I could actually see some use for the TIE tanks and AT-TP. With the proper tactics, that is. And, to be honest, if you're fielding vehicles like this, you're probably up the creek without a paddle.
Think echelon formation. Basically a flying "V". The 3 vehicles in the center, go straight, and the other vehicles on either side alternate inboard and outboard turns to provide interlocking fields of fire. Kinda like a Thatch weave, but backward.

I sort of could buy TIE Mauler as exotic anti-personel TIE variant used occasionally, because it didn't take much space if you already have TIE infrastructure. But TIE Tank is just plain dumb.

I see you used footage of the TIE MAULER from Empire at War, but neglect its true utility in that game: Running over swarms of infantry or civilian partisans with its treads. The guns are pretty much just there to fire at light buildings and rush artillery.

I don't think the Empire was really thinking about fighting conventional wars (like against the CIS) so didn't care about practical vehicles as long as they were aesthetically intimidating and symbolic of the empire. So using the mauler to run over enemies makes sense as opposed to actually using it to fight other tanks.

The AT-PT is something in a niche between the AT-RT and the AT-DP and largely redundant in its role, it's completely understandable why it would be on this list as it's really not filling a role that can't be taken by another vehicle.

    • @woofwoof6419

I can't help but think it would still be a decent replacement for the AT-RT. It's a lot shorter and possibly has an extra weapon or two. Not to mention the cockpit isn't open, compare that to the AT-RT which was basically giving a free kill to snipers.

I actually like the wave skimmer, I feel like it serves the purpose of a fast, easy to maintain scout on planets where the highest ranking Imperial Officer doesn't have the materials or manpower requisition for the more sought after equipment. They have to make due with B and C tier equipment and poor supply lines, so lower tech machinery would make more sense. I really wish they would go more into the Imperial Maritime Division. They apparently also have aircraft carriers. First time I believe I had ever seen a Maritime craft in Star Wars was probably the landing craft in Rogue Squadron during Defection at Corellia where they drop stormtroopers on the beach to invade the city. Always thought it was really cool.

The thing about the AT-PT is that it doesn't seem to be a frontline fighting vehicle. I think it's better suited as a light patrol or police/riot control vehicle. It's what you give to the units that aren't facing enough resistance to qualify issuing AT-STs.

    • @yagdtigercommander
      @yagdtigercommander 2 роки тому +8

Yah I see the AT-PT is more your back water everyday kind of policing vehicle that is the area for the empire. That may not always be in use or in combat but on stand by kind of deal. maybe not as well suited as an AT -ST for doing with full on rebel/ terrorist threats. But maybe to ensure that civil un rest just stays to peaceful protest demonstrations and don't turn into rioting and looting.
Or any crazed sports fans getting too excited by their teams victory or outage due their team losing the play offs or something of popular sport in star wars. so I am thinking AT-PT pilots don't get to do a whole lot lol and may even be part time operators as well.
It might be a little more interesting to be an AT-ST and AT-DP crew but I suspect they require a bit more experience to operate than an AT-PT so probably an AT- PT could be seen as starter vehicle for Empires mechanized forces or at least one of several options possible. As I have heard that AT-ATs require highly skilled members from the Storm Trooper core to operate or storm troopers that make up the mechanized branch of the imperial military. Even though it is one of the largest and slowest of the Empires Walkers it is considered a coveted position or Its like being apart of an elite tank crew or battalion that going to dominate the enemy on the battlefield at least propaganda wise.
Where as AT -PT might be considered something lowly imperial conscripts would operate. I am not saying one is better than other at least not every aspect. But AT-PTs kind of come across just your normal ever day imperial walker for policing duties. Like Imperial citizens might look out their windows and be like I guess they had to call in the AT-PT or PT's again to sub do the local gang fights at such and such district 3rd time this week. Where as AT-STs and AT -DPs get involved ands it like okay this seem be escalating rather quickly right now or well that escalated quickly.
AT-ATs show up and its like someone done fucked up and pissed off the Empire Royally looks like shits about about to get real ugly fast. lol XD.

The Tarkin Doctrine by itself makes sense, but to intimidate your weapons, ships and vehicles must still be at least reasonable effective in combat while looking intidimating. If they don't, it's not going to work.

According to the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels, the TIE Tank (or TIE Century as it was officially named) was made after the death of Grand Admiral Thrawn, which would suggest it was thought of as a sort of Volkspanzer of the imperial remnant, the last ditch effort to defend planets against the New Republic's rising power. It was explicitly designed to be cheap and easy to mass-produce, easy to repair, and quick to train the operators for. The book mentions that most of the on-board electronics were the same as in a bog standard TIE fighter, allowing flight school cadets to operate the thing with minimum preparation.

The TIE Mauler might have actually been a good tank if they had only swapped the top hatch for a turret thanks to having a field of view and looking to be agile enough that having the sides to the rear somewhat obstructed wouldn't matter much. A tank that's built with windows like that obviously isn't built for shooting outside the field of view anyway and there's a reason real life tanks have crews! Having someone both handle the driving AND the gun requires you to change tactics somewhat. A driver trying to drive forward and shoot backward at the same time is a recipe for getting stuck in a building or crashing into another tank!

The ATPT in rogue squadron was supposed to also appear on hoth in Battlefront 2(classic) it was scrapped because the map had issues with the mechanic of a vehicle crouching. The ATSTs in that map addressed this because they where smaller size wise

In a pre-Disney Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels, the description section of the entry where Eck got the diagram, it said the TIE tank was actually an attempt to make use of fighter corp training washouts. If you're going to sink that much time and effort in a pilot, have to use him somewhere. Thanks @DracoStarcloud for reminding me.

I know we're talking about Legends, but the aquatic vehicles only appeared in the comics, and the writers and artists took a lot of liberties in story plots and designs.

Oh boy, the All Terrain Ion Cannon stirring up all those memories of Kenner’s The Epic Continues proposed toyline. The Epic Continues could make for a neat video (or series of videos depending on how deep you want to go on some of the things). The internet must know of Mongo Beefhead
