Mount Hood: Circumnavigating Hood and Summiting

  • The Mount Hood area is awesome. Lots of trails, trees, volcano stuff and endless natural floral arrangements. What starts out as a reported 38 miles run turns into a 44.5 mile beast with 11,000 ft of uphill, a lot of it on pumicite. With the memory of the run still making my legs throb I ascend the heights of Hood. I was warned several times about the thawing rocks breaking loose and charging down at me Indian Jones like, but the danger never materialized.

Absolutely insane! For perspective - I’m a local pdx native - this loop trail is recommended as a 3 night 4 day backpacking trip! You did 40ish miles in under 11 hours, epic!!

Daniel Cordova no kidding. I can clear it in 48 without too much fuss, but a single day is crazy.
To follow up with a summit the next morning is incredible.

    Stupid mountain!
You’re absolutely insane; incredibly driven and outrageously inspiring.
I was forming the question in my mind if you took a silent partner along during these epic runs
to help set up the cameras - just as the handful of clips appear showing you setting down and picking up
    the bloody things. Stupid question!
You have one of the truly very best UA-cam channels going. They’re total pleasure to watch.

I’m just curious though why you’re always running through the trails and doing it as fast as possible? Is it a time thing or is that just how you prefer to knock the trails out? Brother, I feel your pain. Wait until you go to Japan and do the Diakiretto arete in Kamikochi. I'm not in your class, so I tried to avoid it but I took the wrong turn. Japanese trails are all designed by the Marquis de Sade. After two of those heart breaking dips, and a via ferata that was about 200' of aluminum ladders (I had the thought, shouldn't I be carrying a section of rain gutter?) So I went through two of these dips, and stood at one spot for about ten minutes trying to figure out why WHY? there wasn't a mountain hut there. Then laboriously climbing back up out of the saddle.... only to find another saddle. There was this tower with this deep groove. It looked so completely awful and impossible I was convinced that that had to be the trail. I just stood there wondering if I couldn't just somehow spend the next week or so right where I was... Then I noticed some climbers along a not too difficult arete to the left. And the hand holds in the rocks? Never reposition deeper into the same hole, there's another one fight next to it. That hissing coming out of about every 20th handhold? You just woke up a bat. You and Blake would eat this route for breakfast, but you'll be shaking your head at people wearing cotton gloves while doing rock climbing moves.

Mark Taylor won’t speak for him, but I did the summit recently and the big danger in summer is rock falls.
But he did it right, and was well below 10,000 by the time the worst hit. Being up in the crater at 1pm is a different story though! A steady rain of microwave sized rocks at that point.

Danny, I really dig your videos. Production quality and comedy are stellar. 2 questions:
    1) where can I purchase the mediocre amateur cap you sport in some videos?
    2) as for this video and the circumnavigation, it’s awesome. Have you heard of the wonderland trail around Rainier? I live right at the foothills and it’s a sweet trail and difficult AF (93 miles, 24k elevation) if you’re trying to get done in a short time frame.
Hopefully you check the comments. And srsly, the hat, TAKE MY MONEY.
