At the age of 49, weighing 18 stone odd and being one of the most unfit females on the planet, I've just watched your first jump rope lesson (which is brilliant) and have just managed 9, yes 9, continuous bounce steps after just a few minutes!!! I am so chuffed!!! I've got a long way to go to loose some pounds and get fit but it's a great start, I feel motivated, it feels achievable and above all, it's great fun. Thank you!!!
It's hard on your joints. You might be better getting a mini trampoline/rebounder and jogging on that as it cushions your knees and ankles but gives you a great cardio workout. 5 minutes on it and your heart gets pumping bigtime. Best thing is you can do it whilst watching your favourite TV program. Maybe do skipping one day and trampolining the next day?
Nina Chapman Im 52 and jump rope about 50 plus minutes a day... make sure you have a cushioned jumping mat or wood floor... keep going as it is great exercise!!
i have seen so many lessons on how to start jumping here on UA-cam, a lot of them are new videos from channels that focus primarily on jump rope and yet this lesson is hands down the best lesson i have come across, thank you doc
I love how you took the time to explain all the basics. I also love how you show us how to start by doing one, then progress slowly as we get proficient. It's like "yeah, I can do that". Many thanks!
I decided to take up jump rope today to add variety to my daily exercise routine due to the Coronavirus. I’m glad I found your video! Great advice for beginners 🙏👍🏼
awesome!!!!! most informative of all the Jump Rope vids I have watched. The first to talk about rope length and the first that talks about proper jump step and what not to do. seriously, this is a great vid. Thanks!!!!!
What a very thorough video, i jump rope for fun and recently wanted to start making it a regular exercise. If someone didn't know what or where to start this is a great starter video, very appreciated thank you!
The best tutorial video I've seen so far. In the past I would always attempt skipping and then I'd get shin splints and figure it was just me...bad physical genetics. Good to know anyone can get shin splints if they don't take the time to condition themselves to this activity.
Fantastic! What a great teacher she is! I just got a jump rope and recently started trying for the first time since I was a kid. The problem I’m having is that I’ve always double bounced. It’s going to be hard to break that double bouncing habit! But I have hope from this teacher!
WOW!!! accidentally discovered you while looking for jump rope exercises and now I am OBSESSED!!! I started my first workout today! Looking forward to achieving great results!!!!!! You are an inspiration!!!! ;)
Glad I found this I work a lot and dont have time to exercise most days. I do some yoga/stretching and a few minutes of cardio when I can. I'm starting jump rope this week. This is what I've been looking for. Very helpful thank you for this.
Excellent video. I did cross fit here in Kansas City for 3.5 years and I hated jumping rope but you inspired me to try it again for an effective form of exercise. Thank you so much for this.
Wow! Thank you! I was pounding that pavement with abserd double bounces mixed with a single bounce. On top of crazy arm motions! I felt like I was trying to swat flies in some crazy jump rope judo form!!
I have been jumping rope for several years now on and off, after I developed knee problems from training for a marathon at my age, so glad the trend is building so I could stop getting odd looks. Anyway, I was a little turned off by how much time was spent on basic stuff but kept watching hoping to get to the bounce step. Glad I stuck around, there were things I hadn't considered. I know to bounce on the balls of my feet, but i hadn't thought of bending a little, which makes sense now that I think of it, and few other things to. It's harder to unlearn bad habits then to learn new good habits, so hope more people watch these before getting back to jumping rope.
Sara, thanks so much for the excellent instruction on jumping rope. You cover how to, what not to do , stretching and the amount of time to jump so as to prevent injuries. I just tried it once earlier today and felt great. Thanks again.
Great video Dr. Solomon. I recently at the age of 64 decided to start jumping again. I"m in good shape, no health issues so just want to spice up my activities. I'm glad I watched this because I was just going to try and do it on my driveway but now I guess I'll try something else to bounce(smile) on. Thank you for the great info about the shoes and all the aspects of beginners jumping. I now feel confident in starting. I look forward to the other levels once I master this one.
Omg! Thanks for doing this tutorial for people like me, who's a complete beginner... Really! I've never jumped rope before. All my life I've been a fat girl the most that I used to weigh was 330 pounds and recently got down to 275 but I'm stuck and need something new to workout, I started today and thought I wouldn't be able to do two in a row. I did 5 sets of two successfully and many other that I failed. But hey! I'll keep going till I reach my goal!
I'd like to thank Sara for making this video. I know you have other more recent ones on jumping rope tutorial but this is the best and you have really made jumping rope much much more simple and easier for me. I am in love with this exercise because I feel that I can master it right now, of course not up to 140 strikes yet, but 50+ is not hard tough🤩🤩
I used to jump rope years ago to keep in shape. Now at 66 I have a need once more of getting into shape. Since being retired I have totally gone into sitting on a chair at the beach mode but I'm only about 195 lbs at 5'8". Only 15 pounds more than when I graduated high school. Liked your tutorial. I used to run cross country courses and used the jump rope to warm up. Hope you don't mind me saying but you have beautiful eyes and are what my friends would call "Drop Dead Gorgeous" hey it helps to get guys like me to watch your videos. lol Yes staying at home for months in this pandemic you tend to notice when a woman is beautiful and doing social distancing I couldn't say this in person but wanted you to know you made my day. Take care and be safe.
I am 53 years old . From young days i love jump rope , but never able to jump for 5 minuites . I do lot of exercises and go to the gym . But jump rope i cannot do . I hope i will start with this tutorial. . Im keen ti learn . Thank you so much .
@DrSaraSolomon Hi. Thank you so much for this video! I am so touched & overwhelmed by your heartfelt character & life story. You are amazing to say the least, drop dead gorgeous, intelligent, driven to succeed, self mastered your time, dietary & eating habits, physical fitness ambitions & passions, hobbies, talents & gifts unlike anybody I've ever known. You've dedicated to living to the fullest & built the necessary foundation through extensive learning, perseverance & life experience. You've paid your dues with relentless & prolific research which has been appropriate & prerequisite to achieving your goals & dreams, creating your own stunning, beautiful identity which is what life is all about. You never quit & always adapt to meet your challenges & aspirations in all facets, dimensions & aspects of your world...I can tell you make any adjustments with almost neurotic precision to maximize every moment, perfect every skill without excuses or quitting & I love it! Your focus, passion for life & exemplary leadership is awe inspiring, absolutely praiseworthy & blows my mind (in case you can't tell). You are one in a million & very special, so with that said...now I can tell you a little about myself. I've been legally blind & had a heart condition since birth (WPW) which literally a couple hundred doctors over the years & decades misdiagnosed, even intensified, aggravated & complicated until I finally had a heart attack at the age of 32, which was when my life finally started making sense. I'm 45 now, & lost the best years of my life, my youth, my personal & professional opportunities along the way because of all the prescribed drugs which led to desperate lifestyle choices, substance abuse issues & addictions to attempt to cope & compensate for so many unresolved & frustrating moments where I reached out only to be given life threatening, incompetent, highly toxic, hazardous & detrimental advice, medical & mental care. Those memories & experiences are still fresh in my brain like it was yesterday, but I don't want to forget. My past from hell makes me who I am today, a strong man no longer addicted to street drugs, on any prescribed medications or in bondage to the heartless tactics & deceptions of Westernized medicine or psychology or the hands of any misleading & counterproductive institutions I've submissively trusted. I too, have faced my demons & won because I'm still above ground & moving forward. I recently started jumping rope maybe a month ago (on my own & before I ever saw you on UA-cam) with a rope that's too small, on the pavement in my parking spot at the condo where I live, with the wrong type of rope & footwear. I'm so grateful I found you on UA-cam & hope to learn & grow from your strength, tenacity & wisdom. Thank you so much for shining your light in public, said the blind man. Even I can see it.
Hi! I just bought my jump rope after a few whips and tagles here and there i put it back down. I seen this video and I learned how you're holding and only using wrists. My mistakes, I do 2 jumps and swing my shoulders. I will try it this way. BY THE WAY I LOVE YOUR EYES
Thanks for that informative video Sara! I just got my first jump rope and and itching to start. This video is great and I love the step by step format of how you set it up! (Its also nice to see fitness content from a Canuck!)
Really, thanks for the advice on the elbows being close and the two inch circles with your wrist and the grip form. I just started out and after some days of half decent progress it's improved a lot
I so wish I’d found this video earlier before I attempted jump rope with no warm up/stretches and bust my ankle jumping like an uncoordinated baby elephant aged 50 on hard concrete in bare feet with a speed rope way too long for my 5ft height. Can’t walk for a few weeks now let alone hop skip or jump! Brilliant beginner video - now I know EVERYTHING I did wrong - pretty much everything you shouldn’t do I did. Painful lesson learned.
I’ve seen quite a few of these as I’m trying to learn an efficient way to use this as an exercise method during COVID, and this is the best step by step of every detail :) THANKS. (Note to self: cue up at 6:10)
I just bought a jump rope today but I love jumping rope when I live in the country side..I was disappointed it's too light. Glad to have seen your video .hope I can make use of it. I tripped so my ankle hurts right now. 🙄
Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to jump rope for years. I had even given up until I saw this video. Now for the first time ever I can jump rope
This was so good! Thank you! I am thinking of taking up jumping rope, I'm getting a little tired of the stationary bike and would like some variety. Glad I stumbled upon this!💕💕💕
thanks a lot . i'd tried to jumped but I'd always got frustrated. i've just found your video and wanted to give it a try and i achieved to do it !!!! love you.
You need to do what YOUR body tells you... someone can say "Skip for 35 mins" but it's up to you to know your own limits. Following a "Pro" will get your hurt lol so use your own limits and build the muscles as needed. I honestly couldn't jump more then 3-5 mins a day when I started 6 months ago. I was 245lbs, I weigh 195lbs now. I jump up to 30 mins a day, sometimes one session and sometimes three 10 minute sessions. Depends on my workout that day. Don't get discouraged of you can only jump for a short period of time, it will get better if you stick with it 😀
So glad I came across your video. :D Tied knots in my rope, no need to cut it - now my daughter can use it as well - thanks for the valuable tip. Now beginning my #1 Bounce Step challenge!
Thank you for this beginner series! I bought this jump rope months ago and I'm looking forward to using it now that the weather is getting warmer here (I don't have a place suitable in my house to jump rope due to very low ceilings).
Thanks Sara. I have had been struggling with tripping for a few days , until now. I doubted that I lacked muscle and brain coordination. The problem came out to be me flaring out my elbows wide. All thanks to your tutorial because of which, I was able to correct the above mentioned mistake. P.S:- u look hot when u do that criss cross technique
This was a great beginner video. Thanks for the tip about Canadian winters and jump rope length! I would definitely have messed that up. I did highland dance for 15 years and we jump up and down for hours in thin leather shoes so I'm used to it...no thick soles for me :)
Thanks for the video and the link to your gear. My opinion on the running shoe logic is a result of the shoe marketing. I've been running barefoot. Our feet and legs are designed to absorb shock. They do it very well. The problem is that people have lived their lives with their feet in a cushioned shoe so once they start barefoot, it's painful unless introduced properly to build up your feet and calves. The only reason to wear shoes while jumping rope is to avoid the pain when the rope hits your foot.
Thanks for the video! Great instructions and easy to follow. Love the recommendations for stretching too. I use the stairs to stretch my calf but am thinking I will be getting a foam roller now too. I hate when my hamstrings and calves are tight the next day. Going to working on this till I can do 140! Then onto the next lesson. Thanks!
Thank you for the great Vid!! Very informative with great tips for a beginner like myself. This is something that I always wanted to do properly since I saw Rocky 4 in the theater back in '85 and now I'm on my way. I look forward to your next vid :) Greetings from Powell River, BC :)
Actually is alway better and healthier jump rope barefoot. Forget this fancy shoes. Just take your time, as your feet muscles are not used to it and need time for adaptation.
@@killphaser25 depend on individual. I jump rope barefoot.. at first ofcourse your knees will hurt but after recovery, no problem about knees or shin splints anymore 😁.. We human can adapt any situation. Just get use to it
You can also do that static calf stretch on a Bosu ball (the blue thing in the background), flat side up. That single stretch cured my plantar fasciitis.

You go girl!
I'm so proud of you!!! I only mastered 4 one time. hehe
Keep up the good work Nina, I am not doing very well, I am up to 25 jumps. I thought it would be easier. I’m not going to quit though.
This is hands down the best jumping rope vid for beginers on youtube. You covered everything. Perfect. And thank you for that.
Jump Rope Dudes also provide a very good tutorial for beginners. Sara's is great too, don't get me wrong.
I agree!
I have seen the one from the Jump rope dudes n def prefer this one..Thank u Sara for that great tutorial!
I totally agree

I've started today and your tips were very useful. I achieved 21 consecutives jumps. I will keep praticing till 140.
Damn, I never thought a jumping rope video could be this scientific. I want my childhood back so I can jump correctly.
I am going to try this, starting tomorrow. I am 70 and have to get into shape. Thank you, Frank
😂😂
My marathon training plan said jump rope before running and I wanted to do it right - this is exactly what I needed, thank you Sara!

I just wanted you to know that you're the first video that helped me into jumping rope. Thanks for this! All the love ♥️

I love this video!!! I can’t wait to do this! She said no more than 5 mins a day starting out and I already tried practicing so I’ll start tomorrow!
Wow! Thank you! I was pounding that pavement with abserd double bounces mixed with a single bounce. On top of crazy arm motions! I felt like I was trying to swat flies in some crazy jump rope judo form!!
I'm so happy, I finally get to do the single bounce jump! Made it 30 in a row, not yet 5 minutes straight. I'll keep practicing.

musicklvr8ify So glad to see your post. I’m 63 and I’m going to start also. We’re not too old! Fun!!!
I love the cat in the background. I am listening to this video while I'm driving and I momentarily thought that my own cat was in my car. Hahahahaha
Go Dr. Sara! Go Dr. Sara! Jump! Jump! Jump!
This is a good "how to get started" video.
I've been jumping for about a year, but I'm always looking for good videos.
Thanks for this.

You were made to teach :) I get that very thorough careful motherly teaching vibe.
Almost chewed my leg off waiting to see her demo how to jump rope (finally at 6:10).

Your focus, passion for life & exemplary leadership is awe inspiring, absolutely praiseworthy & blows my mind (in case you can't tell). You are one in a million & very special, so with that said...now I can tell you a little about myself.

Hi! I just bought my jump rope after a few whips and tagles here and there i put it back down. I seen this video and I learned how you're holding and only using wrists. My mistakes, I do 2 jumps and swing my shoulders. I will try it this way. BY THE WAY I LOVE YOUR EYES

Thank you... That was the best tutorial video for beginners
Thanks for that informative video Sara! I just got my first jump rope and and itching to start. This video is great and I love the step by step format of how you set it up! (Its also nice to see fitness content from a Canuck!)

LMAO!
Thanks for having me here 😀 👍 wonderful teacher all you've said is noted ✅️

Did you see results?
Very informative. Great video. Love the kitty in the back ground!
I just bought a jump rope today but I love jumping rope when I live in the country side..I was disappointed it's too light. Glad to have seen your video .hope I can make use of it. I tripped so my ankle hurts right now. 🙄

*Crying out loud* there you go :D
Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to jump rope for years. I had even given up until I saw this video. Now for the first time ever I can jump rope
I really like the weight rack and cart. I’m gonna look into buying these.
I just tied a knot in my too long rope.🤯 Thanks for that idea!!
This was so good! Thank you! I am thinking of taking up jumping rope, I'm getting a little tired of the stationary bike and would like some variety. Glad I stumbled upon this!💕💕💕
thanks a lot . i'd tried to jumped but I'd always got frustrated. i've just found your video and wanted to give it a try and i achieved to do it !!!! love you.
Thank U for telling 5 minutes AS a start. Other youtuber talks about 30-45 minutes.

I know what you mean!
Good advice. I love the start technique.
Great breakdown. Thanks.
Great video Sara
Thanks
Thank you so much for this! Lots of info and now I've learned how to jump rope + the proper cool down routine!
Thanku. Excellent video.
Thanks Sara. I have had been struggling with tripping for a few days , until now.
I doubted that I lacked muscle and brain coordination.
The problem came out to be me flaring out my elbows wide.
All thanks to your tutorial because of which, I was able to correct the above mentioned mistake.
P.S:- u look hot when u do that criss cross technique
thank you so much, wow, that is so helpful, you are so nice, and, so professional ! I want to start after listening to this a few times.
Hi, my first time trying just now, it works!! Try other other it doest happen. Thanksssssssss
Other youtubers tutorials
I could do about 15 continuous bounces then I watched this video once and managed 82 in a row. Really helpful video. Thank you!
This was a great beginner video. Thanks for the tip about Canadian winters and jump rope length! I would definitely have messed that up.
I did highland dance for 15 years and we jump up and down for hours in thin leather shoes so I'm used to it...no thick soles for me :)

Thanks!
Very useful stuff about swinging the rope the first time.
Thank you for the great Vid!! Very informative with great tips for a beginner like myself. This is something that I always wanted to do properly since I saw Rocky 4 in the theater back in '85 and now I'm on my way. I look forward to your next vid :) Greetings from Powell River, BC :)
Great lesson! Basic bounce is the foundation ;-)
thanks sara, very instructive video
"never jump rope bare foot" oops whatever....XD
Actually is alway better and healthier jump rope barefoot. Forget this fancy shoes.
Just take your time, as your feet muscles are not used to it and need time for adaptation.
What if I'm barefoot most of the time (except of winter, too cold)
@@Joao-ur7ey actually I tried jumping rope barefoot and the rope kept getting stuck in between my toes and I was going to trip. So the coach is right.
@@killphaser25 depend on individual. I jump rope barefoot.. at first ofcourse your knees will hurt but after recovery, no problem about knees or shin splints anymore 😁..
We human can adapt any situation. Just get use to it
Thank you very much, you have given a great presentation in this video.
You can also do that static calf stretch on a Bosu ball (the blue thing in the background), flat side up. That single stretch cured my plantar fasciitis.
can’t wait to learn more.
Who would have thought I would fall in love while learning how to jump rope? The good Doctor is so very cute.
And she has cats...bravo!
