  • In this video I share my complete process for sealing, mounting, and varnishing my colored pencil paintings. I share why I choose to present several of my pieces without glass, what products I use to keep my pieces safe from environmental and light damage, and some safety tips for working with toxic fixatives.
    This is an approach that I adopted from Ester Roi. You can read her process on her blog here:

    One suggestion I would make is to substitute taping the paper to acid free foam board instead of cardboard. I didn't realize until a few years ago that if paper even touches something like cardboard it can become vulnerable to yellowing in those areas. If you're going to use cardboard maybe put a sheet of glassine over it and tape it to that.

    I've been using colored pencils for years, but just ordered sanded paper and powder blender for the first time. I'd love to take your course to learn how to use them properly. I'm excited to try powder blender because brunishing hurts my hand/wrist, and I like to avoid solvents in the winter when I can't open the window. Also interested in improving my drawing skills and values.

    I do have a question, I looked up the golden company and they no longer carry the varnish you recommended at the end, but I did see they have another water based polymer varnish called waterborne varnish that also has UVLs in it. Would that work as well?

    Awesome video. Thanks! In your opinion do you think the UV protection of the varnish can offset the risk of using a less light-fast color pencil? I'm sure it depends but curious if you have an opinion.

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  Рік тому

      Hey! Glad you like the video. I am honestly not sure. I use the Uv protection to replace glass… and I typically use “Uv protective glass” and lightfast pencils. The protective glass/varnish are considered “museum “ conditions for lightfast ratings… so if you have a really low lightfast rating I feel that you are going to notice deterioration of color/saturation… I have never tested this though… it’s just speculation :)

    I honestly have never created any art with colored pencils since I left school. All I have now are 3 sample pencils from Derwent. Not sure if curiosity is a good enough reasons to join your giveaway 😅

      Curiosity is totally welcome, but I do want to make sure you would have access to all the supplies you need. Have you checked out the supply list and would you be able to purchase the necessary supplies? (If you only have 3 pencils there will be quite a bit to acquire)

      @@LanaGloschatArt I would love to get some colored pencils but I have no clue which to choose - so many jargons 😅 I’ve also been told not to get a set but that makes it even harder. I have only been doing watercolor painting and want to incorporate color pencils into my watercolor journey and urban sketching. Any chance you already have a video on this topic? 😄

      @@butacrafts I don’t have a video specifically on urban sketching, but I have several review videos including on that is all about how to pick out the best pencils for sanded paper. I would recommend buying a set vs individual pencils because it’s a better value per pencil. Watch a couple videos to learn more about the pencils and to figure out which would work best for you and reach out with any questions
