This video was filmed around February 1941 at Chitose Airfield, capturing the snow training of the First Squadron of the Chitose Air Group, led by Captain Watanabe. At the time, the main force of the Chitose Air Group had been ordered to advance to the South Sea Islands in preparation for the outbreak of war between Japan and the United States and had relocated to the Tateyama Air Base at the beginning of the year. The First Squadron remained at Chitose Airfield for two main purposes: To document on film the know-how of operating attack aircraft during extreme winter conditions, which the Chitose Air Group had researched for years, so that future air groups deploying to cold regions could use it as a reference. To conduct cold-region operational tests on a single G4M1 "Betty" bomber, which was on the verge of formal adoption. At that time, the Chitose Air Group had been allocated just one G4M1 bomber for this purpose. The First Squadron, seen in this film, later regrouped with the main force and advanced from Chitose to Saipan in April 1941. From there, they conducted training in preparation for war against the United States at locations such as Peleliu and Roi-Namur. The G4M1 bomber seen in the film was also deployed to Roi-Namur, and on December 4, 1941, just before the outbreak of war, it carried out a high-speed reconnaissance mission over Wake Island. This reconnaissance confirmed the presence of F4F fighters stationed on Wake Island, providing crucial intelligence for the subsequent invasion. At nearly the same time as the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Chitose Air Group launched a full-scale air raid on Wake Island, marking the start of the war. As a key force in the Central Pacific, the Chitose Air Group engaged in battles across various locations, standing as a formidable opponent to U.S. forces. The unit is known for the high number of crew members who perished in action. It is believed that very few of the crew who participated in this snow training survived the war, and no personal memoirs or records from them have been published.
America then committed an act of war against Japan by cutting off its oil supplies. Japan then warned America against an attack on Hawaii..... this part is conveniently left out of the "American narrative".
Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service Mitsubishi G3M Type 96 land-based attack bombers and G4M Type 1 land-based attack bombers. 5:04 "S-309" is belong to Chitose Kokutai (Chitose Air Group) .

Thank you for the additional information

5:12 mark, you can see at least one G4M Betty in that shot and next shot. Not sure if same bomber or if there are two in that group warming up.
Wonderful times. Thank you

The Mitsubishi (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) G3M called " NELL"
Called Nell by the allies not the japs, so you`re only telling half the story here.
Can you do one on Japanese air force navigators during WWII?
I want to see a Japanese training film on the dangers of STDs.
