This worked on VMWare Workstation 15 Pro with a Win10 Host and Guest. The config utility was here "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmnetcfg.exe", and I had to click "Change Settings" to see VMnet0. I wasted many hours trying to make this work. THANK YOU!
Worked great for me! THANKS! When I saw that I didn't have a VMPlayer folder, I just did a search and found the vmnetcfg.exe under "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation". The VMWare Knowledge Base had nothing as simple as this for a solution. Kudos!
Instead of using the command prompt, you can access the network settings by navigating to C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation and then double click vmnetcg on a windows PC and then follow the network customization that you outlined. Thanks for your help!
Thank You! I am setting up a VMware vSphere lab in Workstation with Autolab and I couldn't figure out why Bridged networking wasn't working. My Virtual FREESCO router wasn't getting a DHCPOFFER. It kept saying "Waiting for DHCPOFFER on eth0.... failed/delayed" This was the only information I could find that worked. Hopefully google indexes this comment to help someone else in the future with the exact same issue.
I wasted a lot of time with corporate IT on this, convinced it was McAfee Endpoint Protection that was screwing with my VMware Workstation networking. This video was precisely the fix I needed! vmnetcfg.exe might be available directly now from VMware or their Support rather than this extraction method, but your method is solid as well. Thanks!
Even tho I'm a guy who is pretty much at a decent level at hacking and cyber security, however, simple stuff can hold back a whole system! I have tried everything DNS, firewalls, IPs, router etc. I gave up almost, until I saw this! I must say, wow!!!! Thank you so much.
Thanks a lot for explaining it clearly how we can actually connect the virtual machines to physical network. It took us 4 hrs just to fix this simple issue. Thank you very much
Thank you so much for making this video. You have no idea how much time and effort you saved me. My VM's were all working fine when all of the sudden out of the blue none of them would get a connection from the router in bridged mode. I followed your instructions and I am back in business again.
Thank you!!! Very helpful even after more than 5 years since the posting. After using VMWare Player since several years without issues this issue occurred a few month ago. Even when I chose the adapter in the bridged setting "Replicate physical .." "Configure Adapters" it did not work. I could not find the exe in VMWare Player 12 but found it as a download file on the internet. Thanks to you and Tobias Hartmann!!!
My issue was that I also had virtualbox installed, which created another virtual connection, which VMware was using as its first choice in "automatic settings". I unchecked the virtualbox adaptor as an available option in the "Automatic Settings" config (button you see in the video next to the bridged to selection dropdown. This still allows vmware to choose my wireless or wired connection as appropriate. Thanks to this video for helping me find this.
I know this is based on older versions. With the newer version 6 of player they no longer include vmnetcfg. What I had to do is download the trial version of vmware workstation. (This uninstalls the vmplayer at the same time.) Copy the files from the installation directory and store safe. Reinstall vmware player which uninstalls the workstation version, and then copy the files back. Lot of mucking around but it works.
God bless you a 1000 times. I spent over 20 hours on this...arggh, something so simple and VMware couldn't provide this info on their support site. many thanks again!
This helped thanks. To everyone that is still struggling, i found out that after you do this, you might also need to change your own lan ip from inside the vm, since sometimes it won't do it automatically.
To anyone reading this: I read online that you cannot use the /e switch to extract since (iirc) vmware player 12. I ended up downloading the tool from some website. other than that I followed the video and it works for me! thanks
I just wanted to make sure I wrote you something to give you props. My VMs were working and then stopped all of a sudden one day and I wasn't sure why. I think mine had to do with adding virtual box and then ir'a interface confusing VMWare Player, never the less. This video was perfect, and you are a saint for sharing. Thank you so much!!
Dude, thank you so much for putting this video out there. I too spent about 4 hours trying to resolve before stumbling across the solution in the nooks and crannies online. I only wished I would have checked UA-cam first. It would have saved me so much time.
hi instructor and to the users. This tutorial is too good I really got impressed. Also for the users who are following this video I want to make an addition note at this step when you go to command prompt to extract vmnetcfg.exe. You may not see the vmnet.cfg directly under extract folder.you will find network.cab - extract it in explorer or 7zip, then find vmnetcfg.exe and copy to c:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player
Fantastic! You saved me so much time! I am using VMWare 15 on Windows 10. I found the vmnetcfg.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation. I ran that file and was able to configure my network card and my bridged connection for VM Ubuntu worked.
OMG You saved my time. Thank you so much for clear tutorial. On my VMware the selection of which network to bridge to was in the main VMware Player. Under "Bridged" is a button "Configure Adapters". So vmnetcfg.exe was not needed. Wow. Thanks again.
THANK YOU. If you have vmwareplayer 6 though, I had to do the following: 1) Download vmware worktation 10 2) Extract it via VMware-workstation-full-10.0.1-1379776.exe /e vm10 Using winrar, extract two files out of core.cab + vmnetcfg.exe + _vmnetcfglib.dll Rename _vmnetcfglib.dll to vmnetcfglib.dll + Copy both files to c:\program files\vmware\vmware player\ run 'vmnetcfg.exe' then follow the video instructions
Thanks a lot! ...After all this years, it's still working, at least for version 12.5 (my case). The differences: 1. I was not able to extract from the executable installer - had to find on internet and download vmnetcfg.exe 2. Still wasn't able to see VMNet0, so I did a "Restore Default" - after that VMNet0 is there and everything is working again. Thank you very much!
@tony757575 The thing with bridged networkingis that it treats your laptop and your VM as two separate machines and DHCP will allocate 2 separate ip addresses. I have never had a 3G card but it is possible that it only allocates you one ip address. You may have to used NAT networking
well no wonder I couldn't fix it from within the guest OS. thank you! I guess the headache is what I get for not learning how vmware's bridged networking works first. in case anyone's wondering, this video is still relevant for workstation 12
Thank you i can say it was a great clue. I've installed VMPlayer 10 and referring to your instructions i extracted but there was no vmnetcfg.exe in it. So as a workaround i downloaded VMworkstation and extracted it. From there i copied the following files to VMplayer folder: vmnetcfg.exe vmnetcfglib.dll, which worked, hope it helps others too... Cheers
This works with vmware workstation 14. the vmnetcfg.exe is in the vmware workstation folder is already installed and need be run as admin. Win 10 / Workstation 14 Thank you for the heads up and time saving. Cheers, Thommi
Same exact situation for VMWare workstation 12.0. Used the same method in the video to fix the issue. Started working immediately after selecting the physical NIC and clicking apply.
Thank you very much sir!!! I am really really thankful to you for this!! Searching for hours online but couldn't find anything..you really save me here
Thank You so much for this. Im using vmware 11 now and do not have to run vm network config but the part about how to get bridged to work and select the nic myself helped me more than you know
@tony757575 My guess is that it should be able to work with almost any type of internet connection. For bridged networking just assign VMnet0 to your desired internet connection
your video is very old yet this info was useful. Note, if your using the new vmware workstation the file will already be located here "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation"
THANK YOU ! For me it was the windows 10 creators update that caused the issue, but i would not have solved it if it were not for you pointing me towards the vmnetcfg.exe .
Very good solution, and I've been through few of them already. Personally, my problem was as you said - my virtual machine picked up wrong network connection. I used Raeltek instead of Intel adapter. I checked on my host machine which one is used for a wi-fi connection and set up the network adapter. Thank you very much :) Btw. You have awesome voice.
select the bridged connection and then choose which nic it should connect on. Make sure your nics are enabled. and then on your VM client re-enable networking and it should start working.
Thank You! You saved me a lot of time. This works also with similar problems on VMWare Server when the bridged networking was working few years and then stoped.
Great !! the issue occurs because of Wireshark installation . Wireshark creates on more NIC for capture so maybe it cause problem with VMware . The Application solved this issue! Thanks, Man !
Great job and great video. I am using Windows 10 and Win 10 gives me me grief with virtualization and I was using Workstation 14 and it works for that as well. The same application referenced in your video is in VMWorkstation folder but I configured it the same you you suggested. Great job!!!
Thanks for the Video, it confirmed my suspicion that something was broken in the VM settings and not on the guest machine configuration. However, since I use VMWare player 6.0.1 I discovered too late that the vmnetcfg.exe extracted from the version 4 cab did not work with it. Instead, I went to the "Virtual Machine Settings" dialog, clicked the "Configure Adapters" button under the "Bridged" radio button and selected just one adapter from the list (that has all adapters checked by default) after doing that I got my connection back. BTW, this could be why they don't distribute the file in V6 anymore.
Make sure you are extracting to a folder that you have access to... also, Once you have extracted the installer, the vmnetcfg.exe file is now located in one of the *.cab files. Try unzipping (rightclick > extract all) the network.cab file and you should find it!
Easy way in Windows 10: Goto --> Windows Start icon --> All Apps --> VMWare sub folder --> Virtual Network editor ---> select VMnet0 (Bridged) above and below click on radio button. If you cannot find the VMnet0 option above run this as Admin to see VMnet0 option.
I'm in a similar situation with VMware-player-15.0.4-12990004.exe. It looks like the program is ignoring the extract and /e arguments unlike what the video demonstrated 2011.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I also had virtual box installed, it was bridging it to the virtual box network adapter by default which of course had just as little internet as the rest of them.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!! man you are great....thought i could not extract the contents of the exe but I used the virtual network editor from the Edit options in Workstation.....thanks dude
Holly Shit!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had this issue since a LONG time ago! and I never searched on youtube. First try and you game me the master solution. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
For those who update to Windows 10 and are having issues, simply open the Virtual Network Editor on your machine and click the Restore Defaults button. Fixed all issues for me
Thanks so much for this! Saved me a ton of time. BTW if it helps anybody, vmnetcfg.exe does appear in the version I'm using VMware Workstation (not Player) 12.5.2 at C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation
Thanks a ton man. Your video really gave me the idea. Mine was VMPlayer 6 so had no cfg file as shown here. But yes got it right by bridging the correct adapter in the selection menu in the setting option.
Although I could not find the config file referenced in this video, there is still a way to force your VM to use the mystical VMnet0 adapter in VMware Workstation 12: VM Settings -> Network Adapter -> select "Custom: Specific virtual network" -> select VMnet0 from drop-down menu. **Verified on Windows 10 host with Linux guest** This fix seems to have all the same effects one would expect from selecting the bridged adapter setting. +Isaac Sears I tried all the fixes but still doesn't work on VMWare Pro :( Running windows 10 host with Ubuntu 16.04 guest. Ubuntu get's the ip address directly from router but internet connection is not working :( :(
Hi Dan, your the best, was able to get VMplayer 6 to pick the particular NIC via Virtual Machine settings and selecting only the required NIC. Thanks and more grease 2 ur elbows!!
thanks !! its finally working initally the bridged to option was greyed out in vmnetcfg.exe , restoring it to defaults, and shutting down the vm made it available.
Once you have extracted the installer, the vmnetcfg.exe file is now located in one of the *.cab files. Try unzipping (rightclick > extract all) the network.cab file and you should find it!
oh god this works. I managed to find a similar solution but in other order of steps ( i didn't open vmnetcfg.exe from there ). But when i reinstalled the windows, i was almost sure this will happen again. Thank you, dude !!
I think you need to download the vmware installer file and then you will extract the files from it. I chose to save the VMware installer file to my C:\ drive because it is simple and easy to reach from the command line and extract.
Thank you so much! After moving my VM to a different host I got this exact same problem. The VM reported that it was connected while still unreachable.
11 years have passed and you sir are still helping people like me! Thank you for this well explained fix!
THANK YOU!
Spent 2 days looking for a solution, finally someone told me to check if I connect to the right NIC and I found your video. Thank you so much!
As old as this video is It's still very very relevant. It has taken me from 1pm to 10pm to find this solution. Thanks a bunch.
Kudos!

yes this worked for me.. had to assign the ip address in the vmware manually and it did the work.. thanks mate....

4,5 years and 2 hours of googling later: Thank you!
12 years later and this is still applicable... vmware really should do something about this!
Also, you may want to think about installing the new VMware Player 5. It has the ability to target specific nics built into the program's VM settings
Thank you for this video even after 9 years it's still useful.

Can I buy you a beer?

Wow thank you so much
Make sure you are extracting to a folder that you have access to... also, Once you have extracted the installer, the vmnetcfg.exe file is now located in one of the *.cab files. Try unzipping (rightclick > extract all) the network.cab file and you should find it!
So the lazy way to make it work that I used was just disable the other nics so it wouldn't get confused. THANK YOU A LOT.
Easy way in Windows 10:
Goto --> Windows Start icon --> All Apps --> VMWare sub folder --> Virtual Network editor ---> select VMnet0 (Bridged) above and below click on radio button. If you cannot find the VMnet0 option above run this as Admin to see VMnet0 option.

what to do?

Excellent work on this documentation danscourses! I just needed to get bridge to work on my vmware, but that you showed it for vplayer was excellent.
It's a very nice tutorial, i have been searching for a long time but we haven't found the solution. but i got the solution now.
I can't Believe That i Switch over and over between Virtual Box and Vmware And Now :) After a Long time My problem is solved
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I also had virtual box installed, it was bridging it to the virtual box network adapter by default which of course had just as little internet as the rest of them.

You have to thank this guy. You just cant ignore. THANKS
Your work paid off off and saved me a lot of time I found 6 other video's that sucked you rock
I´m was having this problem and thanks to you now i can connect my vms to the network. Thank you very much.
12 years later, this still helpful
Although I could not find the config file referenced in this video, there is still a way to force your VM to use the mystical VMnet0 adapter in VMware Workstation 12:
VM Settings -> Network Adapter -> select "Custom: Specific virtual network" -> select VMnet0 from drop-down menu.
**Verified on Windows 10 host with Linux guest**
This fix seems to have all the same effects one would expect from selecting the bridged adapter setting. Thanks to OP for pointing out that VMnet0 adapter is used for bridged connections.
+Isaac Sears I tried all the fixes but still doesn't work on VMWare Pro :( Running windows 10 host with Ubuntu 16.04 guest. Ubuntu get's the ip address directly from router but internet connection is not working :( :(
+Isaac Sears Nvm got it to work had to turn off firewall on host machine lol! Thank you :)
Thank you! This fixed the same issue for me on VMWare Workstation 15.
thanks a lot! In my case - just disabled "VirtualBox host-only adapter" in "automatic bridging" adapter list and it worked..
i wish i could french kiss you right now , you just saved my life
thank you sir
The new version of the VMware player may already have that file (i think it is cal vmnetcfg.exe) in the program folder did you check?
Thank you for this video!! This is the problem that has had me stuck for a couple of days. Good job! ke them coming.
Dude, thank you. My teacher was pissing me off and saying that my computer just sucks because he could not fixed this haha!
Hi Dan, your the best, was able to get VMplayer 6 to pick the particular NIC via Virtual Machine settings and selecting only the required NIC.
Thanks and more grease 2 ur elbows!!
thanks !! its finally working
initally the bridged to option was greyed out in vmnetcfg.exe , restoring it to defaults, and shutting down the vm made it available.

I didn't find when I extract VMware 6

Very helpful, I'd got close but hadn't quite got this to work!
maaan... you are too awesome.i had struggled with this for the longest time
Very useful video!.
I wish I came across your video a lot sooner. would have saved me a lot of hassle and time.
Thank you Danscourses! tried to fix this for hours and found your guide and were done in 10 minutes! :D works to 110%!
Thank you, you save me I was struggling with the setup of the wireless network on vmware and found your video. It worked Thank you so much
Saved my bacon man! Still valid for VM workstation 15 (except the file is already there... no extra steps needed).
Extremely helpful. I was about to just set my workstation on fire and walk away.
Thanks dude, you reminded me that and it actually worked!
In vmware workstation, you can find it in Edit -> Virtual network editor
Once you have extracted the installer, the vmnetcfg.exe file is now located in one of the *.cab files. Try unzipping (rightclick > extract all) the network.cab file and you should find it!
oh god this works.
I managed to find a similar solution but in other order of steps ( i didn't open vmnetcfg.exe from there ). But when i reinstalled the windows, i was almost sure this will happen again. Thank you, dude !!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I spent 3 hours trying to figure out how to get it to work.
Joanna Quintero we spent 10 hrs ! lol
i spent 5min to fix it xd
I think you need to download the vmware installer file and then you will extract the files from it. I chose to save the VMware installer file to my C:\ drive because it is simple and easy to reach from the command line and extract.
OMG i tried for HOURS!!!! and after 4 hours i just saw your video and done it in just 5 minutes >.< NICE VIDEO!!
You're My Hero!!! Issue still exists with Workstation 14 Pro!
Bro thank you, this was excellent, for linux users (probably not all) is /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-netcfg
I am not sure you need it in the latest version of the vmware player. I think they built it into the interface.
Excellent video! You saved me so much time and I learned a lot more about VMware.
danscourses: the hero we need. I migrated a major VMWorkstation server and ran into this problem. The utility is also available in VMWare Workstation.
Thank you so much! After moving my VM to a different host I got this exact same problem. The VM reported that it was connected while still unreachable.
