    First day of working on the Project Ferrari F430 and I take on one of the most common problems with Ferraris in hot climates - the dreaded sticky buttons. I remove and clean up all of the buttons that are sticky, and some of them I coat with plasti-dip to help give them a fresh new look and so they retain a soft touch feeling.

      Hey Dan, that's a nifty idea. Prompted by your video I dug into the subject (which I suppose you have done as well). Appears there are two types of buttons and panels with icons, and the ones with that get the black coating _may_ need laser etching. I didn't find any maker or refurbisher who's willing to divulge his trade secrets, but I stumbled upon aviation enthusiasts who build their own flight simulators that have black surface instrument panels with back-lit illuminated white icons, numbers, etc. Very detail-oriented perfectionists. They've run into the same issues of laser etching painted plastic. In this comment thread they're discussing laser settings and the number of paint layers to apply to create their instrument panels. talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/laser-etching-painted-plastic/7029/55 . This may prove useful to you in the future.
      Best wishes on your endeavours.

    Dan, I actually experienced “sticky buttons” on my Jaguar XK. Amazingly, a simply solution is to rub the parts down with hand/ Body lotion. I used Burt’s Bees Body Lotion. I have heard on my Jaguar forum that other hand lotions work equally as well. Coat the part with the lotion, use your fingernails or a toothbrush to scrap the sticky stuff and wipe with a micro fiber cloth as you show. A toothpick is useful in the cracks and crevices. Alcohol can remove the white printed symbols on the buttons so I would not recommend using it. The best part to my solution is that you do not have to remove or recover the parts/buttons. The lotion can easily be removed with the micro fiber towel. Try it...you will be amazed. I did this three years ago and they have remained sticky free.

    It's even worse on light-colored interiors. When I first got my car it took me a couple of weeks to figure out why all these black streaks were getting on my door handles, etc. until I realized it was the goopy soft touch from the switches coming off on my hands and getting everywhere. Luckily, like this 430, most of my stuff had been done, but a few switches still needed a cleaning.

  • @gagamba9198
    @gagamba9198 4 роки тому

    Nice job, Dan. Have you considered doing the other pieces that are not sticky now but will be so eventually? Could be a small yet still significant selling point when people learn the costs involved. "All 'soft touch' interior pieces corrected by refinishing them to remove sticky rubberised covering." What would a Ferrari service centre or third party charge to refinish all of them? StickyRX quoted a 2002 Maranello 575M owner $1970 to refinish 5 vent rings, the centre console, 7 console switches, 1 gas lid release button, and 1 trunk release button. The quote from the StickyNoMore website for the same parts was $1010. To buy third-party made replacement parts for the 430 is about £3600.

    Plastic paint would hold up better, and look better than plasti-dip. I've done both. Dupli-color vinyl and fabric paint. Takes a while to dry before you can touch. I did a nice job with my Mustang's door inserts... then left a fingerprint where I could always see it. :-( Once it cured though it could handle the daily use rubs. I'd say a day and then be careful assembling.

    Wear a mask when you spray, your lungs will thank you. Give as much time as possibly to the parts you sprayed allowing them to cure and firm up - the longer the better. If you handle the parts before cured you do so at your peril as the part coating is very fragile until cured and is easily damaged by a wayward screwdriver, or by the pressure of your hand if pushing too hard. I think you realized you don't need to loosen the dash to remove the air vents, which are very difficult to properly reassemble back in. correctly. Do not play with the directional air switch at all costs. If you do move the directional air vent piece it will have you eventually just giving up and putting the vents back in without dealing with the directional switch. Take my word for it don't touch it. The vents are reinstalled with the air flow arrows closest to the windshield on the top, there's also a cut out slot it will fit in to when properly aligned. A good firm tap will pop them in but be careful you don't break the carbon fiber. Yes I do this for a living.
