Look, I'm a toyota fan also, but bro, you cannot deny Toyota tried to cheap their way out of fixing that engine. The short block "fix" got me pissed off when they did that the first time. Glad to see they finally realized long blocks are the way to go, but come on Toyota. Should've did that long ago.

The big issue is the overall cost of the engine. I paid $48k for a 2024 last year…the engine repair is approx $35-$40k. That does not bode well for future value when the vehicle is out of warranty. Maybe this flood of new long blocks will keep the cost down for future repairs, but I doubt that…and having just had the “front active spoiler” motor repaired today under warranty at 20K miles (an $800 part and 5 hours labor), I’m thinking this is my last Toyota truck (I’ve had 4 and this is truly a hard pill to swallow).

@jeanclaude7018 I am willing to say that it’s not of its debris. If it was debris technically wouldn’t it slowly fail overtime and not just grenade. The grenading is a catastrophic failure in the internals of the engine. Unless there are nuts and bolts in the cylinder heads or camshafts 😂😂

    • @BorderTurrets

@jeanclaude7018 If debris is in the block the oil filter will catch it after it’s already damaged the engine components.

    hot take
these new engines aren't actually a fix
the problem lies in too high horsepower per cylinder in a vehicle meant as an everyday day driver with average everyday driver maintenance intervals (as in too long) and average everyday driving stop n go, not always getting up to operating temp type driving supplied with 0w-20 engine oil in what is essentially a high performance engine. Mopar is going to have issues with their new turbo 6 as well

Don't think the stuff had hit the fan yet over this engine recall.
One of the reasons I bought a RAV4 was precisely because, unlike the Honda CR-V it does not have a turbo.

This is much better than their original "Fix" for the engine failures, in theory this won't be any different than the original engine other than the fact that they are removing the possibility of reusing bad parts/bad oil in turbos/lines etc. IF Debris was in fact the cause of the original failures, then this should in theory solve the issue...provided the debris is no longer the cause :). If the debris hypothesis is right or the bearings are getting wiped out either way all that metal material is going through the oil which includes going through the turbos and the head. Could easily be stuck in there after a short block and damaged something else.

Not all will fail, Toyota will only proactively replace those that fall under the recall notice, if you didn't get a notice then you won't get a new crate engine (yet). You might get a new crate engine if yours fails under warranty and you aren't on the recall...time will tell how they handle each different situation. If the warranty expires and you aren't on the recall list, I'm guessing you will be expected to cover the ~$30,000 engine replacement bill unless you hire a lawyer.

According to the original recall, it only affected 2022-2023 (non-hybrid), but most people know it's the same engine in the hybrids and hybrids have failed as well. Toyota doesn't recall the hybrids because it's not a "safety concern" when the engine fails in those, because the electric hybrid motor can move them off the road. There have been reports of 2024s also dying, however a lot fewer than 2022-2023 so far.
