I have always thought Age of Ultron was underappreciated. It had an impossible task and managed to introduce interesting new characters while still demonstrating the growing friendships of the original Avengers. It certainly isn't a perfect movie, but there are so many small moments within the movie that are perfect...

I enjoyed this film. I don't know why people hated it. Whedon did a good job in fleshing out the old Characters. My only gripe is that he is not as good at introducing new characters like Wanda and Vision. Russo's did way better at character intros in Civil War. Black Panther and Spiderman's intros were stellar, and yet we got more on the old characters also.

It has really bad audio mixing. The levels are all weird. It feels kinda cheap. I think that's the actual reason people thought it wasn't good. The fact it's using the wrong composer with the bad mix just makes the thing feel a bit off. If we got the Joss Whedon 3 hour cut, with better audio mixing and Alan Silvestri rescoring it I think it could dethrone Guardians 2 as the best film in the MCU.

The Thor sequences were not "studio mandated" - that is a widely held misconception caused by some terrible reporting by one of the various film news sites which then got repeated endlessly as though it were fact. The story they ran claimed that the studio forced Whedon to put in the Thor/Infinity Stone subplot, and threatened to cut out the farm sequence if he didn't. This was sourced to an interview Whedon did on The Empire Film Podcast, but if you listen to the actual interview (and you can, it's still up as an episode of the podcast) you will find that what was reported gets the story pretty much completely backwards.
Whedon himself wrote a *longer*, more involved version of the Thor subplot which served the same purpose as what ended up in the film - because *he* thought it was important to explain the Infinity Stones, not just to set up future movies, but to explain why the Mind Stone was going to bring Vision to life later within this same movie.
The only thing the studio was mandating was that the run-time of the movie be shortened. So they wanted to either cut the farm sequence or cut the Thor sequence (because apparently they didn't care if it set up future movies). Ultimately, Whedon agreed to cut the Thor sequence; but then the editor pointed out that there was a reason it was in there in the first place (explain Vision), so they (Whedon and the editor) cobbled together the shorter, more perfunctory version that ended up in the film.
I don't know if this bad reporting was an intentional misread for clickbait, or just an honest mistake due to confirmation bias. The narrative about Marvel at the time was that they were meddling with their filmmakers, insisting that there be connective tissue between the movies to the detriment of the individual films. Remember, this was around the time Edgar Wright left Ant-Man, and the speculation was that it happened because he was being forced to include things that would connect it to other Marvel movies - of course, we've never found out what exactly caused Wright to leave, and what few connections to other Marvel movies there are in the final version of Ant-Man does not impair that movie at all. But, unfortunately, narratives like that get started even without actual evidence, and cause people to believe things that aren't true.

I would say main issues had to do with Ultron's characterization.. he acted a bit like a joke which is not in line with his portrayal in the comics (or a machine in general), the way he was defeated and also the final battle with all those minions was too similar to what we had seen during the first Avengers movie. It also didn't help how Quicksilver was used and disposed of... I mean, I'm all for characters dying and showing that there are high stakes but we hardly knew him yet so there was no investment in the character and his set of powers (being a speedster) meant he should easily avoid those bullets...

I keep saying AoU was so slept on. This movie was so important leading up to A4, the lifting mjolnir scene, the visions, the ''we'll do that together too'' scene was so powerful, the friction between Tony and Steve's relationship leading up to the Avengers breaking up, and Cap teasing the biggest line drop in the whole MCU at the end, finally coming to fruition in Endgame. Overall idk why people didnt like this movie, I didn't think it was better than 2012's Avengers at the time but i did enjoy it alot either way. The action, pacing, and storytelling was good. In the promotional marketing you had a Asgardian witch that was part of Thor's dream that got cut out of the final version of the film. I loved the Angel easter egg with the Wolf, Ram and Hart referencing the evil Law firm from Angel tv show Wolfram & Hart. I think Whedon wanted to expand on Wolf, Ram and Hart but due to the length of the film he had to cut it down.

To be honest, it took until this video to finally understand why Steve Rogers was Unworthy of wielding Mjolnir...
And like most of the comments, Ultron could have been AMAZING had he been as menacing and intimidating as he was in the trailers... oh well :/ still like this movie though.

Actually, after rewatching Age of Ultron, I appreciated it a lot more and it’s one of my favorites of the MCU. Also it’s kinda like the golden age of the Avengers. No one is under mind control or out too long, and they all work together from the beginning (though there are disagreements of course)

I totally agree. However that’s a lot to juggle in one movie. Adding that in with a plot about the inevitable death of humanity and the implications of AI is a lot to cover. Obviously not Whedon’s fault due to the studio intervention but I think that the script needed much more narrative focus. Either go less plot heavy (with ultron and his plan with vision and the stones being scrapped for something more small scale and less time consuming) and let the characters carry the film or tighten the character arcs and focus on plot. When you try to do all of them it can get confusing for the audience and they won’t retain the great ideas presented to them which is pretty much what happened.

This movie to me is the most “rewatchable” out of all of them. I don’t know why, but sometimes I just feel like watching it. I honestly love this movie, the only reason people didn’t like it was really just because of the false advertising of Ultron. Relative to the rest of the MCU villains, Ultron kinda just stays in the middle, much higher than yellow jacket and the dark elf guy from Thor, but a lot lower than Thanos. I also feel that if he was made to be much darker like the trailer suggested, the rest of the movie would feel a lot different, and I don’t know if that would have made him a better villain. Over all, I’d rate this movie a good 7/10. Great setup for future films, great character development, great interaction between character, kinda meh villain, meh introduction of vision and quicksilver but good introduction of scarlet witch. (This is really long but hey you asked for our opinion, that’s mine)

I know this movie isnt perfect. Like Natasha's and Bruce romance coming out of no where. Ultron being underused as a villain and all the quipping but other than that I really enjoy it. Oh and after Endgame its even better in retrospect cuz Endgame pays off what Ultron set up.

Definitely in my top 10 MCU movies, very underrated - I remember when I saw it when I was a kid I thought the movie was better then the first one and that Ultron was better then Loki; I know now I was wrong, but I still love this movie.

i became so jaded about this movie, it made me nervous about the MCU for a while after it released. however, i think it has been improved by the films that have followed it, because it set up so much vital information. civil war, ragnarok, and black panther are all made more interesting for what age of ultron set up for them. it’s definitely towards the bottom of my MCU ranking, but i am still very grateful for what it set up and also for giving us some amazing character moments (the party sequence, the farmhouse, etc...)

You’ve just laid out the biggest reason why I like this movie more than the 1st Avengers movie. While the 1st movie may have more memorable actions sequences and spectacle (though the opening and closing action scenes in Age of Ultron I would argue are on the same level as the ones from the first movie), I think that AoU had much better character depth and development for most of the characters than the 1st Avengers film ever had. It actually shows how they interact and bounce off of each other rather than having them argue for a majority of the time they are together. The characters are just better overall in AoU than they were in The Avengers

Honestly I’ve never understood the hate on this one. It’s got issues for sure, but I think we just a film, it’s the better of the Whedon Avengers films. (Side note: if the Guardians or Spider-Man made it into this one then I feel like people would like it better based on the wow factor from the first film)

It's definitely my least favorite avengers movie but it's not a bad movie. Yes, the Black Widow/Hulk romance should have been removed entirely. Yes, the Thor magic jacuzzi scene also should have been removed entirely. And yes Ultron should have been fleshed out more. But there's still tons of good stuff in it.

I think it would be cool to see you do a Film Negative installment on either (preferably both, though separately) Star Wars Episode I and Episode II. As that rare older Star Wars fan that enjoys the Prequels (like Kevin Smith), I think there is plenty for you to work with in creating a video on either of these films; Episode III would be good too, but I think it would be MUCH easier than the other two.

I was moderately disappointed with Ultron, really I expected Ultron to be more of a villain like Thanos, and for him to last two movies.
Outside of Ultron as a character, I still think the second Avengers movie is in many ways better than the third (yes, I like Age of Ultron more than Infinity War, or End Game). The introduction of Scarlett Witch and Vision was really good, and I LOVE the Thor and Mjolnir play in this movie.
It really, really sucks that this is the ONLY TIME we get to see Vision at full power. During the Vision vs. Wanda conflict in Civil War I can only assume he was holding back, and Transforming him into nothing but a MacGuffin in Infinity war was a real let down. On the plus side, even if he did get Fridged it was effective at making Wanda one of the best characters in Infinity War.

Never understood all the hate this movie received...especially considering all of the important foreshadowing it contains. Not saying it was perfect, but anyone who has been paying even relatively close attention since 2015 should realize just how important the film truly is, and has always been. Tony’s and Thor’s visions both...you always knew they were going to be pivotal. Now looking back, of course, we realize Cap’s was as well! Christopher Markus said they started writing both Endgame and Infinity War way back in 2015...now it seems they probably used Age of Ultron as a springboard for those certain key moments. Brilliant work, as always, Marvel. 👍👍 Can’t want to see where they go next...
