Shame you didn't ask him if there's anything he can do beyond calling his sister. Can he call his counterparts in Gaza and help find the hostages? Just to see him smile and laugh
My guess is he saying an unverified report about the beheading of babies.
We keep hearing that Israel is a Democracy and if someone like Netanyahu or Sharon before him keeps getting elected it is only reasonable to conclude that the majority of Israelis don't want peace. No one with even pretense to peace would allow characters like the finance minister and others into a government. Israel is a nuclear power and doesn't feel obliged to follow any UN resolution, same as US, Russia, and North Korea and this is why Iran wants to be one. Why not be honest with palestinians?
For the 1st time ever Andrew Marr now outside of BBC criticized Netanyahu openly. I doubt that he just came to this conclusion about Netanyahu.
Only climate deniers and those who believe the Earth to be flat buy this so-called "diplomatic" self-censorship. Why does your podcast buy into this? You don't seem to value your credibility.
Despite Hamas' attack the polls show that the British are supportive of Palestinians and don't buy Israel's propaganda. This is not going to change because with Internet the game is up. I think even Israel knows that but they just don't care.
I used to work with a lot Israelis and most of them didn't even think of ending the conflict and didn't want it to end. This gave them the kind of paranoia that they believed to be essential to their existence. Paradoxically they are even more distrusful of Christians than Moslems.
That is quite understandable because even if they took all the land they would still be surrounded by Arabs and they have learned not to trust outsiders. That is part of their psyche and has been all throughout time ever since the Romans burned their temple and were forced out of their so-called Biblical land. It is a way of self-preservation and yet a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Anyone who has dealt with paracticing Jews and hasn't recognized this must be a moron.

He feels to me being listening to a disque repeating everytime the same noise.
To me he seems to enjoy his life/ job so much that he forgot what it means to suffer. Even not the sufferings of his own family.
His mouth is like a waterfall.
And luxury made his heart to be silent and his tongue already longing for a good lunch with the people he sits with during the interview.
To see someone speak with such passion, patience and knowledge, at perhaps the most difficult period in their entire life, in a language that isn’t their mother-tongue, is pretty awe-inspiring. Thank-you Ambassador Zomlot

I'm glad you allowed Husam to talk openly and give long thoughtful answers. Always so articulate, composed reasoned, and particularly assertive. And during the tragic loss of his family members. He's a credit to the Palestinian people, and I wish our politicians in the UK were more like him.

It is humbling how a man can remain as stoical positive, constructive and hopeful having lost a high number of close relatives a few days before in Gaza under the bombs of the Israeli army.
The manner in which he gently brushes aside the endemically racist, presumptuous and biased discourse of his patronizing hosts’ prejudices with sincerity, integrity and humility is a lesson in the art of genuine diplomacy.

After seeing the ambassador be interviewed by the BBC and have them repeatedly ask obviously combative questions at a time when his family had just died was horrible. I'm so thankful for you giving zamot a platform without the incessantly ghoulish questions. was a pleasure to watch both the Israeli and the Palestinian interviews.
He's an ambassador, so it's his job to answer difficult and combative questions, and we can here that he is very good at it. If he was just a random person off the street though, I would agree that combative questions would be unfair.

@@Rory626 I agree with you that journalists are often poorly informed and ask stupid questions, but making the interview difficult for politicians or representatives of institutions is a good thing. I've seen them do it to the Israelis too.

Maybe you should ask him to educate you on the following issues: what does the palestinan school program say about Hitler? Israel? Jews? Suicide bombings? Jihad? If he says truth (which of course will never happen) - you will understand a lot about this conflict.

This is the first interview I have seen with this gentleman on British media in which the first or second question wasn’t ‘Do you condemn Hamas?’ Kudos, gentlemen, for a fair, thoughtful, and balanced conversation about this difficult issue.
This was a very good interview that allowed the ambassador to clearly and articulately explain his government's position. However, asking a Palestinian leader if they condemn Hamas is a big deal and worthy of being asked, it's not just a cheap shot to embarass somebody. That being said, PA officials have to walk a tightrope between alienating outside players by failing to distance themselves from terrorism, and alienating elements within their own population by appearing to take Israel's side.
Anyone who wants to speak on current events should naturally want to condemn Hamas (maybe to distinguish himself from it so the outside world knows where he stands and can actually listen to the Palestinian cause or just to simply express sympathy to the victims of horrific crimes, as a form of basic courteousness). Now when there are more and more Palestinian victims it is understandable that the focus is there too.
why not ask that question? There are no demonstrations across the world against Hamas

Excellent interview! Full of compassion and trying to move the needle on the issue. Ambassador Zomlot is an influential voice for the Palestinians. He is reasonable, calm and able to answer difficult questions convincingly without trying to skirt the issue.
He does not represent the majority. He should be out of his office. Antisemitism is much more common than u think in all palestinian territories. However, why didn't u ask about the pay that this PLO grants to Hammas terrorists and their families?

In liberal democracy, elected leaders represent even those who did not vote for them. that's why it happened only once in history that a democracy declined into something else. It's good to hear both sides. But the Hamas are being defended, and equivilated to Palestinians. They're butchers (Hamas) and there's no defense to what they commited
Nonetheless, the discriminate attitudes are still there. Note the Ambassador talking about his family members who have been killed and hurt, including a child. No notable response or emotional engagement from the interviewers. Meanwhile, their podcast with Yuval Noah Harari, albeit a friend of Rory Stewart and not a politician, starts with an unapologetic personal focus with references to personal emotions and trauma. Clearly, the interviewers were afraid to engage in the Ambassador's personal story and trauma for fear of encouraging too much sympathy.
The need for a private pep talk at the end to critique the Ambassador in his absence, rather than face to face, apparently, associating him to Gerry Adams in some way and so on, also seems to reflect a fear of encouraging too much sympathy for Palestinians - perhaps, too, a fear of the strength of the overwhelming evidence of Palestinian suffering as a result of international crimes.
Years ago, in Gaza, I was asked by a couple of students ‘what did they teach you in school about the Sykes-Picot agreement?’ My reply, ‘absolutely nothing’, devastated them. I now live a few miles from Sledmere, family seat of Sir Mark Sykes of said agreement. I was with a young friend in the pub at the weekend to discuss Palestine and asked him the same question. Same answer as mine 40 years ago. We Brits are kept ignorant by the education system of our own history. A little inquisitiveness and willingness to learn from those we have tampered with, would go a long way towards our politicians discovering an international role. [I hope this is not patronising, but the Sykes-Picot agreement was the Anglo-French carve up of the post-WWI Middle East responsible for those ridiculous ruler-drawn lines which slashed through natural communities and has contributed greatly to so many regional conflicts over the past century-plus. I have the exact same conversation with Irish family and friends about the way the Troubles and Irish revolution are taught. The shock that most felt that Britain was so willing to recklessly endanger the hard won piece in Northern Ireland during Brexit was matched only by the shock at how few British people knew about the border situation at all.
Yes - Sykes/Picot agreement seems very distant in the collective consciousness of Canadians. We now live under a Liberal Govt that has built its political platform partially on the retribution paid to the society of our recent past. We ethnically cleansed our way west as we battled for control of territory/built a railroad with Chinese labor ….decimated the Buffalo 🦬 herds. What Native Americans did survive our imported epidemics, were subjugated to reservation territorial life, cut off from a established nomadic life following the herds now land locked on a”Rez-Reservation”. We run our hypocritical Liberal Govt on this awareness as we currently support Israel 🇮🇱 and ship military gear to Saudi Arabia. Couldn’t make up a more hypocritical story if I tried …. We. Are. I am currently studying this conflict for uni, I started before October 7th. To see this play out in real time while also diving into the extended history, of things like the Balfour declaration of 1917 and understanding that Palestinian resistance has been strategically criminalised by the British only to then have the British withdraw, leaving that legacy while not upholding their part of the bargain, it becomes increasing hard to sit back and watch the UK and US (and others) support Israels illegal occupation. Both sides have suffered atrocities, yet aside from the acts of Hamas, Palestine has tried over and over again to broker peace while giving up the majority of their land. To then suggest that they are in part the perpetrator of the situation in which they are essentially fighting the same invasion as Ukraine, yet no one is saying Ukraine are to blame when they fight back against Russia. The West are not willing to recognise Palestine as a country or a victim because as soon as they do they become complicit in Israel breaking international law. Standing up to Israel and saying they have broken the law they agreed to while taking land from another group of people is not antisemitic. I thought the Ambassador did a great job amid what must be an increasingly frustrating situation.

Watching Russian anti freedom, anti democracy rockets falling on Ukrainian cities and towns is like watching Hamas anti freedom, anti democracy rockets falling on Israeli cities and towns.

A great Palestinian Ambassador, a very important voice during this struggle with extremely well measured responses giving context to the political situation his people are in. I heard the interview he gave to the press yesterday, I was impressed..

I am only 15 minutes in but its wonderful to hear him speak about his country and his culture. I hope one day he can return to palestine as a citizen of a sovereign country

I would love to see him lead the Palestinian people in their sovereign state. I feel he is very educated, balanced, calm, respectful, passionate about his people, proud of his heritage and can see both sides of the conflict. Oppression is most definitely the root of the entire conflict and until that stops there wont be peace. He is an admirable man and so articulate in getting his point across given that English is his second language. I have true admiration for this man and hope to see him and his people win the freedom they so deserve.

What an incredible interview & discussion. The ambassador is an incredibly articulate & passionate individual who is a perfect representation for the Palestinian side of things. He appears to be a calm, empathetic, & rational person who is able to see & hear opposing arguments & acknowledge them from a human perspective.. It’s such a shame that Hamas have completely undone any progress that people like this man might’ve had. I feel for everybody on both sides in this horrific situation.

Finally an opportunity for Husam to speak about his deep perception of the region as oppose to constantly being hounded about Hamas. Although there are times where I believe he is either missing important information or I don't fully align, I can safely say that I now see him as a force for good in this world which was a near impossible conclusion to ascertain from his interviews on mainstream media due to the consistent hounding he experiences.

Yeah, more emphasis needs to be placed on the fact that many Palestinians can not directly condemn Hamas because of concerns that Hamas will retaliate against them/their families. Often speaking in nuance rather than generalities is the most "free" way for them to speak on the issue. What seems like a simple condemnation of violence is not as simple as those in the media make it seem. Though when this inability extends to say Western Harvard students with no personal ties to Palestine, it becomes an unwillingness to condemn, rather than in inability.
So the Gazan people didn't vote Hamas in? They didn't want them? A substantial number aren't choosing to stay to be sacrificed for the cause, have you had a look at the interviews with such people? Have you looked at the founding documents that state the aims of Hamas? What was well known when they were voted into power?
As for the point people who do want cnage can't fight back, nonsense, there's a rebellion in Iran right now, they're in a far worse situation with a government with much more power and weapons at it's disposal, yet there they are fighting back refusing to be ruled by and islamic state that harm's them, that shoots and even bombs them when they rise up.
Iranians have been out in the street saying the attack on Israelis, if Iran was involved it was not done in ther name the do not agree with their government, they do not hate Jews, and they do not want Israel wiped off the map.
Those people are brave AF, and Gazans should take note instead of blaming everyone else, they're in this mess because they took the chance of being left alone with a functioning democratic system, and they gave that power to Hamas. Hamas didn't get in by force.
If Israel has to admit its failings in this complex issue, then so do Gazans. They were given materials to build sewage systems and water systems, they gave Hamas their power and then Hamas used the materials to make weapons.
@@djon3043 Good point. Blaming Gazans for not overthrowing Hamas or speaking out is unfair. An ambassador is a different question though, since it is their job to speak on behalf of their country (or in this case, country-to-be). However, even then we must recognise that the Palestinian Authority has a population to answer to so people need to respect that indirect condemnation is the best they can do. Anybody else who refuses to condemn Hamas is just scum in my opinon.
Let's not be patronising: Balfour Declaration, Sykes Picot line, the mandate! The duplicity of the British. We started this mess! Some of us know the history.

Unfortunately, we can't change history, so there is no point in blaming anyone. The people involved at the time are all dead, and they would no doubt say they were wrong in hindsight.

We didn't start the mess. The enmity between Muslims and Jews goes back to pre-Islamic times.
The Qur'an describes the Prophet Muhammad's slaughter of the Banu Qurayza, a Jewish tribe which had become culturally, politically and economically dominant through its introduction of agriculture to Medina.
Fighters led by the spiritual leader of Islam captured the Jews, took the women as sex slaves then dug trenches in the market of Medina and beheaded 600 to 900 Jewish men.
The Qur'an says:
"God helped the faithful in the stress of war... He made you heirs of their land, their houses, and their goods and of yet another land on which you had never set foot before. Truly, God has power over all things."
Thus was a standard set: kill male Jews, take all their belongings, rape their women, God will support you.
The idea that the group God implicitly DIDN'T/ DOESN'T support might NOT need the security of having its own state, with its own defence force, police and judiciary, is grotesquely stupid.

There was a very agitated guy being interviewed, I soon realised it was the ambassador, it was the opposite of this interview and painful to watch. Morgan went on and on trying to force out of the Ambassador whether he agreed Hamas were terrorists. He did not want to answer a question like that and he became very flustered. In the Rory and Alistair interview I thought he gave the the plo relationship with Hamas very well. It just shows how mainstream interviews are so terrible now.

@@jacobkogan Terrorist is a very loaded word. It basically means that a bunch of criminals are executing the most horrific crimes under the guise of some political belief. In other words criminals end off. However, the reality is more complicated. As the Ambassador said why are Israel not "terrorists" for bombing innocent civilians. Oh but they are a country and the rules of crime change for them. But do they. Also Hamas was elected and Palestine has a certain independence so any attack by Gaza could be looked on as an act of war and not a terrorist action. Was the US going into Iraq terrorism? Was USSR in Ukraine Terrorism? What is definate is that Israel is not looking on it as a Terrorist act, they are looking on it as an act war otherwise they would not be causing genocide to the entire Gaza people. So the Ambassador had every right not to be drawn in to that loaded question.

What a balanced way to start an interview. A human interaction should always be the way to interact regardless of differences, in all debates. Always start from a place of respect, always….
And end with an outlandish post mortem backstabbing of the wise, sincere and dignified guest who has been received - with bigotry and disrespect.

The graciously condescending Stewart who makes a point of displaying the aristocratic ring on his little finger in each podcast is in fact of Jewish lineage and his bias informs all of his positions and veneer-thin postures of impartiality « reinforced » by his fellow spin doctor.
Consistently, he cuts off the ambassador mid sentence as he speaks freely, informatively and positively, in order to direct the discussion towards the political agenda and set narrative.
The hosts seem deaf, blind and stifled by their stale set of prejudices and convenient clichés, refusing to be surprised by the views and perspective of a scholarly, politically moderate man of civilization, knowledge and remarkable openness.
Of the Balfour Agreement and all that ensued, the Ambassador speaks of a certain « colonial arrogance that led us to where we are today ».

As a Muslim I wholeheartedly and in the most strongest and unequivocal terms condemn what Hamas recently did. Israel should equally be held to account for decades of committing similar atrocities against the Palestinians. Sadly, real politik in the world is such that only those wielding power and influence are able to influence the narrative, not the weak or downtrodden.

His history is also flawed as well. There had never been a Palestine or a plestinian identity for so-called centuries. The region has been in constant flux with various nations, having conquered the region and immigrants migrating to the region .

I don't know if anyone else feels this. But it feels as though both Rory and Alastair have seriously stepped up and taken ownership to give in depth interviews like this. This is one of the most respectful interviews I’ve watched in a long time.
If Germany had occupied Britain after WW1, moved Germans into most of the land and consigned British people into tiny enclaves subject to regular bombing. Well that wouldn't justify terrorism against those new German civilian occupiers, but you'd understand why someone might become radicalised into believing it was.
Or perhaps if they'd won WW2, but then instead of occupying us with German soldiers, they'd gifted Britain to Italy because it was part of the Roman empire during the Biblical era - enforcing the Italian 'right to return', so to speak...
That’s what makes Britain though, the Saxons invaded as did the Normans and the celts. That’s what humans do. They migrate and take land from each other. That’s reality, and people want to survive and defend themselves against the other.
While it maybe being more of a rhetorical one, Mr. Zomlot raised the question of how they are supposed to defend themselves and getting international recognition. The more I try to educate myself on the issue, the more hopeless it seems for the palestinians especially since Israel pretty much owns the international stage for decades.
So how is palestine supposed to move forward? The west don't seem to care much how they are being treated by Israel.

And don't make it harder for them to talk by building settlements and unnecessarily making Palestinians' lives more difficult or dangerous. Hamas are currently being taken care of militarily, so no need for dialogue there. Hezbollah are powerful in Lebanon, so they won't be destroyed, but (as we are seeing now) both sides can avoid all out war due to the mutually assured destruction dynamic. All the serious territorial disputes are with the Palestians (Syria can't do anything about theirs) so that's who Israel needs to talk to.

I used to hate Alastair Cambell. I have always found Rory Stewart to be an eccentric but down to earth and fair politician. This podcast has really shined a light on Alastair. Thjs podcast has been amazing and I feel as though this could make a change for the positive in the politics in the UK.

He’s the most reasonable Palestinian speaker I’ve seen, but his vision is not what the majority of Palestinians in Israel seem to want, hence why his faction is exiled. Gazans elected Hamas. They don’t want peace in their own separate territory- they want to replace Israel and control the whole holy land. Of course that’s impossible, and if they somehow got the land they’d still be poor and in conflict due to their ideology. But that hasn’t stopped them from wasting thousands of lives and millions of dollars in aid pursuing it. Instead of becoming independent by building infrastructure, they dug tunnels & bought weapons. The population is majority underage, impoverished and radicalized.
Israel left Gaza in 2005, so the slogan “free Gaza” is a misnomer. If it’s a prison, then the whole Middle East is acting as warden.

Approaching the 11min mark they didn't pull him up on the part about the Balfore declaration. Which I found have the interviewee the ability to misappropriate the actual history. Something you might wish to look into further.

It is some sort of dopamine listening to his presentation. He is smart when it comes to handling Western mainstream media. Though he is given limited time. he has never wasted every minute. In this interview, he is given the luxury of time to go into greater details on the crux of matters that relate to the Plastenian people.

Excellent discussion. Yes, the historical context is important - The Balfour Declaration; even the Sykes-Picot Agreement which basically determined how the Middle East was split up following WW1 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
Husam is a great person. he has had to deal with so much stupid rhetoric from Western media and politicians, but always handled it with wisdom and humility.

What an excellent interview / discussion, and the others you've done on this painful topic. You can see the hurt on all sides, but the ambassadors point about applying the international rules fairly and firmly, and the previous agreements, is a powerful one.
I have been following you guys for a while as a middle eastern scientist living in the UK. a lot to say but I only want to mention that it is very difficult to understand and have an empathy with a person whose country has been occupied in her/his or parents/grandparents lifetime and heard the stories from them. same is valid for a person whose parents/grandparents have been killed by another ethnic/political groups or the government etc. I am not a Palestinian or Israeli but have experienced both situation in my family. Both nations have lots of traumas.
As people living in the rest of the world, we should help this conflict to be solved asap. I know what you are trying to do is to help this happening.

Nice conversation. I like that they gave Zomlot so much time and patience but I still find it thought-provoking to compare the level of attention given to detailed, emotional descriptions of the events involving the Israeli concert-goers with the minimal almost distant descriptions from the hosts of the bombings affecting Palestinian hospitals, homes, and children. I believe that every life is valuable, and my empathy extends to both Israeli and Palestinian children. It's disheartening to see the stark difference in coverage, especially when considering that the number of Palestinians affected has doubled, which intensifies my concern about the prevailing apathy.
Bombs are quite impersonal and numbers aren't very moving emotionally, that's why. Then there's the shock of ordinary people on an ordinary day getting killed unexpectedly. After this happened, the Israeli response was expected, so wasn't as shocking. Then there's the desensitisation that comes from the fact that the Israeli bombs are a retaliation for Hamas' attack. While the victims are ordinary Palestinians who had nothing to do with it, human nature pushes us into an "us vs them" where we can avoid empathy because it was people on "their side" getting killed.
So useful to hear such an article and eloquent representative for the Palestinian people. Very necessary when so many people have such strident opinions.

A sensitive and rational interview and Ambassador Zomlot is a credit to his people. The question he asks about what exactly the Palestinians are supposed to do? They can't be peaceful and they can't be armed! This is the question that no one really ever answers.

While the most "rational" option would be to sign pretty much any deal they can before it's too late and things get worse, doing so would be political (and perhaps literal) suicide for a Palestinian politician, and even then, the success of it still depends on whether the relevant players on both sides are willing to stick with and implement it. Thanks to groups like Hamas and the Israeli far-right parties, this is far from guaranteed.

The situation between Israel and Palestine is very complex and has become so over so many years due to the lack of a fair and decent political solution and being properly implemented. All Jews, but especially Palestinian Jews and Mizrahi Jews who'd been dispossessed and forced into exile when the so-called Arab lands they lived in booted them out, have a perfect right to form a sovereign state as other national groups do. If there are enough believers in, for instance, legalising homosexuality, they should be allowed to coalesce as a group, form a state, and make a different set of laws than the people who believe homosexuals should be executed or imprisoned.
Palestinian and Mizrahi Jews were responding to an unbroken history of communal violence directed at them by Arabs. Their suffering was alleviated only by the intervention of the British mandate authorities, and they were due to leave in 1947.
The state of Israel was declared only hours before the British mandate ended and British troops began to depart. The Palestinian state was declared only hours later. The first act of the Jewish state wasn't to kill off the Palestinian state. But the first act of the Palestinian state was to try to kill off the Jewish state.
Palestinian Muslims have brought all this suffering on themselves by their complete refusal to allow Jews to live peacefully in their own enclave, under their own rules. In 1968 the UNSC passed resolution 242 which tried to resolve the situation by telling Israel to withdraw from the Occupied Territories and by telling all other states and peoples to recognise the legitimacy of the state of Israel and to stop threatening its people.
After the October attacks there is absolutely no way Israelis and their supporters around the world will settle for a situation in which just across the border there's a hostile, fully militarised Arab state pledged at some level to Israel's destruction and either the complete annihilation of the entire Jewish population or the "repatriation" of diaspora Jews.
It is refreshing to hear such a calm conversation over an extremely complicated and sad situation. You've achieved far more than all the shouting and finger pointing I have heard since the conflicts began. Pray for each single ordinary life involved in this atrocity, from both sides.
