthur says: "There is no such thing as an unarmed spaceship." Want to destroy a planet's surface? Just fly by at high speed and drop your trash. 💥
Alternative title: "how to cook a planet by slapping it".
Yeah... The Expanse just do this better...
In the words of Cobra Commamder:
I’m heartened by the amount of CoD: Ghosts references in this comment section. Also, Space Battleship Yamato anyone? If y’all think normal kinetic bombardment is “brutal,” take a look at the planet bombs from that series. Massive meteors propelled at high speed that leave enough radiation to eventually kill everyone on the target planet. There’s also the Hyperion bomb from the same series, it kills all human life on the target planet but theoretically leaves industry and resources intact.
How do you think Grand Admiral Thrawn would do in the place of Commander Shepard in directing the war against the Reapers in the Mass Effect Universe?
I feel like a lot of science fiction works that include kinetic bombardment don't truly understand it. Basically every detail about the DOKAW doesn't make sense. If you de-orbited a projectile at a particular point of the orbit and had a guidance system at the back of the rod controlling fins, the aerodynamic forces would be sufficient to insure that you would be able to direct the projectile
The Centauri used something like this (mass drivers launching... something big and heavy) against the Narn homeworld in one episode of Babylon 5.
Wasn’t this the plot of COD: Ghosts?
I feel like a better way to kinetically bombard a planet is to use a carrier ship that has thousands of multi-ton rods in a hangar bay and approach the planet at a very high speed, and with heading centered on the target on the surface, then release the rods, change your heading and then decelerate to orbit or just stay away from the planet.
"A rod touches down eight times faster than a bullet and a force significantly greater than a nuclear warhead.
I recommend the Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell. The descriptions of how space combat would work (including kinetic bombardment) are extremely realistic
Sidious be like
I always assumed shields in SW were initially built specifically to stop kinetic objects given that many of the super ancient human weapons were kinetic, and thus plasma based weapons became more prominent especially once a lot of Ratakan tech was reverse engineered.
What was going on earlier but anyway always wanted to know the logistics of kinetic bombardment and thanks eck for the help earlier
Would one of the first examples in sci fi be the rocks from “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”.
In Babylon 5 they showed how destructive mass drivers can be.
Hey Eck can we see the Doggo freaking out ending again?
I wonder If Eck would ever look into Legend of Galactic Heros? cause Admiral Yang uses this on the Alliances civil war.
