I love that he set those boundaries while filming what’s love for to do with it to protect his and Angela’s mental state but also use it as a tool to pull the audience in. Specifically the scene where Tina and the background singers are having a pool party and he drags her in the house and beats her, we don’t see it but we have to use our imagination. When I watch the scene I feel like one of the singers outside by the pool watching/hearing what’s happening and feeling absolutely helpless. That’s great acting/directing on his part!

I was 8 years old when that movie came out and lemme tell you, I didn’t know how impactful those abuse scenes were on my little eyes and brain. There’s a reason for parental advisories. He was mentally ill. That's what it is. He was an abuser. But, I like that Laurence was transparent about his own emotional landscape. Because, he played the character brilliant. I'm glad he cared enough to tell the crew members and Director. What he didn't want. In respect to IKE and Tina. Regardless of how we may feel. The man help to cultivate her as a talent. We know of her because of the man. So I give him that, plus his indelible contribution to the creative arts. Rocket 88 is considered the first Rock and Roll single. I can totally understand why he turned down Pulp Fiction. There's a portion in that film that made me utterly cringe. And I believe that's one of the reasons why he turned it down. However, I don't see anybody else playing Ike in What's Love Got to Do With It. Nobody else would have worked in my opinion. Overall he's a legend and deserves his flowers!

I'm not sure if he was being considerate of Angela as such but I think it was mostly to protect himself from being triggered. As an ex-abuser the intense scenes would have taken him all the way back to his old ways and that can be difficult to relive especially after having transformed from that kind of person.

Laurence is one of my favorite actors. Especially for his work with Angela, who is one of my favorite actresses. I haven't watched "What's Love..." in a couple of years...like really watched it intently, not just have it on in passing or while I'm doing something else. I saw the scene, and it hit me in a way I couldn't shake. Yes, I've seen those abuse scenes from this movie multiple times in my life (as I'm 35 as of a few days ago), but that scene didn't hit me like it did tonight ,130 in the a.m. in my apartment on a Spring break Friday (between classes). The scene is supposed to be tough to watch, but with my growth, I hadn't seen it the way I saw it tonight.
I paused my copy of the movie and I had to trace down something where Laurence talks about playing Ike. I wouldn't have figured he was abusive with his 1st wife. But having to go into that space, I know he had to decompress somehow as a Black man who at least tries to be a good example for Black men/actors. (I looked for a while on UA-cam, didn't find much from Angela's point of view about the abuse scenes, just general clips of her talking about playing Tina.)
As for the accountability and flaws I have to consider with myself...I'm not sure I'll be able to afford the same level of extensive mental care or therapy as Laurence, but I know I struggle with anger issues myself. A single Kendrick "Big Steppers" album helps bring awareness (and a lot more of us needed to hear it rather than trashing it in favor of whatever angry gun-bar filled album insert mumble rapper here put out), but I know that's not enough to help me continue making myself a better man.
Ultimately, I'm glad Laurence shared this, and I wanna thank you for sharing it with us. Now I gotta finish watching the movie.

It was an eye opener and I asked my mom at the time to explain why someone would hurt someone they love like that.
Needless to say this live changed my life in a way and helped me know what to look out for in an abusive relationship.

I knew three men, earlier on in life, with very similar personalities to the Ike Turner Laurence Fishburne brought to the screen. Beaten. Broken men. They knew the position they were in - that was it. This would be it for the rest of their lives. They would NEVER rise any further. And it ate them up. The only power they had, was confined to the four walls of the house they lived in. And woe to all the occupants because they were in for a hellish experience. Laurence took me back to those days. He was a reproduction of those men and it stirred the same buried but familiar, cold-blooded, nauseated feeling I would get in their presence. Laurence had the gravitas to tap into that evil and project it through the screen. I thought he was exceptional.
