Great video! Thank you for the test shots. I just recently switched to Sony and have been wondering when they’ll put out an updated 50mm lens, ideally a GM version... and here it is! Looks like a great lens, one that I now plan on buying.
Thanks for the review, Ted. For me, the 50 is it. I may have erred on the side of “too few” but I sold every other lens I had and now have only 50s. And brother, I keep going back to look at that gas meter. Excellent!

A very desirable lens for portraitists, street and travel photographers. I wonder if it would look huge on a a7C and if the images on this smaller body with lower resolution would benefit from such a good lens (that’s the combo I am considering)
Ted I'm interested in the Aperture ring precision among these three. When they are configured to clickless, how precise do they become?
Are they limited to 1/3 stop? Are they limited to 1/4 stop? 1/6 stop? 1/8 stop? etc.
This might be valuable to know when you adjust aperture during a video.
the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 also has a concave front element.
As well as the APS-C 35mm F1.8 OSS from Sony.
That was my first Sony lens. An absolute beaut!

Can you compare the light transmission between these two lenses? In other words how much lighter is the 1.2? Not all lenses have the same T-Stop as the F-Stop. I'm asking for low light. The 50mm 1.4 has a t-Stop of t-1.6. I am hoping the 50mm 1.2 is closer to t-1.2
I hope this means we can expect a Sony GM 85mm F1.2, before too long. The F1.4 is great, but it was released five years go - and Sony's lens tech is improving all the time, as we saw with the new 35mm F1.4.

Putting autofocus and price on the side, the real match or comparison test is with a Summilux 50 or even with Noctilux 50, isn’t it ?
Hey Ted, have you noticed the electronic first curtain shutter eats the bottom half of the bokeh "circle" from around 1/1000 sec and faster? For those images I always switch back to full mechanical shutter. See 3:16 for reference. Manny Ortiz has a video on the topic. Really weird issue.

How does this compare to the Sigma f/1.4? There is an extra glass in the 50mm GM which should make it more milky?
I own a Sony system right now (with some gm lenses, they get better and better). But would you mind giving your thoughts on long-term reliability and build quality of the modern gm lenses (they did some small build quality improvements like better declickable aperture etc) vs the canon rf lenses? It seems to me that the difference might not be ground breaking but canon still has the better build quality.
Some remarks regarding what you said in the video:
-> The lense features 4 linear focus motors (each one separate sensor which work electronically together) in 2 separate groups using a floating lense design (not 2 motors like you said)
-> only one 55mm sony was released, not several ones
-> F1.2 is half a stop faster, not 1/3, in the specific case of this lense the entrance pupil is 17% bigger and the front glass area is 40% bigger than a 1.4 version would be

Thank you for the nice intro. TBH I’m not much interested in how much better this glass is than Nikon, or Canon 50’s, as I am a Sony shooter anyways, however understanding the technical and practical differences compared to other Sony 50-55mm glass would be a great help maintaining or chilling my desire for spending way too much on a used to be kit type of lens.
It would be interesting to see how it compares to Fujifilm XF33F1.4 LM WR - how much better is it at almost 3 times the cost and twice the weight?

I would like to see the comparison between Nikon, Canon and Sony 50 1.2 things like sharpness, Light Transmission (Approx T stop..kind of which is brighter at same settings at 1.2), bokeh, flare and aberrations
the quiet and way faster focus motor in this makes it better by default, as focusing at f1.2 is challenging

Thanks for the review you asked about questions. I was wondering about the "Zeiss 3D POP" micro contrast etc. one of the reasons I bought the Zony was it has some of that heritage. Putting down that amount of money did not sting as much as it did have a Planar look. I was hoping in your full review you could go into that a little bit. Thanks
I went through a Zeiss phase. What wonderful lenses they were, compared to what had been the norm before! Micro contrast is the simultaneous presence of sharpness, low chromatic aberration, and low flare. Wonderful, wonderful stuff compared to what had come before. Still, this new Sony glass (and perhaps Canon) is something well beyond that. It's an amazing world we live in right now!
@@stuartschaffner9744 Thanks for the reply well I think like a lot of photographers who own the Sony 50 1.4 its going to be hard to justify the upgrade. I also own the Voigtlander 65mm f2 apo if I want the ultimate in image quality. Looks like the 50 1.2 would be a way to get it all in one package. It is a great time to get into emount that is for sure.
Sample photos were great. As you do your tests, could you please include a reason(s) an enthusiast should buy it to replace his Rokkor 1.2 & 1.4 lenses on K&F Concept adapter? Reason(s) suitable for presentation to said enthusiast's wife preferred. Much thanks for informative videos...
Yes Ted, I’ll await with much anticipation the head to head with Canon & Nikon offerings. Please try to do same shot/framing side by sides at 100-200% for us pixel 👀😆 Also very interested in colour/tones each produces

Great channel. I am so hard decision which one should i buy between New Sony fe 2424-70mm f2.8 Vs Sony fe 50mm f1.2 GM? Prime is great aperture and image quality and 24-70mm is versatile?
Trust me you will be much happier with the 50mm 1.2 and zoom with your feet

This is great, Sony is getting back to lenses like in the film days. Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 and 50mm f/1.2L but also the many f/1.4, f/1.8 and f/2. When I bought my A7S ('14) I used with an adapter all my Canon FD lenses for about two years, I was saving for future Sony lenses. Yes manual everything but also sharp. Have you ever thought of doing a compare of the FD to the FE lenses, just for grins? Good at night Yes, did my first lunar eclipse (blue hour) in 2014 with a Canon telephoto FD 80-200mm f/4 at 100mm with adapter 10-08-2014 Jekyll Island Ga. to the west.

So much would depend on how big your tattoos were and a number of other individual issues. Could you rent or borrow some lenses and check all this out?

This is actually a 50mm I will purchase! However, if the Mark II version of the 85mm f1.4 comes out soon with the same focusing motors and the nano-coating, I might wait. Sony’s GM lenses are definitely a step up from both Nikon’s and Canon’s pro lines. If I could afford them I would have a copy of each.

50mm is a wonderful focal lenght, I agree. The question is: do you really need the f/1.2 aperture?
50mm @1.2 is so dope though man 👍🏻 Not everyone needs or wants it, especially with the price tags.

Those of a certain age learned the hobby/trade using 50MM lenses but the lenses then didn't compare to this latest crop which are truly excellent.
I believe that I learned on super-exciting new "coated" lenses. Linear versus rotational focus motors -- huh? What do you mean, motors? Lots of blur and chromatic aberration in the corners, of course. And, of course, flare! Lots and lots of flare. Today's lenses are miracles, at least for someone like me.
I think I am going to stick with the Sony 55mm F1.8. It also has a concave front element btw. Just prefer the size and weight.

Love the 55 f/1.8 Zeiss lens but it has some Longitudinal chromatic abberation I don't like. Although this new GM seems to have none of that or very little it's much bigger and heavier than the sel55f18. So it would be a difficult choice if I had the money.

Me too. I just love my 55. It have just 2 issues. Onion ring rings and LoCa. But stopped down for landscaping, og for portraits it's a perfect lens.

For me f/3.5 is wide open, mostly I shoot at f/8 or f/11. Paper-thin DOF is a detriment for my advertising and editorial work.
A good test, of a lens I'll never need. Will Sony ever make a Tilt & Shift lens, something that I often use?
Nikon never said the Sony mount was too small. it was the F Mount they were referring to and it was too small for mirror reflex registration distancing. hence why they came up with the z mount, which also allows them to push towards medium format, or close anyway, without a new mount 😉
I'm thinking this mount is still a lot bigger than the F mount because it's flange distance is smaller

So care to set an expectation on when the 50/1.2 lens comparison video will be available for our viewing. Got the 35/1.4 GM this pas week and really happy with it. Delivery of the 50/1.2 GM is now a month away for us normal people so I am trying to determine if I want to keep my pre-order in and sell my 50/1.4 ZA. Thank you and take care.

Kamlan 28mm f/1.4 has concave front element as well. Pretty decent apsc lens.

Back in the analog days from the 1970´s to the 1990/2000´s a 50mm was just a "cheap" kit lens that almost everyone got together with the camera, but only a very few ever used a 50mm, I think (and many others) that lenses from 45mm and every lens shorter plus every lenses from 55mm and longer are the best choice ! I like the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 because it is so light and compact, I want it in a new and better optical version (an aperture ring will be very nice). Even better will a 60mm 2.0 be !
Looks to be a well good 50mm - I however still don't consider the bokeh to be a patch on another little known Sony; the 135mm f/2.8 STF - formerly made by Minolta and re-badged by Sony when they bought out Minolta. Its a manual focus lens, and requires either an A-mount Sony or E-mount with adaptor, and its coatings are not as good as modern GM lenses, but it can produce lovely shots with the smoothest creamiest bokeh.
I heard that it is really a 47mm lens and not a 50mm 1.2. Is that correct?
The 55 sonnar e mount has a concave front element.

Funny how Sony carried on Minolta’s nomenclature of the G series. Minoltas best lenses were called G lenses.

The G moniker carried over when Sony took over the A-mount from Minolta and rebranded a lot of their lenses.

Want it! :D so sad I can't afford it. I'm stuck with my 24-70 Z2 which is a ZA and the image quality issues mentioned here are very present.
