    I've dreamed of standing on the summit of Mt. Hood since I first laid eyes on it as I thru hiked the Pacific Crest Trail back in 2020. This towering active volcano is the tallest peak in Oregon and dominates the Portland skyline. I've attempted the summit in the past but was repeatedly turned away by treacherous conditions--but this time I successfully bagged the peak! Our climbing route started at Timberline Ski Lodge at 6000 feet, up the Palmer Glacier to the top of the lifts, into the steaming Crater also known as the Devil's Kitchen, up the spine of the Hog's Back, through the near vertical ice of the Pearly Gates, and finally onto the Summit at 11,249 feet. After soaking in the glory, we down climbed the chute and skied all the way back down to the car, completely exhausted and ready for a beer.

    Thanks for this excellent video. I’ll be skiing the Palmer field tomorrow July 1, 2023, my first off season ski adventure.

    From the Summit, they always show the view looking West, but it would be neat to see an Eastward view, or a view Northward across the Columbia.

    Nice job, I hiked the PCT back in 2019 and got up Hood by the North Face last January, so similar trajectory. Planning on skiing South Side with a friend this weekend so this was really helpful. If you’re ever looking for a adventure buddy in the PNW hit me up!

    Thinking of making this climb-how difficult would you say the ski down is? I’m comfortable pretty much anywhere on meadows, and what I saw in your vid looked pretty unstressful. And what time of year was this? Thanks

      If you’re comfortable skiing Heather Canyon then this will probably be fine for you. The ski down from Devil’s kitchen is moderately steep but wide open and uniform so it’s a bit more forgiving. The ski from the summit down the Old Chute to Devils Kitchen however is much more steep and exposed. That’s a no fall zone. The hardest part about skiing anywhere on the upper mountain is questionable snow quality due to wind and ice. This was late April 2022. Enjoy the climb!

      Thanks! I did end up down climbing the Left Gate. Half of my group chose that route, and half decided to ski down the Old Chute!

    Did you rope up for the glacier?

    • @RadishUprooted
      @RadishUprooted  Рік тому

      Nope, it’s not necessary to rope up for the south side climbs on Mount Hood. The glaciers on that side of the mountain aren’t heavily crevassed, which is why you would normally want to rope up. There is one crevasse at the top of the Hogsback, but it’s fairly obvious so just be careful. Some parties opt to rope up for the pearly gates or old chute due to the steep snow and ice, but unless you’re setting a running belay or a fixed line, it is counter productive and actually pretty dangerous to do so.

    What time of year was this? Thinking about a send this weekend

    • @RadishUprooted
      @RadishUprooted  2 місяці тому

      This was April of 2022. I’d recommend serious caution this weekend with the massive snow accumulation and high wind speeds of the past week, followed by extreme warming this weekend. Check the latest reports-I saw multiple crowns on the West Crater Rim and in the White River Canyon yesterday. But make your own risk evaluation and be safe!
