Beastie Boys Explain Why They're Different Than Brett Kavanaugh (HBO)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лис 2018
- When the Beastie Boys burst onto the scene in 1986, the three nasally white-boy rappers from New York City had only recently abandoned a sputtering career in punk rock. But when founding-member Adam Yauch died in 2012, the Beastie Boys were finished. Now, almost a decade after their last record, they decided it was time to tell their story, with The Beastie Boys Book.
Their debut hip-hop album, “License to Ill,” went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide, celebrated by drunken frat boys convinced their partying rights were being infringed. And they played to stereotype.
But the Beastie Boys would change with the times-and apologize for the past-while becoming one of the most successful rap groups of all time.
Their new book hopes to answer all questions of growing up and ownership of past mistakes - including those of Brett Kavanaugh and Russell Simmons.

RIP Adam Yauch, much respect to Beastie Boys!
Much respect to the Beastie Boys. In 1986 I didn't care these dude were white, I just felt that they made dope hip hop and they didn't try to be something they weren't.
ok boomer
Fddlstxx Ok millennial
@@imawildman ok gen xer?
@@Fddlstxx What the hell are you even doing here? Aren't you supposed to be commenting under a *Lana Del Rey* or *BTS* vid? 😜
Not trying to be something they were not was one key to their success. Example: Vanilla Ice was basically run out of the game because he was perceived to be fake or acting hard when he wasn't, not acting himself and what we call "culture appropriation" these days.
The BB's were themselves; punk, rap, brooklyn street boys who came up at the right time and were getting away with sampling and also riding the gray areas between rock, rap and punk. Mass appeal. Not just some white guys were trying to make a buck rapping.
I like how Vice said it would be the Daily Beast claiming cultural appropriation on the Beastie Boys, not Vice.
😂 so true!! Pot calling the kettle black!!
Paul's boutique...one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.
"I'm like Sam the Butcher bringing Alice the meat!" - 2nd greatest rap lyric of all time, right behind 50's "I love you like a fat kid loves cake."
Best album ever made , just my opinion,!
They're catchy but they are nowhere near the best rap lyrics of all time lol
I wish Yauch was here to speak on this. To me, he represented the fullest example of maturing, from the young tough guy macho sexist persona, to a wise hip-hop guru who rejected division and discrimination, and aimed to spread peace wherever he was. RIP MCA
I would have assumed these dudes were different than Brett Kavenaugh. Did anyone think they were akin to Kavenaugh?
Yea I didn't see the point. I guess it was just topical at the time.
@@pod9363 I think they're admitting to being exactly like Brett Kavenaugh when they were young, but being vastly different now because they have taken accountability for their actions in the past.
Beastie Boys were such a positive influence on me. I was 10 when License To Ill came out and I was obsessed with them, and as grew into my teens I was falling into that “frat boy” bullshit routine that they were known so well for. But, when Check Your Head came out, it was then that my whole life took a complete 180•. Everything they did was the epitome of cool, so as they grew and changed, I looked up to them so much, I did too. They showed me what true artistic integrity is, and that you don’t have waver to the lowest common denominator to be successful. I’ll always be indebted to them for everything they did for me, they made me a better person. There’s one word that sums up perfectly how I feel towards them...”it’s called gratitude...and that’s right!”. R.I.P. Yauch(mca)
Amen on the artistic integrity. "I might stick around, or i might be a fad, but i won't sell my songs for no tv ad". So many "artists" take their first(and every chance after) to sell their art / image for quick cash.
LOVE THIS!
Thank you, Vice. Now we just need an explanation from Eminem on how he's different to a microwave.
Omelas Homelas MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

@@brunavalentim1995 A microwave? No you wern't.
I get it considering both their time as a punk group and liscence to ill were supposed to be tounge in cheek jokes but gained alot of support. It could be argued that the beastie boys were comedians whose joke kinda changed their lives
Edit:for reference the beastie boys started by band members of "the young aborigines" swapping instrument, later their hip hop breakthrough "cookie puss" happens because the original is a prank phone call over a beat, they would rap over it when playing live. When talking about license to ill the drummer Kate Schellnbech who was the drummer until that album said that she loved the album and that is was funny but the crowds they drew at the time weren't in on the joke
Love the Beastie Boys! Really think they were ahead of their time music wise and I think it's amazing that they can look back on their past and be like "Hey, we were wrong!" Not many artists or celebrities do that sort of thing.
nor should they
What’s not to like , honest dudes saying how they see it
R.I.P Adam
Hopefully these guys can make a comeback album even after losing MCA like how A Tribe Called Quest made an album after losing Phife and it was actually good.
I miss my old friend Yauch so intensely even now.
Sorry, but I just saw this interview - four months late or whatever.
He was the kind of kid you know is going somewhere, long before there is an objective reason to think so. I am glad he had the opportunity to do so much living so early - we never know when our bodies will change everything for us.
Thanks to Adam and Michael for their stories and their continuing creativity.
Nailed it.
Sabotage is classic it's one of those best tracks of all time.
Yep, I saw BB live just after sabotage was released, so awesome live 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

One of the best videos, too!
I think thats probably fair to say.
Been a fan of these guys some 30-odd years... They talk about ACCOUNTABILITY, and how it seems that the teaching of responsibility and accountability is in decline, and it is incumbent upon us to remedy this "atrophy of civility," now!
I miss MCA so damn much... I am very happy that Mike and Adam are both still very active with the band as well as their chosen personal projects.
Time to go kick it, ROOT DOWN!
Do you think Vice did them a diservice with the title of the video?
@@chimeraelite
No. The thought never crossed my mind.
Tyler Kemp I don't have attention span to read your post. But you sound smart.
@Daniel Callahan
Mmhmm... Sure... If you say so...
(WTF??)
Tyler Kemp Yeah they know a thing or two about accountability, like how they completely ignored the allegations made against Russel Simmons.
These guys are so relevant today. They made a huge impact on the music industry and rap. They are rap but not the rap that was then or now but their own. My oldest boy knows the Beastie Boys music. I would say that those that like good music go and search it out and listen to it if it is now, 10 years ago, 20 years ago or 30 years ago. Music that has made an impact stays around.
At the very end when Mike says, "that's about right." I literally cried thinking about Adam Yauch, how they loved him so much. True friendship.
"it was kinda joke at first wasnt it?"
Because god forbid a person like two or more genres of music

Loved the book guys!! Hope you find a way to do a new project
We miss you MCA! Rest in peace 💖
Grieving like I have in the past, therapists have told me, whenever someone brings up an individual or individuals I've lost, I either change the subject real quick, or I kinda make light of it in a joking manner, I can tell by listening to them when Adam Yauch was mentioned, they made light of it... You can tell Yauch's passing still effects them
The Beastie Boys, Metallica, and The Police are all artists I absolutely HAVE TO hear at least daily! I CANNOT go one single day without hearing something from either of them! They make my life complete! Thanks, Beastie Boys! LOVE YOU! R.I.P. MCA!
Well, before the toxicity of the inevitable Excuse Brigade arrives for the relevant subjects addressed by this iconic group...these guys are National Treasures. Influenced so many genres, spoke their mind decades ago, built something solid and lasting from nothing, and for-real social awareness, walking it like they talk it. Kudos, gentlemen.
The only thing Beastie Boys and Brett Kavanaugh have in common is that they're white. The title of this video is like saying "Barack Obama and Michael Jackson are different people". It's stupid.

Jeez the years fly by, remember when they were fresh faced youngsters, from Beastie Boys to Great Grandads in a blink of an eye.
That seems to happen when people aren't in the spotlight every day. When you see them once every 5 to 10 years you can really see the time.
Mike voice still like teenagers
"We need to have that dialogue" YES. Amazing stand on the politically-correct-police!
Horse shit. Beastie Boys are still alive and well with most who respects great music. They were not just hip hop punk. These guys were my generations Beatles. Amazing band, amazing music. Their a musical genius, and they will be around a very long time.
I have to say one thing. They are very humble about their influence, but trust me, kids these days do know who they are and they do listen to their music.
I appreciate every interview with these guys that I can watch/listen to.
Never thought I'd see the Beastie Boys apologizing for fighting for the right to party.
Love the Beastie Boy's
Love these guys and I will always love them, my teenage years thank you !
I dont understand what this has to do with brett kavanaugh.
They talked about him specifically. Maybe watch the video again?
Beastie boys did some really dumb, teenager shit. The difference is they actually owned up to their mistakes and didn’t shirk accountability. Brett deflected and did some of the worst melodramatic acting. In our society, one would expect the reverse behavior from those two entities. We all do dumb stuff, but not owning up to it only makes it worse.
@@djstarsign well said.
It's just Vice using their platform to reaffirm that in a "woke" society, you are still guilty after proven innocent.
Yet Vice still hasn't addressed all the question/holes brought up about Ford after the investigation. Or the complete lack of questions/holes in the investigation of Kavanaugh.
@@ghidfe is that honestly what you got out of this video? Your comment is covered in agendas. This video isn't about innocent or guilty, it's just an example of a group of people growing from one position to another. How is that a bad thing? We need to be having those discussions. Your comment has more to do with how upset you were with Vice before you even pressed play. I wish more people would ask themselves whether they want to be a solution or just another symptom.
All 3 Beastie's, they were all so humble, they honestly told everyone they didn't think they were a big deal, they said it and you believed them

Still one of the top 5 greatest hip hop rap groups ever! Their music constantly evolved and broke new grounds.
sorry to all you haters and nay sayers but this group encompassed youth and what it was like growing up in the 70's, 80's and 90's. whether you can relate to that or not too bad. bottom line is whether u pray, are gay or repent or keep fighting to party THIS GROUP OF GUYS ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT PAVED THE WAY FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND BROKE THE STEREOTYPE OF RAP just like any other racial divide tried to create. So you can hate all you want they are just 3 guys whose music defined their youth and made $$$ doing it. As far as allegations and treatment of women in the music industry and across the country ITS ALWAYS BEEN GOING ON...what women had to do to get a record deal vs a man varied by 2 things T&A and many younger women in the industry are able to jump start their careers with social media that women who have come before them may have been given the only option to f*ck a music exect to get a deal and with a dream and promise of making it big these women had to make a choice. we can all judge anyone its our right but dont take it so far left its can never be RIGHT!!! OK.....✌

3 Nasally Rappers? try One or two i guess w Mike D, MCA was def not a Nasal rapper, actually he always had an Older Gruffer type voice. The real Nasal rappers are B real, AdRock, and Q tip. thats a style yo. just a little fyi

So happy I got to see them live, so good.
I know Vice has devolved into a groupthink sewer, but that title: Haha. Could there be a truly subversive element working at Vice who snuck that title in? Nah, was probably meant without a drop of irony or awareness. One can dream though, one can dream.
The most important part of this conversation is that, like many people, are saying it's ok to judge or decide a persons guilt without knowing the truth . Not even one factual piece of information is needed to decide if someone is guilty. They laugh like it's okay or that they know the truth like god
Theyre my favorite band ever. Grew up with them, Love them so much.
Can someone timelink where the title matches the content of the video, because I somehow missed that part
first half of the video mentions it repeatedly
Once again, vice proves it is not real journalism, and it’s writers do not deserve human rights
What a waste of an amazing opportunity. I feel Vice has created this arc of the beastie boys. I thought they where a cleaver band poking fun at frat boys and used subversion and their talent to create some great songs. I feel the interviewer missed the point in the introduction - happy he mentioned on some lesser known stuff but nothing special. For Vice a huge let down
There is no cultural appropriation in hip hop. Not in any kind of art. For the love of God.
Now I chill real ill when I start to chill. When I fill my pockets with a knot of dollar bills. Sippin' pints of ale out the window sill. When I get my fill, I'm chilly chill.
I didn't grow up with them and their music isn't really my cup of tea - but wow, based on this interview alone, I can certainly respect the hell out of them as human beings. Great answers to great questions.
I wish I'd seen them live more than once . RIP MCA.

Hello from Dharamshala Tibetan in exile home place. Sadly the place has turned into a sterile Disneyland to the point that you hardly find a Tibetan flag for sale as some 'Free Tibet' related object that would get the crass mass tourism getting sensibilized to the cause. Got into a talk yesterday with the youth leader of the national Democratic Party for Tibet, where I had mentioned what represents the Tibetan cause for people of my generation, HH the Dalai Lama to the wonderful and compassionate Tibetans and largely Buddhist around the world. Then it appears your name as a band, MCA as a music media leader that got to enlighten the youth with the Tibetan issue. The kid was hardly turning into his late 20's.
I had founded quite reassuring that the younger Tibetan generations still remember your name as a great musical and political influences so far.
So I just wanted to thank you for the influence, the cultural heritage and the inspiration. Very best regards.

Much love and respect to the Beastie Boys. Now! I need that Mike D sweater!
It comes out in 10, yet Yauch would know to announce that 9 years on I'm the project to tease to the press that's it coming out in one year, so it would be good though.
Why do people look down upon the licensed to ill years? It was teens making rebellious teen music. Thank god we have Vice to shake there fingers and nanny us and tell us what is bad! What would we do with out them!?
I'm sorry, but if you play their music to kids these days, they will love it! Timeless. They are too modest.

“Listen all ya’ all this is Kavanough!” 🎶
its amazing how all that partying over the years has made these boys age progressively.
I have to disagree about kids now not caring about what rappers were around 30 years ago. First rap my son listened to was Beasties after he heard them in my car. Next thing a new he knew most of their albums from listening to them on his own. Paul’s Boutique is his favorite. He listens to new rappers I hate now, but we can always agree on listening to Beasties, Digital Underground, Led Zeppelin, Herbalizer, and Clutch.
It's true to an extent unfortunately, i wouldn't say nobody cares about the Beastie Boys anymore, people with good taste that know about them jam them. But a lot of younger people just care about new stuff.
I sensed a little fake modesty with the answer to that question. They definitely have a place in hip hop/music history. Lots of kids have a superficial taste in music but grow more open as they mature. If that wasn't the case, nobody would care about a book written by some forgotten group from the 80s.
You mean "different from." Than is a qualifier, as in "more different than similar."
As a lifelong fan, I’m never sure I buy the whole “we were acting a stereotype” thing. I suspect it’s retro-fitting a narrative. I mean, they were kids, and like most at that age, they did some stupid/outrageous/regrettable shit in the name of fun, and then they grew up. Own it and move on, but don’t try to pretend you were acting the part of someone else and it wasn’t really you. Licenced to Ill was (and mostly still is) a fun album.
The book goes into detail to explain it was both. They started touring songs from LTI a year or so before it's release with run dmc, ll cool j, whodini, etc. Then when LTI broke they did two more back to back world tours, the second one with Run DMC again. Three years of doing a short set of what little songs you have at that point night after night. So it was fun to live it up at first, but then it became boring and they really were trying to perform a stereotype they created night after night with their manager breathing down their neck, and that got tiring. It's why they left Def Jam.
White Boy Mike, Third Bass, Vanilla Ice, Snow, Eminem, Mac Miller, Action Bronson... We need to expand Mike D.'s crate collection!
God they're such amazing dudes. I love their philosophy. Respectful and loving to all! All about growth and shit!

Bruh they didn't appropriate shit they appropriation is taking cultural aspects and using them to seem like something ur not they used their own shit, had their own style, no black rappers were doing the shit they did, and that's why they were great they embraced their punk roots and whiteness and what do ya know ask any rap fan any race they will say beastie boys kept it real over anything and regardless of what was trendy
