Does anyone have any info on the Lost German Girl filmed from Haglund?

The vast majority of P-47 pilots who were KIA lost their lives doing ground straffing in the last 2 months of the war.

My great uncle was killed there April 19th, 1945. He was in the 271st Infantry Regiment, 69th Infantry Division.

It's interesting to see the M5 13-ton high-speed tractor being used as a prime mover for a 105 howitzer at 8:53. You don't often see these WWII tractors in action.

I'm sure some of the Pilots in emergency landings would.like to insert a tail flap into the condescending narrator in this film!!! The crew could be shot up or otherwise in technical difficulty to land by 'the book" all the time! Most of the crews were probably in their mid 20's, with little experience in emergency situations despite all the training!

Always like a small monkey nation, it raises its paws against the Great Ones. While the Germans can draw conclusions, they have not yet learned humility and obedience here. They prefer to die rather than obey THE LORD. Their artificially and falsely justified mania of superiority may one day lead Europe to disaster.

never discount a "near miss" bomb for a ship--what some gaming platforms get wrong, too. i was crew on a CV decades ago that did a test detonation of a 1000 lb bomb hundreds of yards to starboard. it broke stuff (badly) and hurt a lot of people. some systems were even within the citadel armor. good collection. add opera music.

My grandfather was in the 14th Armored, 62nd AIB. In April 45 I know he would have been in that group as he spoke of that last push before the war ended. Not enough detail in the faces to find him, but made my day to see that, God rest his soul .

Grandpa was a Fireman boiler rm 3 aboard the USS Mi, during the pacific theater, so i know much of the history. While away at school in 1998 in Charlotte, NC i saw a history channel depicting a different story than what i had been told about the ending, the set up of the signing. The story told of a destroyer off, lost and needed a special table, I called Grandpa and told him about this he turned on the same channel. What happened next the Gov, national archive took a recording of what actually happened, and the video was removed. So what actually happened, as it was told to me by Richard A. Blanchard, my Grandfather. An officer told Grandpa to come with him and anther sailor close by, they went to the mess unbolted a metal table from the mess hall. Found a purple tapestry on the wall of the mess and took it down but it had an ugly stain in the center, they put the book over the stain. and that is what you see in the videos.

Great history film. I was somewhat surprised to see some of the US soldiers casually walking around without a weapon. Yes, the war was to end a week or so later, but they didn't know that. In Vietnam you took your weapon EVERYWHERE!

These guys had balls of steel the size of watermelons. No wonder they famously got all the girls. Its amazing the tech that came out of this war. Thats was the only benefit to mankind. The jet engine, laser guided guns, correct parachute procedures, radar, rules of war with allowances to allies against axis. And of course, nuclear power. Sorry japan. But it never ceases to amaze me these brave men that knew each day was a gamble. They just woke up and did it again. Time after time. I hate war but ww2 is really a standpoint in our lifetime to see the ins and outs properly. And how we can heal. Germany and japan are the greatest places now! America is a rotting s hithole, my country australia is a total coward and bows to every other country, we also let china rule us, france stinks and i think always did. India isa powerhouse, china is, america stole enough to be also, russia is now no different to then, italy is lovely too! My how the tables turn.

You’ll never see an operation like this again on the modern battlefield. There would be a swarm of drones taking out the bridge before the first pontoon was put in the water.

It took real aiming back then, ain't no video game. Seeing the tracers it's amazing how far some shots ricochet.

Talk about scorched earth policy.

@6:50 it looks like they are making that white smoke on purpose to screen their movements. Is that correct?

It's refreshing to see the more mundane, deliberate side of running a war. Slowly, step by step, the army crosses the river and takes another step toward its objective. The MP at the end was a great character study.

I live at Nierstein, German, where this Rhine crossing took place, only some hundred meters from my house. Great to see this footage now!
