There's a story about Eddie Van Halen, in his prime... he was asked by a reporter how it felt to be the world's best guitarist. He replied, "I wouldn't know, I've never met Roy Clark."
In his prime Mr Clark was probably the most gifted guitarist who ever lived. He was one of the very few who could play a guitar like it was a mandolin.
So glad you're featuring Roy Clark. He is said to have produced the fastest rep on the guitar. If it had strings, he was a master. Not sure what you've done on him but yesterday (live version when he was younger) is great, dueling banjos, Folsom prison blues, MALAGUENA all classics
I would never talk down about Roy. He is a national treasure and incredible musician. Treat yourself to the Outlaws version of the same song. You won't be disappointed.
Thank you so much. So many memories. I used to watch Roy Clark with my grandparents and I had just forgotten. Thank you so much for bringing them back.
It's true. Biggest difference between Roy and other great guitarists is that Roy, even after all those years, was just having fun. He could improvise more perfectly than anyone else, and that was just playing. When he played seriously (that are very few videos) he's even more epic.
Roy is hands down one of the best guitarists of his era !! As were many of the musicians & singers that were backing these huge stars up !! His banjo & fiddle playing are ridiculous as well 👍😁
He was like my Grandpa- They could, both, play guitar, fiddle/violin, harmonica and everything else! You have to love Ghost Riders, without the vocals!! I think the best guitarist is up to preference, I think the best guitarists are between- Eddie Van Halen and Angus Young, I loved Roy Clark, but I still think the GOAT lies between Angus and Eddie- but Roy is a hard 3rd for me.
@@tarrakieran2057 They asked Eddie what it was like being the best. Eddie replied, "I don't know. I'm not Roy Clark". Eddie was rough around the edges, but a class act.
Another thing that made his playing sooooo good is that you can see on his face the real love he has for the music he is playing. He was loving every minute of it.
I grew up hearing a few good versions of this Song, some on live shows and some in Movies. My personal favorite is The Outlaws doing it in the Studio. It's been in old western, cowboy movies, live at the Opry in Nashville, a few Fairgrounds, and on & on. Great choice ADogg.
This man was an absolute virtuoso on anything with strings--guitar (6 or 12), mandolin, violin/fiddle, and banjo. On top of that, unlike others who would concentrate on their playing, he was talented enough to clown around with the audiences.
Yeah, there's no point arguing about an objective "best guitarist ever", that's a mythical beast... but Roy is certainly in the elite all time for pure skill and competence on the instrument... and he could just as easily pull out a fiddle or a banjo or a mandolin and knock your socks off at ten paces with any one of them. Even me and my friends, who were totally into guitar-based rock back in those golden olden days, back when country was "country and western"...mostly considered dull boring hick music by the typical rock fan... even we had the deepest respect for Roy's abilities and musicianship and would gladly watch him anytime he appeared on tv.
Roy Clark was on Hee Haw forever. There is anything with strings that he can't play. Check out the version by The Highwaymen too please. There's more to it than yippee ki a, yippee ki o.
When I was a young lad, my Dad would watch hee haw, Grand ol opera and always tell me, this man is the best guitar, fiddle, banjo player ever. I've come to believe my Dad was never wrong. Miss my Dad dearly, ut can relive times by watching Roy.
Glen Campbell is the most widely listened to guitarist in history. He laid down the tracks for 80%of the rock & roll recordings in the 60's and 70's. Wrecking Crew!
I love what’s your doing and what you stand for….. talking about bringing folks together I think you’re doing a real good job…. bringing up positive things that will help bring this country back where it was before it was being torn apart….. Love you brother and God bless you and all you do.
This song is a reinterpretation of an old legend from pagan Europe called The Wild Hunt. This version doesn't have the lyrics, but Ghost Riders in the Sky is about cowboys being taken up into a Supernatural cattle drive in the sky led by the devil. This is in Branson, so they probably didn't want them to sing it. The song was controversial Wild Hunt legends and songs are found in both Germanic and Celtic traditions. A party of hunters sees a mighty hunter with a skull mask and antlers, and are drawn to join the hunt only to disappear in the stars. Greeks have a hunter taken into the heavens to become the constellation Orion. Jews have Nimrod, and Arabs have The Giant in the Sky. This has got to be a very old story. And since many African cultures used to keep track of seasons by nearby Sirius and the Pleaides, I speculate that the Wild Hunt may be among the oldest of all human stories, dating back to when all humans lived in Africa. And don't get me started on the Pleaides stories, which may be the oldest story of all that still survives. In any case, Ghost Riders is a cowboy version of a European myth that predates historical record. These stories are related to giant hunter legends of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle east. They are also about the same sector of the sky Africans have cared about because it allows prediction of rainfall and animal migration. These stories may be the oldest humans have ever told.
I heard Roy play at the Louisiana State Fair when I was a young teenager. He could do anything with any instrument. Keep on, young Gentleman, your taste is impeccable.
Roy Clark was without doubt one of the top stringed instrument players of all time. My preferred genre for actual listening, though, is Blues. I would refer you to Justin Johnson, a contemporary stringed instrument player who is beyond phenomenal and has amazed me repeatedly with his skill and emotional immersion in many of his recordings.
This song has been around since the 1940s at least. A popular version with lyrics is from 1949, Vaughn Monroe! A more recent version that is popular is by The Outlaws. You should definitely check one out. Great lyrics.
I love your channel and I love your support for the fantastic Roy Clark. He’s one of the most underrated and overlooked artists in music history. I’d like to introduce you to another band that has been overlooked, The Flying Burrito Brothers. The leader, Gram Parsons, has been credited for creating country rock (and, of course, that’s submissive.) I hope you can react to their song Sin City. Thanks. Great job! Keep it up!
LOL! The first time my Daddy heard this original on the 1950s radio in his car ,he could not wait to get home and tell my Mama about " this new song out" but he couldn't Remember the name of it. Mama said he fished around in his head ,said a few titles " NAW ,NAW THAT WASNT IT He Got so frustrated he finally said ,"Well just listen out for it .ITS ABOUT COWBOYS IN THE CLOUDS"!! I never hear Ghost Riders that I don't think about my Late Daddy trying to remember the Title. And that's my special name for Ghost Riders in the Sky. For a Real treat find the Original by the "Sons of the Pioneers. "! They were Roy Rogers of the 1950s Band till he went on TV. Thanks for liking this. I'm surprised you do! ❤️✨🕯️
I am 72 now and have to admit I was sort of an Underground Music snob back then. If it wasn't Hendrix, Clapton or Page, I wasn't interested. Especially in someone who was a host of the corny show Hee Haw! It took 50 years before realizing how incredible he was way back then, playing just clean guitar and no bigtime effects! Just now, it gives me chills! However, let's face it, he did present himself in a comedic manner so much that many thought he was joking. He was! The joke was on us!
As probably said before, the most famous Jimi Hendrix quote ever. When asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world? Jimi responded "Go ask Roy Clark"!
I agree with you 100 percent Roy Clark was the best best the very best guitarist that ever lived. There are many awesome guitarist that were excellent awesome but Roy Clark was number one on the list of the very best.. he was a musical genius he could play several other instruments other than guitar and he played those just as good.. what an amazing man..
He was skilled in the traditions of many genres, including classical guitar, country music, Latin music, bluegrass, and pop. He had hit songs as a pop vocalist (e.g., "Yesterday, When I Was Young" and "Thank God and Greyhound"), and his instrumental skill had an enormous effect on generations of bluegrass and country musicians. He became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1987, and, in 2009, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He published his autobiography, My Life-in Spite of Myself, in 1994.
Many years ago we parked next to Roy Clark in a camp ground. He was friendly and a nice person. This was after he had become well known and still just a nice guy.
First time checking out you're channel. Wow! Roy Clark unbelievable! I saw him okay as a kid at an air show . During his hee hay show daysbMy grandpa took me he was a big fan of his. I've posted this in many places. Jimmy Dean of sausage fame was an actor and musician before the sausage. Roy Clark was in his band. Jimmy demanded everyone be on time, all the time. Roy was late once too often. Jimmy told him, "You're the most talented person I've ever had to fire."
You gotta watch Roy's face on some of these because he is also hilarious. He LOVED having a good time and never took himself to serious and that's what makes great entertainers.
Da Real Adogg, I absolutely agree, imagine a jam with Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Van Halen, Jimmie Hendricks!! With technology today could they be cast together in a Guitar Fest?
Did you know sir that he is also tone deaf? Awesome he was grew up listening to roy clark, buck owens, grandpa jones, string bean. He haw will live on in our hearts forever. You probably don't know these or mini perl. But you brought back some memories. Thank you my brother.
I love the whole "Book by it's cover" thing you have going. I left the USA in 1979 with a love of hard rock. I returned in 1988 with everything Bob Marley ever recorded.
Roy Clark is Great the 12 string is a lot harder to pick than a 6 string, and he was a master at it, You should check out Glen Campbell doing the William Tell Overture and him playing the 12 string on top of his head, Also Glen never learned to read music and played in studio recordings for a lot of great bands before he went out on his own,
That's a wild looking 12 string guitar he's using, must've been custom made. Roy was an instrumental wizard so no matter what you put in his hands he could make it "talk." His talent was so great it allowed him to clown around while still blazing away. And yes, fun was a big part of his appeal making him quite an entertainer as well. It's a complete waste of time and energy debating who's the best guitarist, like Jon Batiste said: "It's all subjective" about the notion of best.
In Memory of Roy Clark on UA-cam is a great tribute to one of the best. Roy Clark was to Guitar, Banjo and fiddle what Neil Peart was to drums, that being a gifted natural born at their craft. In Memory of Roy Clark check it out...

Everyone wanted these guys to play on their records. Glenn, even at the height of his career loved to play as a session guitarist on a lot of albums of both rock and country.
Just like I love Jemi Hendrix.. it is no surprise to me that you can appreciate the talents of Roy Clark. I wish more people were open to new experiences.
Try the duet between Roy Clark and Glen Campbell from He Haw, Might have been Ghost Riders again and they were dueling on the guitars. Also did you notice Roy was playing a 12 string, harder to play than a 6 string.
Yes Roy Clark was really that good! Just because it was 1950 to 1975 doesn't mean it was long ago. Dolly and many other famous real musicians were top #1 charts. :)

React to John entwistle and his bass solos, he sounds otherworldly with his bass.

Absolutely and he played this version in his 70's. Him and Jerry Reed were 2 of the finest ever.

One of the best entertainers, has to be Roy Clark. He can make any instrument talk.

There's guitarists and then there's Roy Clark. A league of his own.

His comedy sometimes steals the show, but his skills and artistry are the foundation.
Among His Many Talents, Mr. Clark campaigned a '64 Super Stock Dodge Drag Car named 'Super Picker'
He did Very Well with It!!!

The fabulous Jimi Hendrix was asked by a reporter how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world. He said, "I don't know. Ask Roy Clark!"
Then of course there is Chet Atkins. They have played together, it is out there!!! Roy of course is such a fun act, comedy. I saw him in Vegas for my tenth anniversary.
A dream concert would have been Roy Clark, Chet Atkins and Glen Campbell on one stage, trading riffs.
Roy Clark ahead of his time
For his guitar chops, try MALAGUENA.
There are two songs that you can listen to and get a good idea of the talent of this man! Earlier in his career he would mix comedy in with this amazing guitar playing. One of his best early songs to show his comedy is his Cover of Folsom Prison Blues!!! Then if you want to see some mind blowing guitar , He done a spanish song called Maleguena, I think that is the correct spelling of it. There are several recordings of it , but the one that blows me away the most is from the old TV show, the Odd Couple. I have never heard anything like it!
Roy is an awesome entertainer! Guitar & humor!
He wasn't just someone to listen to, he was someone you had to watch.
His fingers were lightening.
Have you listened to Orange Blossom Special?
Totally agree with you .
You really need to see Roy video where does Mejaguania on a 12 string. you can pick it out he is wearing a gold shirt. Even more amazing.
I grew up in the 70s watching HeeHaw and Roy Clark is one of the best ever
Outlaws do a great cover of this, Roy Clark is the King
He is no doubt one of the best ever to play any stringed instrument!
that actually has lyrics to it. there were 4 country legends that did that song, some included johnny cash, willie nelson (i think) can't remember the rest. the song is amazing.
Yes, Roy Clark is one of the best. Pair him with Doc Watson or Chet Atkins and keep a fire extinguisher handy! They burn through strings like paper!
I would add Glenn Campbell to the list. If you haven't heard it, watch Glenn perform the William Tell Overture live while playing the guitar over his head. He is the WIZARD of guitar players
Just like I love Jemi Hendrix.. it is no surprise to me that you can appreciate the talents of Roy Clark. I wish more people were open to new experiences.
Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Carlos Santana, Glen Campbell,Buck Owens they just don't come any better!
Cool, playing it on a 12 string! He is so versatile.
His picking hand may be the best I've ever seen.
