You came in budget except for that pesky customer generated change order, so cost plus, and every job worth doing requires a new tool! I saw your comment below about all the camera work, so finished in 2 weeks is still impressive. All in all a great project, nice video, you won the game.

Given the way you concisely told me all the things about scribing I have been trying to learn for quite some time has made this video something I will reference back to plenty in the future. I am here for the "hack" tips!
10:30 - would it be better to scribe and cut the back edge of the template before scribing the sides? That way your scribe line on the sides isn’t offset by the amount you cut off the back
Hacks like us need the sarcasm to fill in the empty void of our souls. Awesome project and video. Loved the tips but the quote of "rest with your hands" rings so true. By far the most eloquent description of the hobby that has certainly improved my life for the same reasons you mentioned. Thank you.
I love your videos, and a hack tip is probably worth two pro tips on any given day. The pro tip will use a tool I don’t have on a material I will never be able to afford. 😂🎉😂
non-pro tip for that scribing tool insert thingy you made for your pencil, for those of us without 3d printers to make a thing, just buy a triangle pencil grip. we used them in elementary school to encourage us to hold the pencil the way the teacher wanted, and it seems they might help with the scribe marks when there's no 3d printer to make your own.
I'd say you came in underbudget but overtime. Those lamps look like accessories that go on the bookcase. As for the new tool, in tool math, if you do only 9 more projects with it, then it's just $42 dollars this time. If you include the time saved to be back with your family, priceless.
Baltic Birch (BB/BB or BB/CP) is imported plywood. What you're referring to is normally called imported C-2 Birch. My current employer doesn't sell to the general public or even contractors. You have to have a stand alone shop space, a garage doesn't count. My previous employer sold to anyone, it's usually called cash, or will call sales. Neither one has much of an online presence.

Not a hack Drew! The minister struggle with books is real, especially if you have family or friends as ministers who decide to offload their books on you. I have quite a few in my office and still have boxes in the attic.
I would be interested in seeing what you think your time is worth on this project, minus all the camera setup and such, i.e. How many actual hours do you think you spent on the build? I'm of the opinion that you should count that when making the comparison--because they certainly weren't charging you just for materials.
@@wittworks I’ve just refurbed my kitchen as a complete noob - including making a sink carcass out of ply as in your video - and I reckon at least an extra day, and probably two, watching how to set up and use these shiny new tools videos is needed. Also, measurements. Lots of checking measurements. Immensely satisfying when you’ve finished. And you get to keep the tools.
17:45 Literally me. I would take it a step further though and first make a big dent with the bit and at the second attempt I would end up turning that bit into a cutter and create a 1 inch scar on that sidepanel 😭😭😭😂 Also; Youre a "hack" that 100% made it way cheaper and it looks amazing! The doors being as cheap as you listed was really interesting since im considering changing my cabinetdoors in my kitchen! Cheers
Hack. I’m one of those Guys that builds his Own doors , drawers and drawer faces. I do it bc it takes me a day to an entire kitchen and to order real maple finger jointed drawer cost $125 per drawer including undermount slides. I charge $200 a drawer and it cost me $50
Hack! Great video but I have NO tools and NO skills so I guess what I will do is take screen shots of your build to get an accurate quote! Dream bookcase.
I wonder if it's feasible to stack up the doors when drilling holes for the pulls to avoid them being at slightly different heights. I know there's a jig for this, but, in the absence of that, could holes be drilled in one door and then that be used as the template for the pull holes in all the other doors? I'd be driven insane by the handles not all lining up. I think I'd be annoyed by seeing seams, too, through the paint... but then I'm such a hack that i won't even start a project for lack of space and tools, nor the willingness to procure materials.
I bought my own flat just a month ago and I'm looking at making a similar bookcase. If a hack like you can make one then an absolute amateur as I should have no issues either 😉 Any chance you could tell me the width and depth of your bookcase elements?
Hack winner! Still way under cost from the pro quotes and you didn’t wait another year. I agree with other comments that the paint tool shouldn’t be in the project budget. It’s an investment in hating painting less. Thanks for another fun video.
Great job on the project. A couple tip's I learned using thousands of pocket holes. I always start each pocket hole in reverse to help bite into the adjoining piece. This gives the screw a guide point and less a chance of wandering in an unwanted direction, which can cause the material to slide one way or another when torqued. One other tip, use the drill/driver and adjust your clutch to around 11~14 depending on the material you are screwing to. This helps with the material slipping or pulling in any one direction unattended by the overdriving force the impact will apply to the fastener in the material. Hope any of it helps or makes sense.
If you were quoted $16k for the shelves you would need to earn $21k assuming you were in a 25% tax bracket to end up with $16k. Even greater savings and a video out of this. As usual well done. Thank you.
You know what’s funny? You mentioned the places not wanting to sell to consumers and many places being happy to take your money. I’ve had sales people talk to me like I add no value to them. Honestly pretty rude when they know I’m not buying bunks. That’s OKAY because I found the place that was worth giving my business eventually! Here in the Chicago area? I’ve found IMPORT C2 Birch from plywood suppliers is STILL around $70 a sheet at least. Best price I could find in my area was $62 a sheet of C2 BUT it’s beautiful and is like, 9 ply I think? Without looking haha It’s a few more than the Birch at the Big box store. That’s 3 sheets for the price of 2 from the big box store and this stuff is DEFINITELY much superior to what I have bought from like, Menards and Lowe’s. If you’re in the Chicagoland area and have a good supplier though, I’m all ears. I went to Heller Lumber Co. They offered a rip cut service for I think 0.50 a cut? May be wrong. I’d have to check my invoice. You can buy a few cuts to spec to get the material to fit in your vehicle more easily though.
Yeah the prices have gotten out of control. In my experience I’d take higher plys with C grade faces all day. Usually there’s no voids and it’s more stable. But most of my plywood hack projects are painted so I don’t care much about face quality.
@@wittworks I also think if you’re buying from big box you probably don’t know the difference in face grade anyways. Or you’re severely limited for local options. They called it paint grade at the place I ended up buying from. When I went shopping in person to some of these more specialized suppliers was the first time I was like, “yeah, this low grade is better than what I’ve been buying anyways.” Haha This paint grade birch would look better with clear than what I’ve gotten from the big box.
lol one year?… trust me don’t feel bad. We’re 2yrs and I still have stuff in house we moved out of. lol but got a deadline to get it done need to sell house to finish my new workshop.

I'm of the opinion that you should count that when making the comparison--because they certainly weren't charging you just for materials.
about 40-50 hours without the camera involved.
@@wittworks That's still a heck of a lot lower price than $12,000

Literally me. I would take it a step further though and first make a big dent with the bit and at the second attempt I would end up turning that bit into a cutter and create a 1 inch scar on that sidepanel 😭😭😭😂
Also; Youre a "hack" that 100% made it way cheaper and it looks amazing!
Dream bookcase.
you put bonhoeffer on the top shelf…where’s the rockler library ladder kit (so you can reach aforementioned bonhoeffer)???😊
good eye
I wonder if it's feasible to stack up the doors when drilling holes for the pulls to avoid them being at slightly different heights. I know there's a jig for this, but, in the absence of that, could holes be drilled in one door and then that be used as the template for the pull holes in all the other doors? I'd be driven insane by the handles not all lining up. I think I'd be annoyed by seeing seams, too, through the paint... but then I'm such a hack that i won't even start a project for lack of space and tools, nor the willingness to procure materials.
excelente brother
I bought my own flat just a month ago and I'm looking at making a similar bookcase. If a hack like you can make one then an absolute amateur as I should have no issues either 😉
Any chance you could tell me the width and depth of your bookcase elements?
Does your pin nailer leave any dents on the wood when shooting?
Great build!
- Fellow hack
not dents, just a hole. Filled with quality wood filler, sanded, painted, and the client has no idea unless she reads this comment
@@wittworks I have the same one and it dents when firing. Annoying.
Apparently ones with a combo stapler cause dents, dedicated pin nailers don’t, read it on a forum after I asked some questions.
Hope any of it helps or makes sense.
thank you
I love the attention to detail in your Price quotes! 🤣 and the shout-out to @bourbonmoth. Great video! - Ur Mom 😜
If you were quoted $16k for the shelves you would need to earn $21k assuming you were in a 25% tax bracket to end up with $16k. Even greater savings and a video out of this. As usual well done. Thank you.
We have a surprising number of the same books. I bet we have the same job. :)
Without looking haha
It’s a few more than the Birch at the Big box store.
When I went shopping in person to some of these more specialized suppliers was the first time I was like, “yeah, this low grade is better than what I’ve been buying anyways.” Haha
This paint grade birch would look better with clear than what I’ve gotten from the big box.
Dont worry, Drew. We don't mind your voice overs and music choices.
well, the other $14,000 goes to tool purchases to build said cabinets.
Who doesn't love a shiny new tool
Is it just me, or was the thumbnail not the same as the final build 🤔
lol one year?… trust me don’t feel bad. We’re 2yrs and I still have stuff in house we moved out of. lol but got a deadline to get it done need to sell house to finish my new workshop.
Instead of the Wen track saw, I'd pick up the Milescraft Track Saw Guide for $99. 50" of track that works with most circular saws. My Milwaukee Saw is much more powerful that that Wen, which doesn't come with any track at $99.
but then you dont have dust collection....
@@wittworks I'll just get my kid to walk along behind me with a shop vac
But seriously, my wife just requested almost the exact same cabinets this afternoon and the like magic, your video appeared.
You got a video out of it. Put another tic in the "win" column. Nicely done.
hack? Anyway, this inspring video helps me to start building the child proof book case my daughter wants me to do. And yes, I loved the silent part 👃
Hack
But only because you said, haha
Great build, great editing, great audio--thanks for sharing
