  • Pampered athletes, rich politicians, powerful businesses: everyone thinks they’re an underdog, even the obviously privileged. Lou explains why we’re so susceptible to the underdog effect and how it could damage democracy.

      I was just trying to peg which way this video leaned politically, because... what UA-cam channel doesn't favor one side a little more than the other?
      The answer is this video, this video doesn't appear to favor either side in any way that I can discern.

    Good video. I agree that the underdog rally is built into the American psychology. Especially in regards to the view of the revolution war and even the civil war.
    You can also look at the southerners rally around the confederate flag. People not from the southern states, tend to view the flag as a symbol of racism while, those in the south see the flag representing the underdog, the rebel having to fight against the odds. Again, part of the American psychology.

      And everyone is a victim of something and could easily relate to underdogs. This problem is far beyond how politicians display themselves.
      This is a human problem that people aren’t able to see the world for what it really is without saying ‘woe is me’ and comparing their victim status

    When you come from working class then you are an underdog in this system stacked against working people and their families. Underdogs do exist because the system works that way and if you want to actually tackle “the underdogs” in politics then you stop big political donations from corporations and lobbies influence and level the playing field so it’s an actual battle of ideas and not just who stacks more cash from their rich donors.

    Very good points and great presentation. The ending about the need to focus on visions rather than past hardships was brilliant.
    However, cheering for the underdog is not the whole story. We also like when winners keep winning. It's true both in sports (federer, messi, lebron - all have tones of fans) and in politics (obama's reelection; Clinton's win over Sanders).

    We need a video on 3rd party and independents and what needs to be done to open up competition and end the two party domination!
    Also, make the Election Campaigns much shorter. Sick and tired of always being in constant campaign mode! Most major democracies go from start to finish in just a few months. 🇨🇦 election that will take place this fall usually go from start to finish in about 3-4 months. Maybe they is a way that the two topics could blend together as well !

      Progressives and justice democrats like AOC and Bernie Sanders are already doing this by not taking any corporate sponsorships. Third party shenanigans is just the wrong move, the country is in such a partisan divided place. We should reform the corrupt parties. Independents and alternative parties have never won in history and probably will never win. Progressive movements are having a huge impact

    Is the underdog label similar to victim culture

    • @LouisFoglia
      @LouisFoglia 5 років тому +16

      Funny - The first draft of the script had three to four minutes making the connection to victim culture. I even interviewed an expert on victim culture. The basic idea is that we've created this norm - especially on college campuses and on social media - that we have to take every complaint seriously. We have to be respectful of people airing grievances, even if they are absurd. And therefore, if people want to be listened to and taken seriously, they have to learn how to complain effectively. They have to learn to play the victim. And there's a thin line between playing the victim and playing the underdog. Ultimately the section was really clunky and it made the piece too long, so I decided to take it out and stay a little more focused. Hopefully I'll return to it though as a separate piece.

    It’s too bad we think with our heart and not with our brains when it comes to politics. I’m concerned with a person who’s stable, well informed with both national and world wide issues, served his or her country, but nowadays that’s a rare option due to an all volunteer military force. I’d rather have someone who’s worked the majority of their life in public service and is not just a business mogul. This country is a not for profit organization, something a businessman can’t understand. They must be able to provide what we need through realistic goals and programs. We need someone who is humble and can admit they don’t know everything and that’s why he or she has a staff of “experts to help make the right decisions. Currently we have none of that, we currently have a broken government who’s being held hostage by an administration who’s narrow focus is on a “wall” that would be paid for by no one else but the tax payers of this country. Doesn’t it make you wonder how those people who have orchestrated a government shutdown are coping with working without a paycheck? I’m being sarcastic, since most of the current administration are millionaires or even billionaires who have no more a connection or concern for the average person in this country.

    interesting topic. the underdog play is definitely common in politics. you said "anytime a politician is talking about their disadvantages, .. they are not talking about their vision." but wouldn't you agree that a candidates disadvantages and struggles shape their vision? For example, Ocasio, who you brought up, has tweeted how she was working in a bar a year ago, and there have been plenty of stories and talk about her financial struggles when moving to DC, but don't those things means she understands the struggles of who she represents? and that will definitely shape her vision and policy decisions. in my mind a persons past experiences and their vision shouldn't be separated because they go hand in hand. my two cents. good video
