He puts on one hell of a concert! I absolutely love his storytelling songs - this one, Spaceman, the Traveler, Don't Pay the Ferryman, Crusader, Patricia the Stripper. So many awesome songs.

I used to listen to this on a jukebox in medical school. My friend had shown me the song and we listened to it every time we were at the bar. He died a year later at a young age. I always think of him when I hear this

This is a great “songwriter’s album”, from the mid-70s. Each song is unique and really well-performed.
Chris de Burgh was the first support act (Gallagher and Lyle were also on the bill) for Supertramp on their 'Crime of the Century' tour in 1974/75. I saw him with them on that tour, in Oxford in February 1975.
He performed this song and others from the Spanish Train album entirely solo, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, and was very impressive, and helped kickstart his career. This was well before 'Lady in Red' made him really famous. During Supertramp's set, Chris, Gallagher & Lyle came on stage again as 'The Trampettes' to perform backing vocals for the close of 'Hide in Your Shell'
Everyone is all "The Lady in Red", when it comes to Chris De Burgh, and I'm over here, all like, "Don't Pay the Ferryman". (Awesome video too, used to get decent play on MtV when I was a kid...)

Lady in Red is my least favourite of his songs, partly because it was vastly overplayed. It just doesn't hold up to the rest of his catalogue.
Yes, another great Songwriter and Storyteller! One of my favorites is Patricia the Stipper!
Funny you would mention the ferry... One of his biggest hits from 7 yrs later was, "Don't Pay The Ferryman", the lyrics of which continue to say, "...until he gets you to the other side!"' ;-] Also in the 80's, there is even a sequel to "Spanish Train" called, "The Devil's Eye"! My favorite song of De Burgh's is "A Spaceman Came Travelling', also from the Spanish Train album. It proposes an alternative interpretation of a very, very popular myth.

Exactly what i thought when he mentioned Styx and Cheron lol. All of De Burgh's music is special, elements of fantasy, mythology, medieval and good old folk story telling. Most of his songs about war are also good 'Borderline', 'Say Goodbye To It All', The Last Time I cried' and Last Night.
Oh my Justin, I never heard of this artist but sure glad I just did. This song had my full attention all the way through. I agree with you that this song is not a everyday thing but sure is entertaining every once in a while. Thanks again for something new and interesting.

Listened to this album when I was a kid. Completely forgot about it until now. Good choice.
I'm a big fan of this song from Chris , he wrote and performed lots of great music high on emotion and don't pay the ferry man just two to mention from this Irish troubadour ,plus his daughter Rosanna Davison won miss world in 2003 for Ireland ( facts ) .!!!
At the beginning of the video, you mention a few names of people who suggested that song and most of them seems to be French Canadians. Chris de Burg has always been a huge star in Quebec, he toured here probably more often and was more popular than anywhere else, he even made a livestream on a local rock radio station a few months ago. I have seen him once live, it was a small venue during the Montreal Jazz Festival maybe 10 years ago. I was just a few feet away from the stage and he was alone with another acoustic guitarist.
As you mention, this album is mostly story telling, you have to listen to Patricia the striper among other great songs on this album witch is excellent from start to the end. Later, he became more "commercial" but I think that this album is his best.
PS: The story is about the train that took soldiers to go to the civil war in Spain as a prelude to WWII.

I grew up on the west coast, the first time I heard of Chris was when a new friend from Quebec played this album. It didn't receive radio play here, my stereo was another matter...not a bad song on the album.
Chris de burge is oneof the best songwriters i have ever known. Everything song has a background and story behind it. It almost impossible for me to choose any. Hiwever, one of his bests is "wall of silence". An underrated most meaningfull song and a very stonishing story...
Chris de Burgh did some really good tracks and quite proggy at times! I remember being forced to see him live a week after Genesis in 1984 and he had a light show as good as Genesis and his rock songs were superb. I really enjoyed the gig.

Chris De Burgh opened for Supertramp on their early tours in Canada and that's where they both gained ground. There's something about a show at the old Commerce High Auditorium (built separate from the school and bigger than usual) in Ottawa but the details have become fuzzy over the years. Have seen him live many times and always a great show. ALSO: Thanks for the mention.

Thanks for the Reaction: Chris de Burgh is a modern day troubadour. This album is great example. He takes imagery from everywhere. Some of his songs deal medieval themes as well as soldier stories. From this album I would recommend "Lonely Sky", "Patricia the Stripper", "A Spaceman Came Travelling" "The Tower".
He has many many epic songs such as "The Crusader" (about the medieval crusades), the trilogies "The Revolution", "Light A Fire", "Liberty" (American Revolution) from The Getaway or From "Into the Light": "The Leader", "The Vision", "What About Me" (apocalypse)
Some other musts are "Borderline", "Lady in Red", "Transmission Ends".
Chris de Burgh opened up for a few prog bands such as Supertramp in the mid-70s before headlining.
He still gives a good show and during "Lady in Red" he wanders through the crowd all the women wearing red want to give him a hug.
Mind you during "Patricia the Stripper" a few bras have been known to be thrown his way.
I love your observation about his imagery. There really is a very visual flavour to a lot of his songs, I think. He combines lyrics and voice and music in such a way you can see the song unfolding in your mind's eye in an immersive way I usually only really experience when reading a book. One of those rare masters of musical storytelling. (I think Dio is pretty good at that too in his own style.)
Chris de Burgh"The Devil Eye" is a follow up to this song, 2 albums later (he has 21 not counting the compilation ones, from 1974 to 2016!) He was known for his multi-part songs, like Revolution or Crusader, that told stories on 3-4 parts.
Like Gordon Lightfoot and Al Stewart, Chris deBurgh is a master story teller. So many songs to recommend, though you may find some of them difficult for various reasons; Crusader, Don't Pay the Ferryman, The Painter, Priscilla the Stripper, A Spaceman Came Travelling, Borderline, The Girl With April In Her Eyes.
As someone who listens to several Chris de Burgh albums a day it is very amusing to see someone hear this for the first time. I have been a fan for more than half of my life (oh wait, I'm 15...), and I could definitely recommendate some other songs out of his catalogue.
In the end it says: "The devil still cheats and wins more souls, and as for the Lord, well, he is just doing his best". And that not might say much at first, but if you really think about it, it says that in the end everyone's soul is going to the devil. Very deep meaning and definitely one of the best songs of the 70's.

Man On The Line is an underappreciated album.
Definitely, my favorite Chris de Burgh song.
I haven't heard that song in at least 20 years and was amazed that I could remember all the words. If I remember right, the only other "epic" on this album is "A Spaceman Came Travelling" which has become a bit of a Christmas standard in the UK. The other real gut-buster epic story would be the title track from the album "Crusader".

I can’t recall A Spaceman Came Traveling but do remember enjoying it way back when. I always come back to Priscilla the Stripper, Don’t Pay the Ferryman and, yes, I even like Lady in Red. He really did some of his best with David Hentschel the former Genesis producer.

Chris De Burgh is one of my musical heroes, and Spanish Train one of my fave songs of all time! I used the story as inspiration for one of my own horror fiction novels. I would definitely recommend any of his albums up to around 1989/90 for more songs as great as this 🤘
This is a spectacular album
Chris De Burgh was I found quite hard to get into at first, after a few more listens I did get it, the band certainly are serious, but at the same time have a tongue in cheek sense of humour woven into their work. Probably not for every one, but definitely worth investing some time listening to. Great review as always!
What a mix! The grand-orchestra-parts, which ingenious capture, underline and transport the dramatic mood of the lyrics with everything they can give, then the almost spoken quiet verses in between and in opposition of this the groovy, flowing rockmusic parts.
The funny thing is that there is a train between the town of Old Seville and the river on which banks the city is built. So it obviously must be a metaphoric train.

Nice song been a long Time since listenin.a freind of mine make me discover this in 85 he was a fan of Chris de burg. in that same era and range of voice and deliverin theatrical canadien singer Gowan whose now with Styx have a great song name criminal mind. Great piano man in that song and emotional voice.

Love the early C de B - saw him live in the -1980’s. My father went to school with him back in the day. I have a ton of his albums - there are a lot of story songs by Chris. I recommend them all. Best Moves is a good starter album. And I bet a lot of people recommended Patricia the Stripper - also on this album. Nice 👍🏻
Appreciate your opinions on this song. It is not for everyone agreed but the lyrics are very clever. Patricia the stripper is a great one to do next 😍. Don't pay the ferryman ( my personally fav) it's less of a story and more of an actual brilliant song.🤘
In the 90's and 00's Chris De Burgh was big in Syria, as was Boney M. I had a tough time.
Both not that bad. I mean compare it to some shit from nowadays.

If you want to discover Chris De Burgh this is the last song you should listen to. Begin with "High on Emotion" or "Donj't Pay The Ferryman". I still can't understand why you are putting off listening to Roy Harper when you are now moving onto fringe songs. Even if you don't listen to "The Game', try ""Me and My Woman", "Same Old Rock" or "When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease". You will be utterly amazed if you hear them.

Chris has a massive depth of styles, yet all have great storytelling, from two of his well Known Ballads Lady In Red, and The Girl With April In Her Eyes, all the way to rockers Don't Pay The Ferryman, and all areas in between like Crusader.
Don't skip Patricia the Stripper from this album. This album was a favourite of mine and my GF/wife, named Patricia. Chris is a great storyteller. On a par with Al Stewart and Murray Head. For a modern proggy story teller try Aaron English. Latest album from 2 years ago has a great song called Wingless Bird.

Evening, Justin. Dave from London under A Full Moon In March. I'm not a big fan of Chris, but I like this side of his music: tales of folklore, legend and adventure (Who Pays the Ferryman, A Spaceman Came Travelling etc). Reminds me of Al Stewart and to a certain extent Scott Walker (also a band - clue in the song title above). Plenty of drama and theatricality. He had a big hit in the UK with Lady In Red, a very romantic ballad which maybe typecast him too much.
It's actually Don't Pay The Ferryman (till he gets you to the other side). Wouldn't work with the Isle of Wight Ferry that I use a lot!
Funny you should mention Cheron and Styx... he has a classic track called 'Don't Pay The Ferryman' which you should definitely review! So many great songs and stories from folk to mythology... he was brought up in a castle in Ireland, also has some beautiful ballads - more famously known for the smooth love ballad 'Lady In Red' but his rock and folk songs are so underrated its criminal! Other great tracks to check out 'Don't Look Back', 'Don't Pay The Ferryman', 'Ship To Shore', 'High On Emotion', Sailing Away, 'Tender Hands', 'Borderline'. 'Last Night'.... the list goes on.

Great song! It really sets a mood... very medieval but folk song. you can picture youself by a small fishing harbour. Also 'Sailing Away' in all its dreamy qualities - just Chris De Burgh full stop lol
The strings and vocals are a nice combination. Jonathon Round's cover of the Rolling Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil" has a very similar dramatic flair to it. At first, I thought it was the same singer.

Lady in Red was later iirc. Not his best work though it was probably his biggest commercial success.

Actually, listen to don't pay the ferryman, since you mentioned that Greek mythology story about the ferry.
Justin You should also listen to "Dont pay the ferryman" also by Chris de burgh. Its about the Ferryman and the river stix which you referred to here. Its one of his most well known songs. I'd also recommend "the Traveller" which is basically one of Clint Eastwood's spegetti westerns (Hang em high I think.). I think you'd like them both.
We did say it was theatrical. Most of what I know of his is theatrical. Lady in Red, to me is just regular pop fare but there are some good recs in the comments already so I will just mention that I think you will like Patrick Watson. My favourite Patrick Watson song is "Big Bird Small Cage" but "Beijing" or "Into Giants" might be more common places to start.

Lady in red was never going to be released but got played by a few DJs on the radio for love song slots and it took off.
Everyone assumed it was about his wife, but he said it wasn't. also the song came out around the same time the story broke he had an affair with the nanny, while his wife was recovering from a horse riding accident.

Most tracks on his earliest albums are story orientated. The Tower would be my next choice.
His 70s stuff is very art-rock, avant-garde and almost progressive in many places. Great unique English sounding voice. Quite haunting and theatrical. Everything post Lady in Red is cheesy. The album it comes from is pretty good (except for LIR). His rock album The Getaway is also very good.
You should give the Live in Dublin version a listen. Worth it. Better then the studio in my opinion.

He was a great artist until the mid 80s when he became a cheesy ballad singer. Everything pre lady in red is story based and really interesting. Favourites being The Crusader and Don’t Pay the Ferryman. I love Song For You which is a song in the form of a letter from a soldier in the trenches during World War 1 to his sweetheart - heartbreaking and emotional. Keep up the good work

So much good music by Chris De Burgh, Far from these Castle Walls, Crusader, tracks like The Girl with April in her eyes. So far away from Lady in Red. If you want a laugh try Patricia the Stripper on this same album.

I saw Chris De Burgh open for Asis in he early eighties. He played acoustic and was much better than what I anticipated from his current Hit Don't pay the Ferryman. Asia were a Very good live band.
I did too, in New Jersey. I was a huge Asia fan walking in, became a huge Chris deBurgh during the concert. The shame was that he was getting boo'd.

Ps, for a more traditional Celtic sound, with a touch of Prog, try the Battlefield Band. The Dear Green Place/Mary Cassidy/I am the Common Man from their album After Hours is a good place to start.
I bet Colin Meloy is a fan of this guy. I can’t say I’m eager to hear more, though.
Crusaders is a very good story based song too. De burgh is a rather under appreciated artist who was slammed for successful overly mushy songs that became hits. If you can get past all those there are some real gems.
For a similar story but much funnier listen to 'Give the Kid a Break' by Alice Cooper, from his album "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell". I love this album, a lot of variety of styles with both comedy and pathos. It's one of my favorite concept albums, worth hearing.

Poor old CdeB has become forever associated with a cheesy love song from the 80s that never goes away and is quite atypical for him. Heis reputation had also been rather tainted by one or two things particularly an affair he had with his kids' au pair. Whatever you think of him as a person he has written some impressive stuff. Check out Who Pays the Ferryman, Patricia the Stripper, No Borderline and Say Goodbye to It All.

The Spanish Train album was great. Later music was maybe a bit commercial (or perhaps it's just that the radio liked it too much?)
I'll give my vote for next song on the album to Patricia the Stripper. (But maybe just listen to it yourself. Fun song. Some clever lyrics I think you'll enjoy).
Shame that De Burgh went from doing interesting things like this to the sappy (but hugely successful commercially) Lady In Red a decade later.

From the same album, "Patricia the Stripper" is a hilarious satire of polite Society's hypocrisy, set in England during the Jazz Age.
But his most gorgeous, lush and passionate piece is "A Spaceman Came Travelling", as others have mentioned. I hope nobody spoils the end or meaning for you. In 1975 it was highly imaginative.
"Spaceman..." would make a great sonic double-header with "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright.
Actually a more serious next-song recommendation would be *Song for You* . A letter home from the Front, during the Great War, in a style that's probably a bit more post-war. ...

I hadn’t heard of this guy either. These kinds of folk singers were interesting in the 60s, in the 70s they got a little bit bombastic and rather boring.
Not keen on this one but it would be a shame if you didn't listen to Don't Pay the Ferryman.
Don't listen to anything of his after lady in red!! Oh and you should listen to Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow you would have to review it as one though
Timing is everything classic Album
Like most people, i'd only ever heard 'lady in red', a real slow, schmaltzy number. This was certainly a departure from that. The chop, and change between singing, and narrating, can't say i'm a fan of. Musically, quite dramatic, but the tune didn't grab me either, a little over the top imho. Not for me.
You have never hear "Lady in Red"? That song got played s often stateside, I know many people who got sick of it. Hard to imagine you do not know it, as it was his biggest hit in the US charts. "Spanish Train" was protested a lot in Europe because God loses, Catholics got their skirts in a bunch about that. "Waiting for the Hurricane" gets played in Florida each year by some people I know. LOL, if you read this 2 years later, have a listen to "Patricia the Stripper" and "Crusader", or "Devil's Eye". He was good in the 70's into 80s, but after the 80s his music went down hill in my opinion.

Chris de Burgh? No.
This one - his second album - is pretty good imo.
The beginning was almost painful to me, vocals too trebley and whining, it’s just not my thing. Friends here love this stuff but it’s just a no for me. I listened and the story is typical cheating winning sucky story, if I’m wrong, so be it.
Woman in Red, is also a no.
It may be tainted by my own red dress disaster. I was kinda sorta maybe wanting to see a lass, a niece of a coworker, I was supposed to show her around while she was in town. Pretty girl. I did show her the country side in my car and we had some fun. Apparently, not enough, she went her own way. She showed up at the club in a red dress, dancing with everyone but of course, me. She did look good.
Sniff sniff. It hurt, temporarily.

Ah, if you found CdB too trebly and whiny then I will not recommend Patrick Watson. Most of his work is in falsetto. Sound weird but it works for him.
