    Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing. I did lighting back in the 80s when it was all par cans and gels. Thinking about getting back into it and this was really helpful.

    One more time nice work. Your board setup is how I use to teach . It's fast and easy to make looks on the go . 99% of the time in my live show that is how I ran my shows . Keep up the great videos. Also to the newbes out there learn the music and use it for all your looks.

    I've been performing live for over 41 years. In all those years at all different venues we've performed at, from tiny to huge, indoor to outdoor, hired sound/lighting to BYO, I've never played on a stage where fog or haze was used. Never. But nearly all of your videos show lighting through fog.
    Many gigging bands in my region carry no lights. They simply rely on whatever the venue has. And the venues that do have lighting simply have a few lights, always on, pointed at the stage.
    We've always carried our own lighting and were content with simple color and dimming control.
    But now I have a new three piece band that is quite busy and I'm working on improving our show lighting but have no interest in fog, haze, lazers, derbies, or moving lights. Although I am considering a static gobo for custom cut backdrop scenes.
    I need to keep our gear reasonably compact and our setup/teardown time as minimal as possible. So my approach to improving our lighting is quite simple.
    I intend to use existing led wash lights to light the three of us, of course, but also to wash the back wall in multiple locations, which I can contol via DMX, to create movement and mood through simple scenes and chases.
    Since I'm looking for every method I can use, I want to diffuse the lights for maximum effect. But I've not found any aftermarket add-ons and have no wish to purchase a whole new system just to accomplish that.
    Do you have any tips, hacks, or DIY approaches I might use that won't affect the light's ability to cool?
    Thanks for your time and consideration.

    Hi, I was wondering what your thoughts are on how to get started in LD field in general (with goal of doing EDM type stuff)? I know there are courses, etc, or perhaps getting a job with a gear rental place, or maybe purchasing some lighting gear and starting a small lighting company? Like, if you had that as your goal but none of your current knowledge about all the gear and software, what would be your first steps in moving towards that?

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  4 роки тому +3

      I would do these (2):
      "perhaps getting a job with a gear rental place, or maybe purchasing some lighting gear and starting a small lighting company?"
      Doing both at the same time gives you both ends of the education - how the big shows work, and the time on the console doing smaller shows to build your style/programming skills.

    How about I have a problem with my Akai APC40, it stays stuck, my daughter was moving it and this is the result, the green button flashes and the red stays on when you press the green, the red turns off and the green continues flashing, when you press The green turns off again and the pan button turns on and stays in the right direction. If the Ableton program recognizes it and on Mac and PC, that's how it is in different programs, it does the same thing, it recognizes it but it doesn't do anything, it's like blocked or something like that. I hope I can count on your help.

    I'm an in house LD. My question is how does a new LD that comes into a club and integrate house lights to their show? Addressing, using odd fixtures?

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  4 роки тому

      Great question! What they typically do is copy the venues patch into a new universe on their console, and then "clone" or "morph" the venues fixtures to copy programming from fixtures that they have in their show. This gives them a really big jumpstart on programming.

  • @brikstik3442

    Hi david great channel really enjoying all your content. I'm interested on how you have the kia controller and the other console both setup. Still fairly new to lighting, usually do my programming within computer software. However I'm leaning towards physical consoles for more live control. I love the setup you have and I'm interested how you get both these controlers to work together the way they do in this video.

    Do you need to know exactly how many (and what kind) lights are available before you begin pre-programming a synchronized light:music show? To clarify, I would like to program lights with backing tracks, however how do I know that the light programming I have done (or will do) is going to work for every venue?

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  2 роки тому

      You can program the rig in a way where it can be scaled down, but in most cases it will be difficult to expand the rig after syncing it to music unless your console has cloning capabilities

    Is it possible to make a living out of being a lighting programmer? If so what college classes would I even take.

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  5 років тому +8

      Hey Sebastian - not only is it possible, a lot of people do it! There are 2 primary ways people get into the industry - either they go to a college and get a theatre/concert/event planning degree and then start working in the "real world", or they simply begin working for lighting and stage labor companies at the entry level.
      I personally started like the 2nd way - working for whatever lighting or AV companies I could. When you show initiative and work hard, it will be noticed. Then, you can ask nicely, and many companies will let you come into their shop and work with consoles on your own time....and this can help lead you to get on shows.
      When I started, I also found that connecting with Lighting Designers and programmers and asking them what the best steps would be helped me a ton! Find some local people in your area, and take them out for coffee! If you show initiative, they'll likely help you :)

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  6 років тому +1

      Hi Adam,
      You'll want to create an "Override" fader that only contains the information for "FX speed" for each parameter or each light that you want to control the speed of.
      I don't have any free videos on how to do this, but I do cover it step-by-step it inside of Learn Stage Lighting Labs: lp.learnstagelighting.com/learn-stage-lighting-labs/
      Then. you'll want to clear out any FX you have already built that include speed information...and any new FX, you will NOT record a speed on your FX (just make sure the FX speed fader is up when you program :) )
      Thanks!
      -David

    What Equipment would you go for, as a 5 members Rock Band, playing mostly in Small/Medium sized Bars/Clubs ?
    Maybe a video on this could be cool, and there are nothing as such on youtube at the moment.
    I've watch many of you videos, I like them, but they only apply on "big scenes" like this one. But not enough on Small Venues where most of the bands actually are, and have to do their own lighting show.
    I think you'd help many people out there that don't know where to start, what fixtures would you advice them to get, where to place their fixtures, on what should they place them. What to get for Front, for Back lighting their Bands, Etc, Etc.
    But Thanks anyway ! your vids are really instructive. Keep it up !

    HI! I have a big question. How do bands in festivals sync their lighting? I mean i know how to sync with MIDI and my backing tracks BUT every lighting machine and stuff have their own codes and colors depending on that code. So if im using my own lights, and then go to a show where they have too, theres a big possibility that the colors and movement could change due to each machine MIDI code. So, how do ALL bands sync their lighting show without suffering those kinds of problems? Because sometimes it is impossible to bring your own equipment just to avoid that problem. Thank you!

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  5 років тому +2

      Bands either don't do it with tech, the operator does it OR they use a very powerful feature of professional consoles called "Cloning", which copies programming from your lights (which may or may not be set up) to their lights. More on cloning here: ua-cam.com/video/Qiwml4WOtjg/v-deo.html
