Its nice to see the boys all have their safety sandles on
No te preocuoes no es tan peligroso como las bombas democráticas de USA
That's exactly what I thought lol
I want to see that safety gear that would protect the workers from injury in case this thing drops off the chain lol
Your safety boots aren't going to do shit against 3 tonnes either, smartass
😅😅 in USA we got safety toe shoes but we got some workers with one hand they are holding his pants and with the other hand pulling a pallet jack, so where is the safety 😅
“It’s old, not obsolete!” Very Nice work gentlemen!
thats how I make gears too, right here in the good old USA
They don't make em like they used to.
The lathe I mean. I'm sure the gear has been made that way basically since that lathe was built.
A lot of machine shops in the US still have older machines. I ran a horizontal boring mill for years. Twice the age that I am. Works great 😅
Well put!
@@jwaseman8487trhiugg
The older machines were designed and built to last! Great to see that they are still being used! Awesome job men!!!
So yur a fkin legend then Mr knows fk all about fk all
Wow who sent that bastardddss
Honestly with minimal equipment and safety they do a very nice job on most of their manufacturing
Have you ever seen pictures from accidents from such factories?
You wouldn't believe on what small pieces human body can be shattered.
But it won't be on UA-cam or advisement :(
Those sandals are also great. No feets, no boots needed :)
It's not minimalist, these men are very competent and have machines that would fit right in circa 1970s and 80s USA. Might not be the absolute peak of manufacturing tech, but it built the America that is today.
@@jameshall3747 yes, but america build those machines by THEMSELVES.
And they were brand new back then.
We have couple of old forging machines in factory where I work.
Compared to the newer ones they are piece's of shit. Everything is loose and forgings come out with dimensions fucked up.
So that machines won't build India or Pakistan or anyone today. They'll don't let them starve at very best
A layperson could say that. 🤣🤣🤣
That Webster and Bennett is from the 1940s, making it around 90 years old built in England
If you bought a replacement new today you would be lucky if it lasted 10 years
At least someone knows their machines, that Webster and Bennett looks from 1960-1980s they are hard to age.
I have seen hundreds in the UK and know people who worked there, now they rebuild them for a living.
Yes the creators of these videos rarely have time for details like accuracy and truth.
To be fair the cutting tool did look to be around 150 years old...

Good ol webster and bennett vertical lathe. I miss running those
we have one with the counter weight cable broke and it scares me to death lol
@@jwaseman8487 that doesn’t sound like a fun time! I can totally understand why you’re scared of that. How do you run it without the counterweight? Run it with the break on
@@MathewHammond1 basically just keep all backlash away from cut except moving axis and keep brake a litttle snug not fully tightened. Also if youre hand feeding down do not let go of wheel as it will drift out of control. I guess fixing it is a huge tear down.
Throughout it's 150 years of service, it's completed four of these pieces. It has never gone down for maintenance
👍😂
I'm having a hard time believing that was built in 1873, during the Victorian Era. It looks later than that, 1900 to 1920, I'd say.
@@imdeplorable2241 I'm pretty sure thats from the 40's or 50's
Another commenter said it was a Webster and Bennett from England, around the 1940's or 50's, making it around 90 years old.
МашаъАллах 👍🏻
Просто супер что вы творите такие чудеса это очень важные и практически недоступные детали, респект вам большой!
First off, that lathe was not built in the 1880's. We didn't have electric tooling of that type till the early 1900's.
thank you
There’s no way that weighs 3t either.
Сделано в Пакистане
А упаковка гласит : Евросоюз
The lathe is Webster & Bennett, made in Unitef Kingdom. Almost 100 yrs old.

These guys achieve such high quality products in almost backstreet workshops not many countries could achieve such workmanship incredible
weirdly enough, the company that made that 150 year old lathe, is only 102 years old. Must have been the first prototype.
That is it perfect and work man they are the best
Selling machine tools for years, what’s astounding here is these materials are being dry cut, no cutting fluid. Amazing.
Now this is a Machine Shop!
Un trabajo perfecto el que hizo
I wonder what these gears are used for ?
They move
Making sandals.
IKR! Is it for a ship engine or what?
Probably some sort of PTO or some sort of crankshaft accessory gear for a large 2 stroke marine diesel engine
i know one use is for gear reduction of steam turbines

Glad to see a bunch of old American machines still turning parts..
One thing I noticed, and would make a lot of sense, is the reason why these parts are usually large when in the context of a not so quality driven process. And the reason is that the bigger the parts are, the looser the tolerances. So you can start having +/-5mm for example, which is good enough to be checked with a measuring tape. So overall, it is indeed quite smart and efficient to quote such a company for work that fits the spec.
i don't see why the tolerance would necessarily change, depends what it's being used for. this may be the best they have available to them.
That's the biggest bullshit I ever heard , tolerance don't depend on size, by gears its very restricted doesn't meter what
Yo, my man, gonna earn yourself a Darwin award. Quit that thinking while you can!
Imagine one part not fitting into another after 1 milion work cycles.
Now imagine that part weights 4 tonnes.
Or submarine with 0,8mm gaps "because of tolerances"
I can get something within 0.01 on a tape measure and on veneers 0.001. It's still precision
@@SuperVladamere don't fool yourself :)
Are you always working in 20°C? Between 10° and 30° there is 0,2% error on 1m. So it's 0,02. And it's only in PERFEC contitions; no play on the end and the tape is perfectly aligned.
You know that plastics bit on screw micrometers? It's to negotiate the heat of the hand on the reading lol.
ISO 9001 says, that you need twice as precise tool than the reading you're doing.
So for 0,01mm you need 0,005mm.
Otherwise you weren't even close to call yourself "precision worker" and you're fooling yourself and your customers/boss
Now the real question is...What the heck does that gEaR go into⁉️ 🤯
A really big gearbox

Super video 👌👍
No oil? Or lube?
I've often used big lathes and mills and the ones that turn at low rpm's, like this old Webster & Bennett from the 1940's, often require little or no cutting oil or coolant.
I've ran huge lathes, horizontal and verticals. It's too much material to get hot. Also we never used expensive cutters, only blank high speed steel
I worked in a forging plant for thirty years.
VTLs like this are still used daily in that plant .
These machines are chip making

I worked at Emerson Fisher Controls a a sort've intern drafter for a minute. I got to your the factory They had a 12 FOOT vertical lathe at their original factory in Marshalltown, IA. Thing was insane. The mounting table was recessed into the ground about 3 feet. Old boys there talked about a time a part came loose in it. Flew off the table and slammed into the concrete ledge surrounding it. Guys in the factory said it felt like an earthquake.
Impressive. Really impressive under their working conditions.
