I guess I'll stick to my simple bicycle with no patented construction built with proprietary parts for $$$ and tolerating fair weather use only.

As we learned in the 90s. Simple systems are often the best. Overengineered gimmicks always leave the market soon.

Dude, I learn so much from but you got to read the manual: future shock cartridge can slip with all that grease, the preload and locking screws can come loose if u don’t use a spanner to hold the preload screw.

Not that I dislike Specialized but it's exactly for reasons like that they didn't had my money for decades. Last one I got was a 2008 big hit ...

I had the same problem with my Diverge. I wanted to replace the bearing and ordered a replacement. But before it arrived, the seatstay cracked. Luckily, it was still under warranty and specialized replaced the complete 14 months old bike.

Yeah its a bit if a routine to do the future shock i know as i have a diverge. Ive eliminated the 1.5 shock and replaced with a solid adaptor now to save weight and expensive parts

Shouldn't a large top seal, plenty of grease on that prevent that?

I love the FS system on my Sirrus but I didn’t realize about the water ingress with no egress. Yikes I better open mine up it might be sitting in a pool of water. Is there a way to service the FS cartridge? That is expensive to replace

I asked my lbs about any potential problems with the system. Of course, they said it's such a simple design and there won't be any problems.

With all the grease the steering headset will collect all the dust and dirt in no time and then the acumulated dirt will start destroing the paint finish. I think the FutureShock really is a bad (and overpriced) design. My alu Diverge has no FutureShock and after your video I decided to upgrade not to the higher up Diverge but to simply install a Redshift suspension stem. 🤔

I know what you mean but in my experience the dirt will just stick to the outside layer of the grease and won't penetrate to the bearings. I have my headsets packed with grease on my mountain bike and gravel bike and once a year I check the headset and the grease is still in good condition.

I have a diverge pro 2019 model, I commute two hours a day, in one of the wettest areas on earth, the Seattle area. I never see rust on my bearings. I have replaced my Lower bearing only once since 2019.

  • @neilk22

Its really not that bad to keep serviced, if you actually keep up. If you leave it too long (like with anything) it will be a problem.
There is no denying the utility in the FSR.

Blowing out the top after washes and/or wet rides with the compressor has saved my upper bearing. The lower was not so lucky, but I was able to clean and repack it to get by .

I have the Roubaix, Creo and Creo 2 with this system and with later bikes they did ship with a small spanner to adjust and hold the square barb that drops down, makes the adjustment much more simple. I also found Hambini do the bearings which have better grease and are cheaper than the ones Specialized sell. So far, they have lasted much longer that the Specialized ones.

Yeah, first water draining into bottom bracket, now into the steerer bearing too. Not to mention that full ICR need a different box format for cheap chipping. Thanks to all these sexy invention 1x on road/gravel included.

I believe Future Shock 3.0 which can be retrofitted solves this problem (better & more seals). I have 2.0 and with regular proper cleaning, servicing and preload settings water never gets in. Lastly this is a common thing with bikes especially if there are internally routed cables and openings for water escape: Check the dirt/sand and moisture inside: the bottom of your bike, cable openings, etc.

@@DilbertMuc. this is not just a future shock problem. Water and dirt ingress is problem with all bike frames. Check your chain stays or bottom brackets area.

@@MokaBoucha Yes, you are right. However I found that some headsets with fully integrated bearings are kind of water proof because they have a good sealing lipp on top. Others like classic headsets start to rust after a few months, and the old Tange headsets were completely open. My XT BSA bottom bracket remained fully functional for 25 years and still works absolutely smooth, however the bearing balls developed play due to abrasion over 10.000km.
