Paper cut on your wet plate and a clay blob on your beautiful wall😂 it's great so unscripted 👍 good Q&A too, thanks!
Love your sense of humor! I'm a newbie with a new used wheel, and new kiln. I want to make my own dishes at some point, so I'm sure I'll refer back to this video often!!
Great video. I’ll echo others’ comments - would love to see the next steps for those plates... removing from the bat, trimming, etc. Thanks!!
You are my go to pottery channel when I need to figure a pot out ,thanks for your amazing talent and video's
Nice video Jon! I’m doing plates for school that’s so cool! Are you going to make video about trimming and glazing ? I think it would be a cool follow up ! Your tutorial videos are my favorite!
I just busted out laughing over your "30 years" comment, JTP. Thanks for expressing that slightly snarky sense of humor. I appreciate it (because I'm snarky, too)! ~Debz
There is a hand position to recenter a vessel on the wheel which has to be done before you cut it off the bat.
Thanks for answering my question! Cool to see my name on your video! Would love to see the whole process of throwing and carving a mug! And trimming those plates you threw. ✌️
I love doing clay plate basket, its just like playing only.
hi Jon, love your videos bro.. to help with the warping issues we deal with. in stead of throwing the plate, bowl or platter with a flat bottom.. try putting a low spot in the center and have a slight rise toward the rim.. the heating of the kiln puts a upward stress on the wares and the cooling it pulls back down.. the curve will keep the movement lower than that of a flat piece...i struggled with warping until a older potter told me that, now i rarely throw anything with a flat bottom. warped pieces filled my flower beds LOL.. keep up the great work...
Thanks for the Q & A!
If you make more JTP merch you should have a piece (shirt or whatever) with your logo and the tagline, "...all the things!"
Can you show us how you get those plates off the bat and when is the best time to do that without damaging the plate. Thanks
clay shrinks as it drys, so the plates will free themselves of the bat at a stiff leather hard stage.
Great video! I hope you post one of trimming the foot on them.
What an awesome family collaboration!!
You should do a video about throwing lids and jars
Ps love your videos
it's a pleasure to see you work. congratulations from Rome
Great video! I use an old heavy fork to lift bats off the wheel. Wooden tools seem to break for me. Keep doing what you're doing!!!
I use a paint can opener. Under $1 and very tough, works for easy removal of the bat system too.
Thanks for answering my question!!!
Hey John. Love your videos. Thank you. I see you leave the plate on the bat. When would you take it off? When its leather dry back on wheel with the wire?
Im so happy because i found this channel 😍
Aye my question is there! Love your videos
I'm just now realizing your JTP stamp signature is a mug! 🤦♀️
XD i was the opposite, i only saw it as a mug before later realizing it was the letters JTP
I didn't realize it was a mug til I just saw your comment!
You guys are so awesome. Yeah me too.
Come back to ohio ceramics. That is the closest place to me and I missed your visit. They are great people there.
Very enjoyable video Jon and some interesting questions, I have a question, have you ever been in contact with your college tutors and if so what did they have to say about your success? Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Your work is amazing!! I am so glad I found pottery again. I can’t wait to work on my wheel every day. Where did you get your stamp made.
You liked it so you bought it what a flex
So cool!
Love future JTP advance video haha
still looking forward to the final photos👀
Newbie here🙋🏻♀️ I feel pottery coming in my near future.....what are the best tools you would recommend for beginners?
Curious, what does the finished dinner plate weigh?
É show os teus trabalhos muitos lindos
When do you wire off the plate from the bat? That’s when I get into trouble making plates.
Wire it off immediately after throwing it; just keep it on the bat until it's leather-hard.
I love your plate video, but one giant step is missing!!! You are not the type to keep a secret step out of the equation, I think you just don’t realize that some of us need to know EVERYTHING☺️so my question is....when do you cut the plate off the batt? I don’t see you actually cutting off the plate from the bat .... but if you let it dry too long it is super hard to cut off or if you wait until it comes off on its own it’s too hard to trim! Which leads me to another question ... do you trim your plates? Have you ever shown that? I would love to see the process of a plate from start to finish.
Thank you for making videos so well you really have raised the bar , I’ve noticed a difference in other people’s videos since you’ve been on the scene, I really appreciate the fact that you take pride in your videos you edit them and you make them fun and interesting . I don’t feel like a captive audience ! You are both informative and interesting and fun to watch and I appreciate you and your family, congratulations on your newest addition!
Thank you again,
Jodi
wire-cut it after you've thrown it, but do not attempt to remove it until it's become leather-hard.
HELLO LOVE ALL YOU POTTERY VIDIO'S BUT WHAT TYPE OF BAT IS THAT YOU ARE USING? DO YOU LEAVE POTS ON BAT TILL LEATHER HARD? THANK YOU !
Ajr is GREAT!
do you ever throw to a gauge?
can you tell how your rack on the wall behind you is made..? Where you dry your pottery
Those questions lol.
The most annoying for me is chunks of rock, metal, wood, etc. in your clay! I threw a great mug shape this am and a ROCK was in my clay🤬
I found two screws in a 25lb block once. Glad I didn’t get hurt but there was a massive hole in the mug I threw and couldn’t save it :(
A. Sted yikes! I couldn’t save mine either. My finger caught the rock and it tore the top off🤬
Jennifer Allara the top of your finger? Ouch!
Cate7451 oh...no...lol. The top of my mug😂
Jennifer Allara , sounds less painful!
Hi Jon. I haven't thrown many plates. How do I get the rims on plates the same size so that they stack? Obviously you are experienced so you can gauge it without using a tool or whatever, but I was just wondering if you are new to throwing plates how that would be done?
Pam tenKrooden you can add a lump of clay onto your wheels work bench or drains pan sit a stick in clay toward your rim as a gauge helps get you close so their the same. once you throw a few you’ll get use to the same shape over and over
Floreypottery that makes so much sense. 😂 Thank you. I'll give that a try!
Hi Jon, i live on a well and septic system. Do you have any recomendations for me and draining my clay water. I dont think putting all that clay into my septic firld is a good idea?
I dump my water on the grass, but there are a lot of sink trap options available. Dumping clay water down the drain is a bad idea as it can settle in your pipes and clog them. The septic system is the least of your worries. As I mentioned, there are lots of sink trap options - search for "clay sink trap". At the very least, do your cleanup in a bucket of water. Let the clay settle for a day or two, then gently pour off the water.
You can build you own sink traps via buckets or plastic tubs check some out on UA-cam you don’t want any clay in your drain field it clogs stuff up
We were required to put in a separate holding tank for our studio as out septic is very temperamental , but yes a good sink trap option is the best way to go....or just dump it outside.
@@Jonthepotter thank you! Dumping out side is ok till it gets to be snow and ice of winter... Brrr
Glee Trap is the answer
Which bat are you using?
AFTER FIRST 3 HOUR CLASS IN JAN.2017 I CAME HOME AND BUILT THIS: ua-cam.com/video/UPlzMcEjXIc/v-deo.html

With 100 thousand follows don’t you think a give away of more than a single mug is warranted?
We are actually giving away 10 mugs to 10 different people. Not sure if you watched the most recent video.
To get to the plate 10:45
How are you charging $32 for one dinner plate!?
You’re right!
Large dinner plates are probably the hardest and most time consuming form due to the amount of time you need to let them dry. The space they take up in the kiln and the high percentage of breakage and loss in the process makes them one of the most expensive things I will make.
I don't do them very often because of the expense that I have to charge, but I will in special cases.
He makes it look easy...it’s not😜
Time and loss factor and you have to always make extra because many break or warp during drying or glaze mishaps If I make for plates I make an extra 4 as back up
.
Could you heart this comment for being a new subscriber?? 😁
Thank you 😊
😃
Jon I have asked you 2 times about your camera you use to make your videos. I hope you answer my question this time, I wont ask again as it seems you do not want to give out that info. Thanks
Sorry, if you look in the description of the video it is there and I answered that question in this video , it is a Canon 6d mark 2

@@Jonthepotter how many bat would one potter need?
@@bishbashbosh8178 just depends on how many you want to throw! I had 15 to start and then just added more as I wanted to throw more at a time.
I had an ex throw plates once before.....in the direction of my forehead ..
