    Road worn stuff is cool. People saying you have to "earn" the dings and scratches must not realize that unless you have a nitro finish, your bass will pretty much look the same for your entire life.

I’ve had the Ray 4 for a long time and have definitely not been the most delicate with it, but the finish is still completely clean, because it’s a modern bass guitar with a non nitro finish. The only thing that looks worn on it is the fretboard, but the finish and pick guard still look completely new. ive had this bass for almost a full year now. Its become my favorite bass. Every time i stand there looking at all my basses and trying to figure out which one i want to choose, I somehow always reach for this bass. And like you said, the overall aesthetic of this bass is absolutely gorgeous! Its worth every penny and in my opinion, one of the most underrated basses that fender sells. I don't even think you can get anything "road worn" for this price brand new.

    It's have one, it's really a great bass. I love vintage guitars and basses but bought this as a backup/workhorse which wouldn't be as expensive, fragile or irreplaceable as a real vintage.
    I've been blown away, tonally and feel wise it's just so good for playing in a band. It's also light and small which makes traveling for gigs/tours just that bit easier than a big full scale bass. The finish doesn't look cheesy and I like that being nitro, it will acquire further wear through use in a genuine way.

    • @karlzickrick8483
      @karlzickrick8483 Місяць тому +1

      @@BradleyHansonPhotography Fender ships the JMJ with long-scale Fender flats installed (they don't make a short or medium scale set of those strings). Not ideal in theory, but I haven't heard of issues with it from JMJ players or others who have installed them on other short-scales. The main potential problem is that the E string's full wind is wrapped around the tuner to a point which can put stress on a flatwound which is generally a more fragile string than a roundwound to begin with, not to mention that it also screws up the string alignment behind the nutslightly which can cause the string to bind a bit in the nut while tuning. With the tension of a long-scale bass this fat wrap around the tuner could well cause the winding to break or loosen, but with the softer tension of a short-scale bass you can often get away with using long-scale strings like this.

      @karlzickrick8483 Місяць тому

      @@BradleyHansonPhotography Fender strings are also made by D’addario, but I have found the Fender flats to be distinct sounding from the Chromes in my own experience though they do have a similar feel. Chromes to me sound brighter and somewhat midrange-scooped then mellow into a rounder tone with age, while Fender flats are tamer up top when new but with a more midrange-forward and even potentially “crunchy” (with the tone control turned up) tone that seems to stay pretty consistently as they age. I’ve only ever compared them on a long-scale bass though, the Mustang tends to scoop out the mids naturally so the difference may be more subtle on a Mustang. I definitely prefer the Fenders to the Chromes on long-scale basses, and like the Fenders on short-scales I’ve tried them on enough to stick with em (though I have Labellas on my Mustang these days for their signature “thump”)

    I really wish they'd do a not road worn version. I'm not taken by either of the colours and I'm not keen on false ageing. It's strange that Fender hasn't woken up to the idea that this is their best Mustang and making it available in more versions might just increase sales.

    Completely different story than the Squier, huh? I think it worths the upgrade, it's triple the price, I know, but I think the quality is more than 3x greater. You get what you pay here, plus, the relic'ing from the factory is on point. I have a Sandberg California hardcore relic'ed and I must say, the Fender relic'ing is a better job, and the Sandberg cost me $2,900 due to the relic...
    I bought this bass. But one thing: I had ground issues (noise when not touching the strings), after shielding it, I was able to get rid of the noise, and for some reason the pickups are sounding better, it seems they had a tonal range upgrade after shielding!!!

    Fender is using full-scale strings on this Mustang [Look at the headstock.] The metal wrapping is going around the tuner. That's a big no-no with flatwounds, or so I've been told... Could it be THEY have been lying to us all along?

    • @estebanb7166

      @mannishboy1 2 роки тому

      @@estebanb7166 I understand what you're saying, but most flatwound string manufacturers will tell you, "don't let the windings go around the tuner post."
      I've heard people having luck with winding the wrap on post if you go slow and take your time.
      I'm guessing JMJ is using long scale strings on his Mustang basses. Whatever works for you, but still very confusing!

    I understand the people who dislike road worn instruments. . . that they want to earn the scratches. Totally get it. But in real world use, wouldn't it take decades for a guitar to get to that stage? If you like the way they feel and play as well as how they look, why not start enjoying them now?
